How Guns Are Advertised In The U.S.

- Most of the gun debate tends to focus on firearm production, distribution and consumerism as avenues for intervention. However, on Wednesday July 27th, the Committee on Oversight and Reform, will hold a hearing with the CEOs of gun manufacturers Daniel Defense, LLC, Smith & Wesson Brands, Inc., and Sturm, Ruger & Company, Inc. on their role in gun violence, specifically looking at the sales and marketing of their assault rifles.
There is currently no federal regulation on how guns are advertised, but many advocates for stricter firearm laws believe limiting the marketing of assault weapons could translate to fewer gun-related deaths.

How Guns Are Advertised In The U.S.
The best marketing tool by far is from politicians promising to restrict or ban them.
I don't know... Electing a person of color to the Whitehouse seems to be the best tool, to me, even if restrictions or bans are never mentioned. Obama was probably the best thing to happen to gun and ammo sales in a long time. While Trump's victory cooled the fear, and sales went down. Although things like, Constitutional Carry, will help keep sales steady, I would say, darker skin in political authority produces the biggest concerns, and thus the biggest surges. However, it would be interesting to see what anomalies, like Hershel Walker, would do to gun sales.
@@gregoryt1139 that's just proving the fact that there many racist people in the USA?
@@kv4648 I would say it proves there are many people who fear race, separate from the wing-nuts who just wish for civil war so they can go around murdering people. I can't remember which Right-Wing pundit said this, but the comment was something like: "The shrinking current majority has treated minorities so badly, for so long, that if minorities were to ever gain authority and power, brutal retaliation has to be the most logical response." Everything the GOP has done is designed to stave off what they believe is an inevitable "slave revolt." With the gun manufacturers arming both sides, while raking in the cash.
@@gregoryt1139 the ones who experienced the brunt of it have long passed away
@@kv4648 Seriously?! That's like saying Civil Rights was only an issue for the sixties, and its effects have no bearing on people today. On the contrary, it's all a continuation of the same story.
To me, the biggest advertisement for guns is crime, riots, and violent protests where the general public can clearly see that law enforcement is not designed to prevent violence against you but to respond after the fact.
It’s quite impossible to prevent most crimes, since police can’t be everywhere
Because it is a firearm and has been historically advertised to people who feel vulnerable to crime notably the trope of the single woman with a handgun in her glovebox to protect herself
The idea is that no criminal with even the most basic capability for foresight is going to attack you because they know that, while police might not prevent the crime, they can probably find the imprison the person responsible afterwards. At least for any really high-profile crime like murder - a bit of common theft isn't such a priority.
@@jtgd so since we can't prevent crime everyone should see gun ads and buy a gun got it. There is no problem so we shouldn't do anything
So we should fund the police more for not protecting us?
Hollywood is by far the best marketing tool to date.

nope, other countries don't have a problem with guns.
I don't recall there being gun advertisements on TV, radio, billboards or postal ads.
The news media is the most influential driver that encourages gun ownership. Shootings are good for ratings and the bottom line.
Here in Tampa, gun shows are advertised on billboards.
@@Blaze6432 Texas too
Maybe that's why were are getting these shootings. The media gives them too much attention.
they're just trying to pander to your 18 year old neo socialist kids. We dont have ads like that.
There was only one time I ever saw guns advertised on the tv and it was for an ammo store during the pandemic and it was a story only in the city of Albuquerque.
"How Guns Are Advertised In The U.S." By Democrats talking about banning guns every once in a while?
I find it farfetched that anyone viewing an advertisement or promotional video for a firearm would come to feel it would be great fun to shoot a bunch of people. Certainly there are those that should be stopped from accessing weapons but these few sick individuals have already developed a long list of grievances and lack the maturity/self control not to act on them. Like it or not these companies are only selling products legal to own in this country. I agree no advertising targeting kids but aside from that they should be able to promote their products.
You guys don't seem to understand the relationship between gun ownership and murder rate. In Europe we do, look at the stats...
@@damsh6408 in europe y’all have madly violent countries too bombings and stabbings goin on all the time and most of those countries haven’t even seen a drop in gun violence since bans were imposed anyways
@@dariodicarlo8745 Ok, O was talking about western Europe. Just look at the murder rate by firearm per county. It's not even comparable as it's so low in western Europe compare to the US.

