I have a 2009 BMW 650i convertible, with 55,000 thousand miles on it. I was just about to sell my car this year of 2022 until I watched your video. Thanks for helping me realize just how rare, and hard to obtain, this car is going to become in the near future. It's a very special car, and nothing else looks like it on the road even, 13 years later lol. It remains to be "arguably" the best-looking convertible, top-up, or down "touring car creation," that BMW has ever made, and looks awesome from any angle. My car is in excellent condition and drives like a dream, so I'm going to keep it now. Thanks again.

At the time of the making of this video, I had just bought a 635d convertible for pennies a flagship gorgeous machine priced like ford hatchbacks of my youth days. Partly thanks to your videos, last week I replaced it with a 2011 650i convertible, I can assure you, this is one of those you wanna keep. A beauty which will keep giving, without a doubt the perfect daily. Thanks Timm, your BMW wisdom is like a breath of fresh air.

Have a similar situation, own a 2008 650I coupe with manual transmission since 2010, got it with 21000 miles, now 138000 and runs as good as on the first day of ownership. Do most repairs and service on my own and change the oil every 3000 to 5000 miles or at least once per year. Its a great car but can be very expensive if you can’t do repairs on your own. Over the 12 years and 118000 miles of ownership I had to address the following:
    Alternator bracket seal
    Valve cover seals
    Timing cover seals
    Coolant transfer pipe (AGA pipe)
Rear of engine coolant seal, only accessible when removing trans for changing clutch at 112K miles
    Front suspension tension strut arms
Vacuum pump seal ( use Volvo part, much cheaper)
    EGR Valves as preventive
And normal maintenance, coils, plugs, brakes and a lot of oil changes.
Considering the time and milage, its not bad, especially if you can do it right on your own
Still the best car I have ever owned

I bought a 2012 650i convertible with 69k on it in August from a BMW dealer. A few days later, “drivetrain malfunction” warnings popped up and then the dreaded blue smoke. The engine ran hot; oil temps to 250° within moments of starting. Took it back to dealership and they replaced everything - valves, rings, seals, turbo cooler - all as a goodwill warranty gesture; I drove a brand new loaner for a month and they worked on my car. Since then it’s been nothing but a dream. I feel like I have avoided paying for the most consistently cited issue and most costly repair. I honestly prefer it to the new model they lent me - too many electronic things to go wrong. I did upgrade my audio system and had the “MMI Prime for CarPlay” installed and I’m so happy. I will hang on to this baby as long as I can. Thanks, Timm!

With the video's you've posted, viewing N62's has become easy and I know what to look for in service books and receipts. I enjoy the repeated emphasis on maintenance on the M62 and M62TU engines to avoid timing chain guide issues. It never fails here in the US when someone has a V8 for sale many commenters ask if the guides were done. Mind you these are not even people interested in buying the car. Usually kids in their late teens and early 20’s. There has been the issue with immature E38 ownership with the cars being treated a 1/4 mile race cars as opposed to the luxury cars they are. I have a one owner E38 with 97k. I change my oil with synthetic and replace my guide tensioners with no plans to replace the timing guides. Great channel.

Try and keep it a secret for a few months, I'm saving for one now! I can't decide between a 635d or one of the petrol engines, it will be daily driven, maybe you could do a 6 series model comparison with details on the differences between the 630, 645 and 650 and a bit about the diesels as well with particular attention to the reliability issues. My partner had a X6 35d which was a heavy big thing but still got a move on so I think a 635d would be fine performance wise. My daily just now is a 170bhp merc clk diesel and I can live with the performance of that. You come across as a knowledgeable and honest guy and having owned one for years you have personal experience which is worth a lot.
There are still cars advertised for around 5 to 6 thousand which is my budget or it will be by about May, I've just sold my z4 but I've a bike to sell when the weather picks up and a couple of months salary to get so I hope the prices stay flat until then. In the mean time I'm watching every 6 series video I can find, so thanks for the content.

My god, I haven’t look back ever since. The way it drives, it sounds and corners is second to none. Makes me happy everytime I get into it. No regrets. My advice is as long as you can afford it, go for it! Today, BMW no longer makes a 4.8 NA V8 engine and only turbocharged V8s which is even more reason to hang on to it for as long as you can

Great car, choose one 07 or later the best is 2010. Do a thorough inspection and check the car for any leaks. Good maintainance records are essential. The car if well maintained is bullet proof. The e60 chassis is absolutely brilliant, a proper sports car and a true bmw. The 550i is almost as sporty as an m5 E39 but more of a gt car than a track weapon. Never selling mine.

Thanks Tim for the video - I have a 2004 645CI MSports in Australia though it’s a UK import - I have spent a lot of $$$ restoring the engine as the previous owner did not the right things with it though it’s been a dream ever since. I’m not selling it…
The only question I have for you is that I changed the thermostat to a 90 degree to keep the seals lasting longer… have you done the same with your car?

Hi Timm - do you have any videos showing how to replace the rubber trim around the windshield on a 2008 BMW E64? I have got all the rubber trim removed except the top trim above the windshield...I'm having an issue getting a hold of it to pull it out due the metal c channels inside the trim...I know other sites said it would come out without removing the windshield but I am starting to have doubt. Thanks much for all the videos and help!!!

