I keep saying this... my mom 78yrs old i get her groceries and buy very few carb foods. But every now and then that whole week, she will eat only those things and she will be so hateful so paranoid. But when she eats her meat and eggs, she is much better . I have to lie and say they didn't have any bread this week or they did have the popcorn. She will get mad, but doesn't go crazy. It can be exhausting. I messed up by getting her some "treats " over the past holidays and it has really been a struggle to get her to realize that is what caused all these problems.
My mother has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. She has always believed that fruit and home-squeezed orange juice are healthy, and she consumes a lot of it, as well as a lot of bread. She also has paranoia.
You're lucky to make any progress with her. Sugar addiction is incredibly powerful. I've been able to get my mpother-in-law to eat two eggs for breakfast most days, instead of cereal.

Hello gorgeouses been on the carnivore no more sugar cravings no more carbs cravings no more cigarettes cravings no more alcohol cravings just RED MEAT not even salt
I try to eat mostly NO carbs. Last 2 times i had my CMP labs done my Glucose was a point or 2 below what they consider the normal range. The Glucose was clearly produced by my liver and was just the amount my body needed for optional functioning. I absolutely do NOT need to consume carbs or glucose. My liver knows how to produce the right amount and does a far better job than I could by consuming them.
Another thing is that glucose is the primary, not the preferred source of energy, by the human body. The difference here is that glucose will always be used up first because it's toxic and the body will want to get rid of it first. That is why it is important to adhere to zero/very low-carb diet so keep the metabolic state the same.
This idea that gluconeogenesis is stressful and needs to be avoided (through eating sugar and carbs) comes from acolytes of my late uncle Ray Peat. My dad always knew that Ray's prodigious intellect enabled him to advocate silly ideas...
While I totally agree on gluconeogenesis (I've fasted up to 22 days), I was under the impression that if you had ample glycogen in your liver (which is normal for most people), you wouldn't experience much gluconeogenesis, particularly while sleeping.
Great point - I wonder if the keto-flu is caused by insufficient gluco-neogenesis - I think it's almost always framed as 'not utilizing fat for energy' yet maybe is better described as 'not producing enough glucose yet' - any way to stimulate or accelerate that process?
hmm, there is direct proof on human subjects that if ketone levels are sufficiently high carbs are not required. think it was Cahill et al, who showed through a very substantial insulin injection into keto adapted individuals, that they would remain asymptomatic - thus brain can operate on ketones just as well (since brain does not have glucose storage (glycogen) a large dose of insulin rapidly removing glucose from blood stream should result in loss of consciousness, was not the case ofc, but it is a direct proof that brain does not require carbs if one is keto adapted). can look up the study if interested, would be older as that sort of thing i dont think is legal on humans anymore. good times back then tho
What I found on low carb diet is that blood sugar rose! Maybe because of insulin suppression and gluconeogenosis never shuts off and ends up raising the fasting blood sugars, which is exactly what I saw.
@@paulhailey2537 Yes basically. I have lots of fasting blood glucose measurements. I was checking everyday with my keto mojo. It's not just me, you are hearing about it a lot lately. Dr. Robert Cywes has called it "insulin suppression". Has some good videos on it. Basically, eating some carbs fixes it. It's probably not something you see with obese people still losing weight, but more fit lean healthy individuals that have normal blood glucose levels and carnivore is making them worse.
As one who routinely eats raw/semi raw meat, even raw bacon and have been doing this for years. I have never had problems. I have relatives who have had problems with persistent infections. I can't vouch for their diet but definitely not carnivore.
Consumed fiber and plant material actually allows parasites and such to avoid stomach acid, while decreasing the acidity of the stomach. A healthy human has a PH that rivals carnivore scavengers such as vultures. We are made to come across a dead animal that perhaps is partially rotted and consume it raw. Lower class humans up until about a hundred years ago (before AC) still did consume rotten meat. Only the elite dined on fresh meat.
Btw - my pro keto doctor wants me to put fiber and carbs back into my diet and doesn’t want me in ketosis because of this “cortisol argument” and he doesn’t think carnivore is good for balancing hormones. He wants me to do carb cycling to support my hormones but the reason I switched from regular keto to carnivore is because keeping carbs and fiber in my diet was something the problem. Why should I add them back in when I have more success in carnivore?
Every vegan I talk to and any "anti low carb" type I talk to, the first thing I ask is "do you know what gluconeogenesis is?" and "is there a liponeogenesis? Is there an aminoneogenesis?" And if they don't, I don't really waste my time. If they do, I try / hope to get them to understand it's applicability in the body... Rarely, but sometimes it works.
The absurdity around the hatred of carbs in these comments is mind blowing. I'm not gonna knock the carnivore diet when it does help people with certain conditions. But to act like carbs are bad? Wth? I'm 100% on board with sugar, especially fructose, is really bad for you in the quantities it's consumed in processed foods diet. But good Lord, there is nothing wrong with carbs. Furthermore, while you can get more efficient processing fats, an athlete (in aerobic capacity) that eats carbs will always have an advantage. Why? Because it's even more efficient.
It's actually not more efficient. The body converts fat to glucose faster than from carbs, there is something like one or two chain reactions missing. So when the body is fully geared for ketosis (can take years to get there) it's way more effective and efficient. The body pulls fat and makes glucose as needed instead of being on the constant carbs in, insulin up, do something with the excess before we die, insulin crash, need more carbs cycle. A ketogenic adapted athlete can do what a carb athlete can do while fasted. Whereas a carb athlete will need continuous inputs of carbs to maintain energy levels. It's also why a carnivore only needs to eat once every day or two and not feel any different.
Carnivores also generally like to work out on an empty stomach (I do). More intensity. Before I did the typical carb load pre workout thing to get that intensity, which is really just a sugar high and not good. On Keto, my soreness was cut in half. On carnivore, I have almost ZERO muscle soreness. I have to mentally limit myself from overtraining instead of going off soreness, it's the weirdest thing!