@@damsh6408 yea what about Western Europe y’all act like ur doin good or sum when ppl still get stabbed left and right and terrorist attacks are also all too common there as well and regardless the gun homicide rates in those countries didn’t change much since gun control was implemented in certain countries like the UK the gun violence hasn’t even changed much since they implemented those laws they’ve had 8 mass shootings in the 1980s and 1990s and after the 1996 ban on handguns and further guns restrictions there have still been 7 mass shootings since so these past couple decades with England having gun control it didn’t stop shooters really at all countries like Italy are realizing that and in Italy gun laws are becoming in favor of civilian ownership of firearms
@@dariodicarlo8745 Ok you don't like statistics but buzzing news. So what can I tell you. Just keep your weapons and keep killing each others.

I see the whole Remington settlement is continuing to be misused by people who don't realize the nuances of that case.
First off Remington did not settle anything because Remington is currently at defunct company. The insurance agency that represented Remington settled, they settled because they found it financially cheaper to subtle instead of fighting a lawsuit for a company that no longer exists (in fact one would question how you could properly represent a company that doesn't exist).
Second the plaintiffs had to shop for the proper Court to even find somebody who would take their lawsuit seriously.
Third in the lawsuit they highlight ads that related gun ownership to manhood, they called it toxic masculinity.
However the facts of the case don't back their theory.
The Sandy Hook shooter never saw these ads and decided to go purchase a firearm.
Sandy Hook shooter killed his mother and stole her firearms.
The in the lawsuit they never even try to prove the shooter saw these ads and it ignores the fact that if these ads contributed to the purchase of the weapons it was the mother who sold the ads and was influenced.
It's all really ironic because a lot of the people who are anti-gun seem to correlate with the people who say 'oh we need to remove money from politics the special interests have too much influence.'
But this lawsuit was funded by special interest groups, meaning that a lot of people are hypocrites.
Couldn't have said it better myself. I do hope that gun companies will stop running ads like that bushmaster one though. I'm staunchly pro 2A and find them to be pure cringe that do nothing but feed into anti-gun stereotypes.

@@0IIIIII good for them…not here in the USA… I would hate to live in one of these other countries where you can’t even defend yourself without being charged for something
Keep in mind that for most of the 20th century schools in the US not only had shooting clubs as part of school sports, but many schools had firearms training as part of the curriculum. But alas they disappeared, and along with it went societies respect for proper safety, maintenance, and usage of a firearm. School shootings are a relatively new phenomenon that never really happened back then.
I am not American so excuse my mistakes. From my observation, most people in America who want to ban guns also happen to be some of the most anti-police people too. And they also spout things like Trump is a fascist. I don't agree or disagree with any of that.
But if police isn't working properly, why do you also want to ban one mean of defense against criminals, why do you want guns banned if you think fascism is on the rise?
You get it
the first thing a true fascist will do is to grab your gun making you unable to defend yourself.
There are a lot of emotionally immature people who don’t question things, don’t educate themselves and only respond with knee jerk reactions.
This is nonsense comment.
I don't live in America and thank god we don't even know how to use a gun.
Do you think it's a problem for us?
You feel less safe without guns?
Hell no.
Police is supposed to protect people, and every person still have the right to protect himself.
Protecting yourself doesn't mean that you have the right to buy guns at 14 because you are scared for your life.
And btw Trump isn't the issue anymore, so it's useless in this conversation. He IS still a fascist though, racist too.
Now I have to go to get a gun from a candyshop and protect my family from mexicans behind the walls that I'm building.

