- At the northern edge of the Pacific Ocean lies an island chain with a stormy and turbulent history. The Aleutian Islands are the world’s longest archipelago, stretching 1,000 miles between Alaska and Siberia. With a volatile climate and a place where the people fight for survival and territory, the Aleutians have earned the nickname, the cradle of the storms.

Fascinating documentary. Travelled past the Aleutian Islands chain on a merchant ship from Vancouver to China just over twenty years ago, and boy, I'll never forget the storm that the ship encountered - the worst I had ever experienced. I wonder now if the abandoned military bases will be reinstated with the current situation between Ukraine and Russia.
dont think there are any Russian or Ukrainian targets in the Aleutians nor either side billeted at American bases
FINALLY!! My algorithm has narrowed down to almost nothing. Nothing of interest at all, until this documentary was suggested. My curiosity has been rekindled.
Can I recommend North 02, and Fortress of Lugh for some great documentaries if you like that sort of thing
Strangely they never mentioned the Alaska Highway for the WW era
Please watch documentaries about the Island of Bermuda ❤
My home sweet home. My grandma from Attu and other grandma from Unalaska. I'm from the Central Aleutians (Unangax^)
Very interesting historical-educational film. I saw such a complex story about the Alaskan Archipelago the first time and learned such a detailed storyabout it.Thanks to the creators of this documentary.
Stationed at Adak in the mid 80's. I was enthralled with the stark beauty of the islands, but I had zero knowledge of the history. I found lots of old Quonset huts were in various parts of the island but I wish I would have known more of the history at the time.
I worked on Shemya in 1979. Beautiful water. Wild being in 30-70 mph wind with dense fog. Great experience being there. We had old rotted Quonset huts there too. Must have been horrible living like that.
@@MrWaterbugdesign , I was there from 8/'77-8/'78 at NSGA. I still regret not staying longer.
Fascinating planet we live on...
I have been fishing in the Bering sea for awhile now. I come from a fairly boring area in the lower 48 but the Aleutian Islands are my favorite place I’ve been to. I haven’t seen anything like it. I’d love to move here

See, I understand and see the light , and see who else has it, thank you, Linda❤❤❤ I can’t help it, this little light of mine, it shines!
I love Burt’s chuckle! Was listening on my way to bed and heard that laugh and thought 🥵 lol
The adds on utube are so bad, absolutely no effort in these expensive commercials😢
It's really annoying that we the people have to listen to the tik Tok, and temu,,,, China our enemy is telling us to consume.
God bless these people 🙏🏼
Great work
Great historical film. I wondered if anyone considered, during the evacuation, asking some of the Aleutian people to act as advisors and guides for the military (for adaptation to the Alaskan climate)
.
No, that didn't happen. There were other Alaska Natives, Inupiats, Yupiks, Athabaskans & other Native groups were in the military and were invaluable
When was this video/documentary filmed?
probably about a year and half before it was released to the public for viewing...prob the 90s
The Malay archipelago is the world's longest. Not the Aleutian in Alaska.
Bookworm!
True
Very true, this documentary was published in 2002, some of the information is inaccurate as of 2023. Forgive them lol.
Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore all one nation under the Muslim Ummah with many peoples living side by side from Christians and Buddhists to Hindus and Jews. What a place to be. ❤

Human nature. We don't blame beavers for tearing down trees or other animals destroying their environment. Self-hatred or self-righteousness? Kind of funny trashing humans on a computer. Or that you even have time to do so all due to all the destruction. Enjoy the results while complaining about it. Wow.
@MrWaterbugdesign That's probably because beavers and animals in their native habitat are a part of their environment and they do not overhunt and overlog forests to the point of extinction.
@@Qasra7337 they are kept in balance by predation and the perils of life. Thats why invaasive species (which humans are the ultimate one)are so detrimental, becasue any organism will overconsume thier resources if not kept in check by nature
Very interesting
Can you explain how to grow bell peppers indoor please good sir. I’m waiting.
Grow them outside in moist soil in partial shade during the warm season. Don't let them dry out or get too soppy wet.
Such places are esoteric & beautiful yet places that do not need or want people.
Look, but don’t touch is the message - or else!