G'day Tim. Thanks for all of your informative videos, they have been a great help over the years. I have a 2006 E64 I purchased 2 years ago from an in-law, who rarely used it, with 15000 miles on it. Apart from computer issues with the DSC ,which fixes itself when it pleases, do you recommend a coolant change, or should it be ok with the little miles it has before worrying about that? It has the blue coolant in it. Your channel and information is wonderful! Cheers mate!

Hello Colin, yes the coolant should be changed every five years or so - if you have a brown top hose then it's a good time to do both: ua-cam.com/video/MqgytwY-zd4/v-deo.html

Hi tim love watching your videos wonder if you could shed some light on a few problems im having with my 650 i drive has stopped working, roof wont operate properly i do have a weird christmas tree of lights when key is first inserted, also recently the car sort of stalls under brisk acceleration, then kicks back in and i get a whump from the back end like a car has hit me from behind, indicators when locking have stopped working and time hss reset itself, its booked in for rework of battery cable,do you think all of this could be due to battery problems put it on scanner and all i got was a code for thermostat fault

If you replace the battery with an exact replacement, same chemistry and same capacity then you can get away with it (I did), anything else and it will need coding

I’ve got a S62 e39 M5, here in the USA the prices for a serviceable 150,000 mile car are north of $30,000. Keeping them maintained through the dealer network is a nightmare both because of their habit of up selling and overcharging, and additionally now, they don’t have qualified experienced techs to work on them. My dealer shop manager told me that none of the techs had ever worked on one. It took them 30 days to replace the clutch and reseal the differential, and I had to return after a week when I found a flex disc bolt on the ground under the car. The question that I have is can I inspect the timing change guides by looking through the oil fill port on the engine, if so what should I be looking for. I don’t have any chain rattle yet but I’d like to visually inspect it if possible. I have a 130,000 mile, Schwartz 2, Caramel, e39 M5 in good overall condition and would like to keep it for as long as it holds up. Appreciate your experience with these cars as increasingly we will have to repair them ourselves.

Hello Lance, you ear is the best tool for timing chain guides is your ear, if it isn't rattling then you are fine. They make an awful chatter when the guides fail, you can't miss it. I saw an M5 with timing chain guide failure and it sounded absolutely dreadful - and it was still running!

I have an m62 (non vanos) question. My car is taking a long time to get into closed loop on cold starts. I have noticed one O2 takes twice as long as the other to respond. It goes into CL on Bank 2 however B1 has no response. Around this stage I get bad missfires across both banks at idle. Turning off and restarting cures the problem for a few seconds.
My question is how long does one expect one of these O2s to respond after cold start?
I probably also have a vacuum leak as the additive adaption on Inpa (thanks to your website for help) is at +15.

Hello Timm! I recently purchased a 2007 650i convertible. After getting home, we experienced a few issues. Check engine light came on, strange lights came on such as passenger seat belt warning, tighten gas cap, high battery drain and increased battery discharge. We have also experienced rough idles after getting fuel, followed by 1 back fire! The car only has 115,000kms. Is it worth repairing or did we end up with a lemon? The dealer has offered to take the car back, full price. I would love to hear your feed back. Thanks! From Ontario, Canada!

Hi Timm. Wanting to purchase a 2004 - 645ci with 95000km [59,030 miles] on the clock. It has a full service history. Accept for the valve stem seals, what else should I take into consideration? Previously had a 2007 - 650i. Secondly, at which stage should the VSS be replaced?

I have a question for you Timm. How is the quality of materials in the interior of these cars? I was actually set to buy a F10 5 series, but put down by the interior quality. The highs where very good, and the lows where far worse then my old E39. A lot of plastic cheapness overall. That made me think of a late model year E63 instead, but haven’t had the change to check one out yet. It is hard to get an understanding from the videos if the dash is leather wrapped for example? What about tactile feedback from knobs and buttons? Any areas you feel BMW cheapened out?
Love your videos, and you got an awesome name as well!

    • @TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation
      @TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation  3 роки тому +2

Hello Tim, good to hear from you. The 6-Series is certainly better put together than the F10, but, BMW are certainly heading for a range-constant build quality with the interior of the later 6-Series being quite similar to the 1-Series! The E64 is not up to E38 standards, certainly not the E38 Individuals and the leather dash. It's not too bad with the wood veneer dash - I would avoid the alloy-finish ones, they look a bit cheap. You will have to see an E63/E64 to judge for yourself, but it's OK, nothing luxurious but better than most.

BMW and their "long life oil" policy has caused no end of problems for these cars inc newer chasis F series onwards. I believe it was all in the name of flirting with the lease market and making a fleet of cars look appealing from a buisness point of view. My little 4clr gets oil and filters every 5-6k. Before this ridiculous 2030 ban comes in it will be my lifes mission to aquire an e60 M5 with the s85 v10. You can count on it Boris lol.

Hey tim do you know how a 645ci smg transmission can be serviced - it has slow gear changes and it also makes a hissing sound whenever the car is turned on or off. The throttle is also slightly jerky, especially when i let go of it during driving it slows down jerkily. - is this related? Thanks

    • @TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation
      @TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation  3 роки тому

It can be serviced Yousaf, but most garages shy away from it as it is quite complicated and need re-calibrating afterwards.
