The same in Germany, sushi is sushi and mochi is mochi (of course we have a non-english name for rice cakes. Its Reis Cracker, the litteral translation Reis Kuchen would be an actual cake made from rice-based-flour). But I think a lot of the older japanese dictionaries translate mochi as rice cake since mochi wasn't really a thing back then.
Mochi have been called rice cakes in English for a long time, but over the last 10-15 years or so as JP culture (read: anime) has gained more traction in the west it's slowly been phasing out in favor of mochi since, yes, we already have a different product called rice cakes lol

I've gotta say that it's not only hilariously funny watching these girls do this but also absolutely fascinating when you see how they think form their ideas of what the different phrases mean. For example, I had no idea where "crieded" came from as a native English speaker but when Mio said that she thought the meaning was something about "sad crabs" then it made total sense to me. Also, the fact that Korone got "united" out of that which completely changed the meaning the sentence while also getting it back to something that actually made sense was quite awesome to see.
