This was literally the hardest part of the game, in my opinion. The Antlion attack in the tunnels? At least you had defense turrets and a few allies backing you up with support fire to help push them back. The zombie attack you have to.deal with after you, Alyx, and the Vortigaunt find the dune buggy? At least Alyx was defending you with the sniper rifle when she had a good shot, and you access to great weapons for the Gravity Gun against slow moving targets. The fight against the Antlion Guardians? You had open space, explosive barrels, huge targets you can't miss, and again, Alyx and the Vortigaunt were supporting you. Here, you don't have Alyx, and in my playthrough, I was literally on my own - one against five hunters, plus a fucking strider, and I kept missing my shots and blowing up my bomb too soon. It was LUCK that helped me through this part. All the other times I was alone to.handle a situation, I was reasonably prepared, but this part was just a cruel difficulty spike, even though it's because the stakes are so high. Still, damn masterpiece of a series that will NEVER be finished.
The hunters were called "ministriders" on Half-Life 2 Episode 1,that's why they come as packs with the striders, they are just striders but much smaller and faster.
ThatJ0eGuy That would've been a smarter plan I guess, all I did was walk around and preserve my stamina until I got into a fight with hunters and then blow up the defenseless strider.
We should all be glad we didn't have to deal with GUNSHIPS or HUNTER CHOPPERS in this part. Although I wished Valve added a few soldiers around striders..
ThatJ0eGuy I was playing on easy my first time, too! Although to my defence, I will say that when I started playing, there seemed to be some sort of Steam bug that made it so that you couldn't sprint at full speed unless you typed something into the console! I tried playing HL2 some days ago, and got errors on Steam whilst trying, too. ;*( I'm hoping it's just an error with Steam, and that everyone was getting that problem. ;*( Something about a module, or DLL file being missing, maybe! Can't remember. ;*(
STEJTHEGREATEST I failed the first 300 times I had to get my uncle to do it for me 😂. I still haven’t found another female player (cuz I’m a girl that plays this game) tho 🤷♀️
I tried this very mission about four hours ago after remembering that I had never finished HL2 E2 way back in 2007. This fucking mission was the reason why. Fast forward 12 years and I'm playing it on my Xbox One, and I STILL CAN'T FUCKING DO IT!
Originally, as indicated by the trailers, developer commentary, and the large forces of Combine seen trekking towards White Forest in 'Freeman Pontifex,' Combine Elites were originally to make an appearance here. However, due to the input of playtesters, they were removed entirely. And also, Valve's legendary consistency between levels (the Highway 17 bridge turnoff, the train station suddenly becoming abandoned, and some City 17 maps cutting into each other, to name a few); between Freeman Pontifex and the attack on White Forest, all the Elites have somehow managed to morph into Hunters(oh noes, transformers are working with the Combine!) or were lost along the way(because the Elites are so elite they can't even deal with Antlions).
I think I would've preferred the huge strike force. When they sent striders in this battle, JUST striders and hunters... it felt like the Combines weren't even trying. It's like they asked to fail. Either that or they misunderestimated the rebels. At least I'm sure they won't make that same mistake again! Next time, just send a Combine cruiser, and blast the whole base to oblivion! XD
Makes complete sense that the hunters are the ones attacking the White Forest Base along the striders because the Combine Elites were suposed to guard the citadel and not to go on field and since the citadel exploded many of them died, and since hunters are the ones searching for hostile rebels in the forests with the objective of killing them and because it's a synth that is adapted to pack like hunting and it's adapted aswell to the enviroment makes complete sense to be the hunters standing along the striders to be striking the White Forest Base
You are forgetting that the Combine attacked white forest with infantry first (the secondary silo battle). After that infiltration attempt failed they used striders and hunters. So I guess it kinda makes sense there are only hunters and striders in the final battle. Although, I agree It would be much cooler if hunters, striders and elites were fighting together as seen in the prerelease demo.
This is the part that I hated the most probably in the entire Half-Life series. Those Hunters are annoying. Fighting Xen creatures are more fun plus the routine here is kinda repetitive.
This battle is like that antlion-"minigame" just on a much bigger scale. Oh and I hope you didn't make the same mistake as with hl2:e1 and end the session right before the ending :P
Well, I just started watching this but I'm going to save it for tomorrow. This strider battle is the toughest fucking thing in the entire Half Life series, in my opinion, and I want to enjoy seeing how you tackle it. I hope you figure out that running the hunters over with the car is a good tactic. So is lobbing logs at them with the gravity gun. But man, try playing this on "Hard" if you fancy some serious stress...
Yeah man... you need the car. The area's just too big to handle on foot, plus the radar tells you where the bastards are, plus... cream those hunters with it! I'm sure you figured all this out. :-)
"And in case striders aren't bad enough, recon indicates they're being escorted by packs of hunters..." "Escorted"- as in there for the striders' protection. As in you need to take those fuckers out first :) otherwise they'll shoot them magnussons before you get a chance to shoot them. also... tree logs.
Striders being "escorted" by hunters is like fighting off Mike Tyson clones being escorted by armed soldiers! ;*( And if you think this is hectic J0e, they say in the in-game commentary that they were originally going to have COMBINE SOLDIERS in the frey alongside the striders and hunters for this battle! But they decided against it when the play testers were getting mad at the SHEER FIREPOWER they were up against! It kind of sounds like what Red Faction: Guerrilla ended up being like! Some of the fights in that are SO INSANE, you really do feel like you're taking on a whole army!
IMO , you could have explores the map , or even when you had the magnusson device at the first try , i would have attacked the strider closer than the strider that is miles away from the silo
You can't attack the strider close enough without Hunters blowing up your Magnusson device. Or you really didn't noticed that? Beside that some Striders blow up the buildings at the very end of the map, so you can't attack them from behind. You're literally forced by the game to attack the Striders at the very base, where you have supplies and magnuson devices.
I'm here mentally yelling at the video that turbo is never a good idea in Half-Life 2. The amount of control it robs is absolutely not worth the momentary burst of speed. Moreover, Hunters die from being run over just as easily without turbo. But of course, this speaks more to game design than Let's Playing, since the turbo function is necessary I believe a total of two times among all Half-Life 2 games. As such, in my opinion it should not be there.
It is unwieldy as all hell, though I will admit it has a potential use - when you turn around and a Hunter is way to close to build up any kind of momentum, turbo can be used as a but of a cheat there. Don't think I used it to the best of its ability though :P
huh.. never thought to just run the hunters over with the car. i just shot them with the logs laying all over the place. since this is the one stinking part of the game that isnt littered with ammo or supply boxes. running them over would have been so much easier fml
It's not scary. It's frustrating as fuck. And no, it's not frustrating at the beginning. The end is fucked up. Play the game and you will see for yourself.
This was literally the hardest part of the game, in my opinion.