Let's just gloss over the whole period where guns were actively advertised, regular gun ownership was considered normal, and gun owners were taught how to properly own and fire guns and the lack of mass shootings...
you mean rural america? lol. urban mass shootings were rare cuz urban guns were rare. rural mass shootings continue to be rare but theres low population density anyway
That was also the period of time when the NRA was all about promoting safe and responsible gun ownership, and did practically ZERO political lobbying. That changed in the late 70s when the NRA was literally taken over by weirdo gun nuts. Now because of the NRA, even the most basic research into guns is heavily discouraged and even illegal. So now we’re stuck in a situation where objective data would help solve the issue, but we’re not allowed to seek out that information, so we just yell at each other and nothing gets done.
@@drakes4625 "rural mas shootings" with urban mass shootings, all of them have a motive. What's the motive of shooting up a small town in the middle of no where? @@drakes4625 Rural vs Urban has a lot to do with mass shootings. Its not the rarity of guns though, its the style of life lived and the values people hold and put out into the world.
Teaching this stuff to your kids will make them responsible when they grow up. There should be a course in schools to teach kids to be safe and responsible with firearms
This is hilarious. The media and all social media has effectively shut down any sort of advertisement for firearms, but now you're blaming influencers? Here's a newsflash, people who are already interested in firearms seek the info out. People don't suddenly buy a gun because they randomly saw an advertisement. Get real.
It's also illogical when you consider that social media and influencers are targeted marketing. On social media you see ads for guns because your activity has demonstrated that you want to buy a gun, likewise the reason you follow a gun influencer is due to your pre-conceived interest in guns.
I would argue that the overwhelming majority of people who consume gun advertisements are people who already own guns. This is the same moral outrage that led to the typical hearings where we had the censor music because of the children, or that time when we had to take dungeons and dragons out of the stores because it's devil worship.
Really? Are you like 75 or something that you’re so confident about what you said? Bro, I don’t own a gun, nor do I ever want to get one. i think the fact that guns are increasingly portrayed as taboo is part of the issue. kids and even just people in general are so curious and if they’re told to stay away from something and they have no healthy and safe exposure to it with supervision, they will go and find a way to expose themselves to it and it likely won’t be in a safe environment. because we’re always talking about gun control and restrictions and how people are scared of them, troubled kids may start to see guns as rebellious and a way to gain control over people and that just increases their appeal, particularly if the kid is in the depths of those teen emotions almost everyone goes through at some point or another of feeling like an outcast and powerless.
All you have to do is just teach kids how to responsibly handle firearms.

Everyone always talks about the alcohol's culpability for drunk driving deaths, but not the automotive industrial complex's culpability.
In at lot of places, coming home drunk, while trashy, isn't a life-or-death matter because people are walking or taking public transportation home. Or bicycling... which, while still dangerous, is unlikely to result in murdering an entire family of four. Gun makers simply removed those cosmetic features, and kept selling guns that fired the same rounds, at the same rate of fire (one round per trigger pull), as they did before the s-called "ban."

The gun debate is a hard one. I think we should either have no gun restrictions or no guns at all like Australia. But unfortunately neither will be possible. The middle ground will probably never be found and this debate will never end.

Unless you’re looking for it?? There is little to zero gun advertising! The only gun ads I ever see is when I walk past the magazine section in a grocery store lol
Why the term “trouble young men” yet no mental health is being addressed?
I have never brought a gun because I saw an ad for it. I buy guns I can afford and are available at my gun store.
The biggest reasons guns sell so much is because of gun control it has become a lot more popular to own a gun particularly Ar15s only since 1986 when the prohibition on machine guns began the ar15 has been in the civilian market for about 70 years
Before that most people wanted something like granddad's old 30-06 bolt action or their fathers 357 magnum
The best firearms ad is the US Constitution
They advertise hammers, cars, 2x 4's.silver ware
glass bottles pipes , chainsaws etc.
No billboards for gun sales?!?! I guess this person has not been to the South. Every other billboard is for a gun store. There is a billboard I drive past everyday for a gun show that stays up year round. They just change the date since the gun show occurs every few weeks.
I guess it's not exactly the same thing as the manufacturers advertising directly, but exact same result, and with the exact same tactics.
Never forget that rifles are only responsible for approximately 1% of all firearm related fatalities in the United States
I would like to know if the anti gun crowd would stop if every firearms manufacture put in bold print THIS WEAPON IS FOR TARGET OR HUNTING USE ONLY on the front page of the gun manual.
It's hard to justify a semi-automatic rifle or a high-capacity magazine for those purposes. That's why there is often a push to ban the 'assault rifle' - if you ignore the bickering over terminology, it's because that class of weapon just has no legitimate use in sport, hunting or self-defence. It has only two functions: Being cool, and killing a lot of people in rapid succession.

