What fears have held you back from bikepacking and how did you overcome them?
You provide all kinds of useful info (for all levels of experience), but I especially appreciate your tendency to also allow a good amount of time for the trails to speak for themselves.
I love the C&O. For nighttime peace in camp, don’t forget to secure your food. Wildlife (e.g., racoons) WILL scour your campsite at night and if they get into your food, they will make noise. I did the C&O with a friend and we cooked and slept in camp the whole way. Camping with others will lower your anxiety. One major anxiety/challenge was getting food. We had counted on resupplying in riverside towns, but we found much of the river valley to be a food desert. The stores near the trail often provided little in the way of good nutrition; e.g. Dollar General. The locals use supermarkets that can be miles inland via hilly roads. Best to identify your sources before you start.
It's not the destination where the value is. The value is in the ride.
Beautiful. Love the C&O.
Nats free protein. Ha!