@Rice Krispies Just be glad, the Combine where so friendly to send them one after another.
Ya this part ruined the entire game for me
So true!
This part made me almost hate the entire game, GLADLY i finished it.
i just played this very part, just for the cool song that plays,
and i did in one try, N O D E A T H S, i wasnt planning to finish it but i did
The hunters were called "ministriders" on Half-Life 2 Episode 1,that's why they come as packs with the striders, they are just striders but much smaller and faster.
False
They are a different species that came from the same homeworld as the striders
One of the most frustrating moments of my life.
TRUE. i had to re-do it a thousand times till' i finished it with cheats :/
same
the last round was hard as heck
@bubba57 magnusson*
@no channel name yet Yeah, just quick save or manual save after every strider you destroy. Definitely makes this a lot easier.
This part of the game was a pure hell and fun at the same time :)
bastlenicom nope, just hell
For me, this part was a pure nightmare
this part was literally "remove the fun"
I completely suck at driving in Half-Life 2, so I actually did this entire fight on foot without using the car.
Man, is that even possible - you must've had to hold ground heavily at about the final base and sacrificed the rest.
ThatJ0eGuy That would've been a smarter plan I guess, all I did was walk around and preserve my stamina until I got into a fight with hunters and then blow up the defenseless strider.
Overwatch Soldier ok i use to do that to
I'd love to see a battle called "Striders vs tripods"
Tripods from war of worlds? İf youre talking about that movie the tripods are way bigger
@@lightweaponsguy5952 maybe jeff's tripods
They torture us with this battle and then return the final blow with the ending. Valve, how could you?
We should all be glad we didn't have to deal with GUNSHIPS or HUNTER CHOPPERS in this part.
Although I wished Valve added a few soldiers around striders..
Who would win?
A very dangerous inter dimensional alien creature fitted with an alien gun and a ramming ability
One vroom vroomy boi...
Vroom Vroomy boi!
Vroom vroomy boi all the way.
I'm glad to finally see someone else other than me fail this battle their first time. ;*D
Hehe, that makes me feel better about it :)

