      Nice! This was one of my biggest gripes about the OG Kyosho cars. I also had them wear out, to where they wouldn't grip the shaft, and it would spin without transferring the force to the wheels.

    Memories. I remember putting my Ultima together. Started out with the bone stock setup, rotary speed control, 05 motor. After I blew that up, I upgraded to a Twister stock motor, and Novak T-4 and added Thorp spur gear. It was unbeatable in my neighborhood😁

      Great memories. They were great times back then. My first Ultima I built from all new bought parts from the hobby shop over a year or so. I just couldn't save the money to buy the kit, of course it ended up costing a lot more lol. I ran a JR esc and LeMans 240ST back then. I'm guessing your Ultima would have whooped it too 🤣. Fun times! 🙂👍

    Raced an original Ultima back in 88'. I was all alone in a sea of RC10'S. I made up for it by handing out photo copies (yep, photo copies, which shows how old I am) of an article in RC Car Action featuring Joel Johnson after he won the 2wd IFMAR Worlds. They then got me back 2 years later with copies of an article from RC Car Action featuring Masami Hirosaka, right after he won the 2wd 1989 Ifmar Worlds with an RC 10. And then he won damn near everything else in the next few years, using a stick radio! He didnt win every championship, but WAY more than anyone else. Masami (From Japan) racing for Team Associated instead of Kyosho was the same thing as Michael Schumacher (From Germany) racing for Ferrari instead of Mercedes. And both dominated! "Oh wait, what the hell was my point?" I guess it was Michael Schumacher and Masami were the best in the business, but Joel Johnson was awesome in 2wd too........For one year.

    • @RCHobbyShed
      @RCHobbyShed  4 роки тому

      Good stuff! I never raced but at the time I had to have every part the racers were using if I could afford it. I remember the 87 worlds from magazines and just had to have an Ultima, of course now Joel Johnson was my idol, simply because of winning with an Ultima in (same as you) a sea of RC10's, which at the time were an unstoppable force. You're right about Masami being like Schumacher, both masters of their games. I remember seeing a picture of Masami with his cars and trophies, just wow!

      Thanks mate. Oh yeah I agree 100%. Kyosho knew a lot of people would be running brushless and took the steps needed to make the buggy support the extra power. They could have re-released it exactly how it was and would have been totally fine as it was a great buggy to begin with, but this shows Kyoshos commitment to quality. 👍

    I have been looking into adding a couple retro style RCs to our collection.... I have no Kyosho or Tamiya anything ... thanks for the video....
    Amy suggestions on a couple good kit options if you wanted a Kyosho and a Tamiya for just a bit of light use from time to time , and to display for conversation starters? Something not super expensive and hopefully still available (I kissed out on some of the ReReleases that I would've loved to have, but just got back into racing with my son in late 2017)... and hopefully something that would have decent performance and be fun to drive with like a cheap 13.5 or 17.5 brushless... no severe bashing, just some fun spirited driving...
    Thanks again for the video

    • @RCHobbyShed
      @RCHobbyShed  2 роки тому

      I think I'd go for either an Ultima or Optima for the Kyosho, or a Javelin. For the Tamiya, hmm they have so many lol. So maybe one of the Neo Fighter Buggies or something in the Thundershot series... Thundershot, Fire Dragon, Terra Scorcher or Thunder Dragon. Or even better, a Manta Ray or Top Force would be great. There's just so many choices out there, it can be tricky.

    Nice video. Thanks for the comparison. Are your turnbuckles on the old ones original? Also the new shocks on the re-release are pushed down pretty far to keep the ground clearance. Are they too soft?

    • @RCHobbyShed
      @RCHobbyShed  4 роки тому

      Thanks! Yes the original Ultima only have plastic non adjustable upper links. I have the shocks on the re-release adjusted that way because I ran in at a BMX track. Although the jumps weren't very big I was jumping it a lot. Also I wanted the ride height way up so I wasn't scratching up the chassis too much as the track surface is made or tiny sharp gravel. So to answer your question, no the shocks aren't too soft, I'd say they're just right for the buggy. 👍

    Is the rear camber on your re re wrong?

    • @RCHobbyShed
      @RCHobbyShed  Рік тому

      It's not set up as per the manual. I run quite a bit of negative camber for the surface I run on which is packed clay with fine gravel on top, it's almost like driving on ball bearings. Where I run it's also very open, so a lot of long, high speed cornering. The negative camber seems to help stop it spinning out when cornering at high speed. 👍

    • @RCHobbyShed

      Quite the opposite, although the plastic shock towers make it look cheap. It's actually a far better buggy than the original. Gears are far stronger, slipper clutch added, better shocks, better hex adapters and so on. Even the shock towers (although plastic) are better as they don't bend. If you own an original, you won't be disappointed if you get a 2019 model. 👍