No no, there's no way there have been school shootings. Guns aren't allowed in schools, so there's no possible way right? If anything, what we need to do is to teach gun safety in schools, and allow personnel to be armed. Teach your kids the seriousness of guns at a young age. And don't forget to take a kid hunting.
Guns are a necessity
Just keep praying for the people that will continue to die at the hand of these guns.
I’ve been shooting since I was 15, 11 if you count a BB gun. I own many firearms and have never once bought one because of an add. My first gun I got new was a single shot 12 gauge and I still have it. I own a lever action rifle, bolt action rifle, ar15 a2 clone, a muzzle loader rifle, and quite a few handguns. I own them because I enjoy shooting and I enjoy different actions. The reason ar15s are used so much in shootings is because when you walk into a gun store it’s the most common rifle on the rack. A ruger mini 14 is practically the same gun but isn’t used, it’s also not scary looking. I can’t tell you how advertising effects gun owners because it didn’t affect me. I disagree with the thought that kids shouldn’t use firearms because many of us learn when we are kids, of course it should be under adult supervision at all times. I had guns at 15 but they weren’t under my control, it’s mine in that I shot it, I cleaned it but it was at my grandfather’s house, my parents are actually a little anti gun. Kids should learn to shoot under the supervision of their parents, personally I think they should learn a manual action firearm before a semiautomatic, and of course the firearms should be kept under the adults control. I feel some of the motivation is to stop a new generation from getting into firearms so that guns can in the future be taken away. The reason gun banns were supported in other countries is because most of the people weren’t into them, most didn’t even own guns and were afraid of them. If you can keep the younger generation from getting into firearms the 2nd amendment would be easy to repeal. Kids already can’t buy guns legally and rightfully so, the advertisements aimed at kids are really aimed at the kids parents.
Perhaps you should search the 12 year girl that just killed the instructor trying to teach how to shoot an Uzi !!
@@merycastro2608 that is the fault of the instructor that allowed that. I always start all new shooters with a .22 either a revolver or a bolt action rifle. Once I feel they can safely handle a 22 they can move up. When you are teaching anyone with firearms you are responsible for the outcome.
The best ad for anything gun related is politicians being afriad of it. Bump stocks, FRTs, pistol braces, etc
The easiest way to advertise is to have the weapon included in a modern war shooter like Call of Duty or Battlefield. I'm very certain that kids probably saw modern guns in those games before they saw any social media advertisements. Then it becomes a matter of keeping people who are dangerous from getting those weapons, because that's really where our problem lies, keeping guns out of the hands of irresponsible or dangerous users. But as for marketing, video games are the easiest market because you can use them in a virtual environment where no one gets hurt.
EXCEPT these games aren't meant for children......
"Then it becomes a matter of keeping people who are dangerous from getting those weapons" That's the issue that actually needs to get fixed but one that doesn't
@@Blaze6432 I think most parents buy them for their kids anyways. When I was in middle school and high school it was pretty common to have rated M games like COD, Battlefield, Halo, and GTA. I don't think parents realize the extent of what videogames have become honestly. I mean if you're bullied and have no friends, you're more likely to gravitate towards videogames. Imagine a bullied kid playing the mission "No Russian" for the first time from MW2. Nowadays you don't even need a parent to buy them, you can just say you're over 18 and download them.
The us should not take a bigger stance on regulating them
Thank you for presenting this topic in a fair manner presenting viewpoints from all over. This is good journalism in my opinion.
Actually it's not they misrepresent the Remington lawsuit and they misuse the term assault rifle, an assault rifle is capable of full auto or selective fire. A semi automatic weapon, like the AR-15s and all the other rifles they mentioned in this piece, are only capable of one round of ammunition being fired per trigger pull.
@@woodchuck003 Valid point. Even the AP came out last week and said that journalist should differentiate between automatic and semi automatics because it leads to confusion.
But minus your point, I think this is a good piece. CNBC does a good job overall presenting all sides of opinions. Probably one of the last news outlets to do so in this day and age.
A gun is a useful tool no more no less. An assault rifle is no more dangerous than any other weapon when the person decides to harm others. Focus on why people are resorting to deadly violence in recent year instead of focusing on the tools.
Man, just imagine what these guys have planned for you after you have no means of self defense. They’re desperately trying to accelerate the process right now, but why?
Who exactly are 'these guys?' Because if you mean the government, I don't think your little rifle is going to do much against the government. They have a lot more guns, and people who are extensively trained in how to use them. And remember, if the fantasies come true and you have to rise up against a tyrannical government, it won't be the jackbooted soldiers who come for you first: It'll be your local police department, the ones charged with enforcing those hypothetical tyrannical laws. I find it funny that when Democrats talk about gun owners, they immediately daydream about what the man is "packing."
For anyone who thinks gun control won’t save lives, here in Australia we are living breathing proof that it does.
For example the Christchurch mosque massacre, when an Australian man killed something like 50 people with a high power weapon, and he did it in New Zealand, because he couldn’t get access to the guns in Australia. If Australia didn’t have gun control, that massacre would’ve been in Australia. But since we do, he went to New Zealand for the massacre instead.
As a result of that, New Zealand now has the same gun control as we do, and their citizens are now much safer.
Gun control saves lives, no matter how much you try to justify that it doesn’t.
False. Nice try though.