Scary monsters that will give me nightmares for ever
Hardest and most annoying level in the entire game.
Even though it's hard it's a damn great fight
I'm very much looking forward to seeing the next (final?) part of this LP.
So close now, hehehe
What is the alarm sound name?

Never felt my heart go so fast other than this part
This is by far the hardest part of the game so far for me.
That is a hectic fight alright.
Indeed :)
i know the scariest spider ever: striders and hunters
Originally, as indicated by the trailers, developer commentary, and the large forces of Combine seen trekking towards White Forest in 'Freeman Pontifex,' Combine Elites were originally to make an appearance here. However, due to the input of playtesters, they were removed entirely.

Hehe, I assumed at the time they thought the squads of walking death machines could handle it XD
Remember tho , they might have done a full assault at white forest with only elites and there were other bases , so it makes perfect sense
I think I would've preferred the huge strike force. When they sent striders in this battle, JUST striders and hunters... it felt like the Combines weren't even trying. It's like they asked to fail. One of my favorite game scene to play best game ever
Valve still owes me a keyboard because of this part
This battle is like that antlion-"minigame" just on a much bigger scale.

Haha :) not gonna lie I had a similar worry

Okay, I'm impressed. You had a really bad start but learned fast. :-)
Hehe, thanks very much. I remember being rather frustrated by this but I it is one of the most memorable parts of the series.
...
Imagine Ross scott as gordon freeman going trough this
This level I Remeber vividly
This map gave me ptsd the hunters the fucking hunters
Lol, I empathise

I'm very glad they scaled it down some, haha.

The Half-Life games are iconic, but not quite the pinnacle of game design
Got to this part tonight and was like yea fuck this.
Really dreading this.
Beat is a day after this was posted and the entire game was a pain.
I am never playing this game again because of this absolutely stupidly hard moment
I swear around 7 minutes in the video I hear spy voice lines from tf2
Where
Part 16 - Who needs a rocket?
xD
Not I! No sireee...
Wow. This game looks amazing for 2004
Hl2 episode 2 was realeased 2007
Stress level: midnight
If it hard to get strider with device approach from back of strider and kill the hunters
Yeah because destroyers so destroyer so it’s strawberry in to wear to read a car
17:48 this got me laughing hard
This just like gmod but that was a mod for half life till it became a game
The game sound and your voice are horribly mixed. But thanks anyway 'cause the video helped me to settle down about the strider situation in game.
Hola
ı cant finish this chapter even in noclip xd i think its to hard
you have achivmand
This Guy sounds like frisky
Yep. Agree with general concensus that this level SUCKED ASS.
huh.. never thought to just run the hunters over with the car. i just shot them with the logs laying all over the place. since this is the one stinking part of the game that isnt littered with ammo or supply boxes. running them over would have been so much easier fml
