  • It's been 3 years since I last updated my buyers guide on the 2007 BMW 6-Series E64/E63 650i. What has happened during those three years, have all the detractors been right about it? What about that N62 Engine? Billowing smoke and spurting oil everywhere?
This video is a no punches-held appraisal of the last 3 years of ownership from 2020 to 2023. Do you still fancy buying one - make sure you watch this first!

Hey Timm - I LOVE your videos and your love for the BMW brand! In SEP 2023 I purchased my 11th BMW in my career - a 2014 BMW 650 Gran Coupe. WOW what a road rocket and high quality BMW. It is exceeding all of my expectations. I'm taking care of it inside and out based on your excellent advice on keeping our BMWs like NEW. Keep up the good work.

Great video as always Tim, picked my E63 650i up in Nov last year, hardly driven it but always wanted one. No valve stem problems, a few cosmetic issues but everything else is absolutely spot on. Drives like a dream when it actually comes out! Your videos have helped ten fold so far, glad to see yours is still going strong, cheers!

Hello Tim, mine's a 2007 630i but it's faultless and beautiful despite the fact that some jealous so and so scratched it down driver's side 😭. I've only had to put in a new battery and one runflat tyre in three years! It makes zero sense in 2023 but it makes me smile when I'm driving it. I'll keep it for as long as I possibly can. Excellent update Timm, I bought my E63 650i when I passed my test 18 months ago off the back of your last 6 series buyers guide. So far she hasn't given me any trouble other than needing a new coolant expansion tank which was an easy swap out even for a novice like myself. The panoramic roof does make a big difference especially for anyone small enough to fit in the back seats! lol. Next job on the list is to refresh the interior as the handbrake and gearstick gaiters both need replacing along with the gearstick knob, fellow youtuber thebimmerfixer has some good tips for refreshing the peeling interior rubber paint on the wheel and plastics.

Got my E63 a 2004 645ci 6 speed manual here in Canada. Love it, never winter driven only 160k km's on it and still driving perfectly. No smoke or stem seal issues since I been doing regular maintenance and Liqui Moli every 5k + sealer additive once every 3 years. Magna flow exhaust with a xPipe no resonators and man that V8 sounds amazing. Love the car and the styling just need new shocks as mine are all worn out.

    Hi Timm,
As always, great video! Your channel is such a mine of information for 6 and 8 series owners and is so criminally undersubscribed for the superb knowledge you share. I still have my 2010 E64 650i that your videos gave me the confidence to buy (or rather the knowledge to pick a good one). Since 2010, I’ve had three E63s - a 635d and two M6s - and I just love the design of both E63/4 coupe and cab. I’ve has this current E64 two years now as a semi daily and weekend car and it has been an absolute pleasure to own. It did 4k around France over three weeks last year and I’ll be taking the E64 all around France, Italy and Switzerland this summer. Only issues so far have been an ignition coil failure (£150 at my great Indy), replaced the engine insulation (£50) as it had shrunk a little and one flashing red light hood event that required a new hall sensor. I do treat the car well, however, in terms of servicing with regular oil changes, together with a coolant flush and transmission service shortly after I bought the car just because I intend to hang on to it long term. If these car values remain low, all the more chance new owners will get to experience the fun of owning one of these - if they follow your buying advice in how to pick a good one. If you’re interested James (Jayemm) just did a video of my car last week. Thanks again Timm!

Regarding the softtop sensor - have you done some research in a solution ? I found a guide which shows how to "extend" some holes, which I might wanna try (mines sometimes acting foolish when the car has been sitting in the sun for some hours)
But please don't blame the E64 for the poor clearcoat :-) - the bumber must have been resprayed at some time

Love my 650i after buying for a reasonable price. Had to change alternator, valve covers, oil pressure sensor, oil level sensor, and caliper. We also pro actively changed the alternator gasket, which was brutal. Car is awesome, but I have learned a lot over the course of past 3 years. I'll probably keep this year for another decade. The large back seat holds my kids and we love the top down.

So far it's not been too bad. I think I'd still set aside cash for the valve stem seal job because it will be something that will need doing later on down the line. Even with meticulous maintenance, they will need replacing at some point.
Curious to know your thoughts on the E60 V8 variants as there is a similarity with used values. The ropey ones that need work are sorta cheap with some decent ones commanding 5 figures.

Great vid, 110K 08 mine; showing its age, boot flooded recently again, but at least got the reversing sensors fixed this time after a few holes drilled into the boot, oil leaks galore, hope not stem valves! - better check that vid out! Main problem at present is the safety system showing red - advise everyone not to do your own OBD check - 17 faults ahh! the SRS fail was not usual passenger seat pad or belt tightener socket but 93FC & 93FD - +ve and ground monitoring of shielding?- I think a new battery might do the trick, my independent mechanic is taking a look in May - any suggestions; PS the wife wont's to scrape the car for a jeep for the new pet - GSD

Hi Tim one more since you mentioned prices.
As us DIYers handle servicing and repairs, how does that affect reselling? For example since we do our own oil changes, we don't get stamps in our service books, thus if we want to sell the car , a buyer might wonder if the service was actually done.

I could still recommend any of these cars from the 2000s. You have to find a clean and well taken care of one though. If you buy a cheap one you're definitely going to have to do work. People shouldn't be scared of these either years of information have come out with these cars now and most of the big problems can be fixed and even the electrical bugs are documented now

I know it’s not the same model but I wanted to know if you came across something similar, when I was cleaning the area where the top retracts into I found 2 rubber like bumpers on either side of the vehicle that had broken off. I can’t seem to see from where, any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Here are the following KNOWN issues.
The windshield washer pump was leaking and now failed.
    Blinking green headlight switch lamp
    Parking sensors work occasionally
Antifreeze leaks when it's cold out, or when I turn the heat on.
    Fogged up driverside mirror
The passenger side airbag is bulging throw the dashboard to the point where the seams are visible. (There has to be a way to fix that)
Several hairline cracks on both fenders.
A few months ago my top stopped working. :(
Most of this I can tackle on my own. The Anti-freeze leak has been a real PIA. I can't locate it. I need to get it on a lift.
The top is driving me nuts. I gave up on it when the weather became cold.
For a 19-year-old car with 145,000 miles on it I feel like it's doing pretty well. It runs great. No other leaks, no smoking etc...