I blame the chinese for driving the orcas far north and decimating the mammals around the Aleutians because of their stripping the ocean around their own countries coastline and deep seas .. they (the Chinese) are doing the same around africas ocean fish reserves
As if the British and Americans haven’t been doing it for centuries and are now having their corporations do the fishing but they just use cheaper labor(Chinese).
I was Stationed Adak 80-81. 395 days on The ROCK 🪨 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
What was it like? 🤔
Out of 395 Days Stationed on Adak the Sun ☀️ Shined One ☝️ Day. The Wind 💨 Blew constantly Every Day. Snowed 8 Months out of 13 Months I was there and had Alpha Conditions during them 8 Months. Had a 5.4 Earthquake while I was on her (Adak).

The world’s longest archipelago? What about Indonesia?
Don't count, not 'murcan
It's also bigger the indo, hints (world largest)
This place will be heaven on earth when the restm9f the planet is boiling.
❤❤❤
If there weren't any tree's, how did the natives make their kayaks ? There's no mention of the material used.
Driftwood from Kodiak, Prince William Sound, and Southeast Alaska. Here in Kodiak cedar (Chaemacyparis nootkatensis) is popular, but doesn't grow here. Drifts over from SE Ak.
Obviously they used the driftwood seen several times throughout the documentary. That was a very good question. 😊
The Japanese did not gain “a foothold in the United States”. Alaska did not become a state until 1959.
Alaska was an organized incorporated territory which most people consider part of the "United States" which is a country name, not a requirement to be an actual state to be part of. The US purchased the Alaska territory so it was clearly "our land".
But I get everyone now creates their own meanings for words and invent history, so enjoy.
I hope the people will be able to learn to live on their islands without outside input. As for me, my "people's" heritage will die when I die. There's no future for me.
I am not sure of your message, but I find it very profound. I hope you can help me to understand more.
we know there was a land bridge becuse there is EVIDENCE...the islands were much larger then and closer to each other due to lower sea levela exposing beaches and bridges even between them as well as many more islands
Police usually have a rule of thumb, the most plausible cause is usually the cause, so if i follow that rule of thumb I'd say he stumbled across drug smugglers & they kidnapped & killed him 😢 so sorry for his misfortune whatever the case may be, may he RIP 🙏 no doubt in my ind that he is unfortunately no longer alive 😢😢😢😢
What are you talking about?
Sounds alot like exactly what happened when Columbus showed up without a passport and visa, and years later they dreamed up ' Manifest Destiny ', 💀
The Attuan people’s had it EXTREMELY hard history and For More years than fathomable ☹️ and Not to mention the sweet Sea otters 🤬
Leave it to the 'almighty' U.S.A. to exploit Alaska ever since, and also to repress its natives. **This video needs map inserts to show the places mentioned!
You act like the US is the only country to do that.
So you don't think native people didn't slaughter people they found on land they wanted? Native Americans certainly enslaved each other, battled and killed each other at every chance. The US just happen to be the next wave of people taking land from other people. Someday other people will probably slaughter us too. That's normal human behavior that has gone on no doubt from the beginning. All species fight for their place.
IMO it's degrading to native people to call them repressed. Many native people were proud warriors and they fought the US well. Just because they didn't win every battle doesn't mean they should be pitied. If native Americans had worked together instead of incessantly fighting each other they could have probably kept Europeans out. Many native American groups at different times worked with Europeans to slaughter their enemy native American groups. Sure, forget history and just blame the US for everything if it makes you feel righteous. Enjoy.
Sounds like something a person who’s never been to Alaska would say.
Don’t like the US get the hell out!
🙂
These people came from Siberia.
But out of a hagging trust
Just give adka native land designation
The score and music that overlaps the narration can be too loud and invasive at times

See Natives ""crossed"" the ice bridge and entered this continent from Mongolia Asia !!! While Vikings came from the East ,around the same period. The VIKINGS created the very first "Nation Settlement", which is still here today. It has been carbon dated. This other b.s ,is but just that "B.S"!!
Not sure what you're talking about. Humans in N America dates to about 15,000 to 20,000 years ago. Vikings 1,000 years. What's a ""Nation Settlement"? Freshly minted term?
You are delusional 😂

Aluetians are not native americans.
Genetically two very different groups of people
The Aluetians, or the English spelling Aleutians, are islands and contain no genetic material. So yes, certainly not Americans, native or otherwise, or people. They're mostly rock.
I think Alaska history is fascinating, but the history class I had was so boring.
