From 9:45 - Edith is played by Gladys Egan. Pretty amazing acting from a 9-year-old kid over a century ago. You can tell she was probably staring at D. W. Griffith off-camera and he was talking her through the scene, but she still sells it. Too bad the film business tossed Egan aside before she was 16 and she ended up working as a secretary for 40 years. She was the last surviving cast member of this film when she died in 1985.
Florence Lawrence was so pretty. To be the very first named actress must be awesome. I am glad some of these priceless movies survived and restored. They lived such a simple life back then. Can you imagine?
Just visited her grave at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Very cool name and person. Tragic ending that I feel very close to being an actor or here in this grizzly industry.
Did you notice the ants crawling on her tombstone? The ants are always there since she committed suicide with ant poison. My friend pointed this out to me this while looking at her tombstone.
This is my favorite pre-WWI film! It is the earliest film I've seen that had real emotional impact for me. Earlier films are interesting, but do not have the emotional depth that this one did for me.
The legend Florence Lawrence with the Oscar's legend Mary Pickford 💚💚, wow! I wish they had a talkie movie together... But only Mary went on to make some lead roles, Florence never had a chance to lead in a talkie only hired as uncredited extra...
More than promotion, is because back in those days, production companies used to do a shameless copy of others stories. The logo assured you they were original Biograph.
10 years later and Florence Lawrence could not get an acting job to save her own life. She had a couple lines in a talkie much later. She did sign a contract to play bit parts along with other actors of her time. Offered a bit part after being the first movie star. How insulting!

Silent films are really interesting because it makes you observe.

Call me soft but I think that’s very nice. Nice that she’s not forgotten.

This is awesome. I didn't know that any of Florence's films survived. And this print looks good, good clean up!

Priceless!!

Wow, a Biograph film that has survived? I didn't think any have, nor many Vitagraphs, except for a few John Bunny films. This is awesome!!
Hundreds of Biograph's have survived. Do your research!
First movie actor to be billed by name, hence "first movie star"
Thanks so much for posting this gem!
Amazing so many lost yet so many of hers available
Thank you for posting this. Love Flo
Very good but sad movie.
The doctor was a very handsome actor 😍💕
Really really enjoyed this very well done and the story was so well telegraphed. So sad
A sad story,real Biograph entertainment !

It’s crazy how most people in this film are probably dead now. RIP.
Probably? It was 112 years ago. They’ve all been dead for decades.
NOOOOOooooooOoo not little Edith!
Very sad end
😥😥😥😥😥😥😥😥
You don't have to be beautiful or handsome to be a movie star...Just be yourself and try your best. It takes time to get famous
I'm agree
WOW
What's the narrative justification for having an American Biograph (AB) logo hanging on the wall of the patient's home?
Back in those days, production companies used to copy stories one from another. The logo assured you they were original Biograph.
One thing about Florence: she was NOT a raving beauty; she must have had what it took to be the very FIRST movie star ever.
Kirk Barkley looks pretty beautiful to me outside of today's fucked up beauty standards! But I do know what you mean.
Every interior scene has the AB logo of the film company displayed somewhere. Shameless promotion is not new!
