I am no scientist or a part of anything near space exploration nor do i have an education any way near the subjekt. But for me just knowing, that there are people out there exploring those fronters, keeps my faith in humanity and helps me get up in the morning. I believe i we do not keep pushing the fronters, we will turn stagnant.
Not stagnant - extinct. Mankind is on a deathclock. Our days on Earth are numbered, we've crossed the Ecological Catastrophe Thresholds and there currently isn't a method how to clean the greenhouse gases fast enough and significantly enough to reverse the "Venus" scenario. Sure, we can hope that biotechnology will eventually give us some "CO2 eating floating thing" that we could disperse in the atmosphere and let it consume all the CO2, but that's a fool's hope. We've f**ked it up.
We should have forests planted on the outskirts of big cites.. Maybe even in a ring.. .or future planners can design a layout with parts of wooded and urban areas.. try to equal itself out
She's a real gem this one. The dilemma of choosing one thing over the other is a tempting but ultimately flawed dilemma. It's like saying *"I want to be a doctor but I also want to do painting. I can't possibly do them both."* What's wrong with pursuing both endeavors? You can't enjoy a career and a hobby at the same time? My grandfather was both an architect and an artist. He worked for some of the largest corporations but when he went home he made sculptures.
Humanity can easily do away with the 250 billion $ fashion industry. We don't need to like up the pockets of the celebs, and shareholders for useless handbags and sunglasses.
I agree with the message, but sarcasm has a half life, and also has to have a punctuation when the point becomes serious. This is 100% sarcasm, and therefore unrelatable. Sarcasm needs breaks.
For god's sake. I wrote an entire paragraph on everything I thought was wrong about her speech as I listened. Then she pulled that sick plot twist at the end and now everything I wrote down was invalid. That was pretty cool tho.

Great talk, congratulations. Space exploration is NOT a waste of money and is indeed a very important issue for the future of all humankind, because it really has very positive benefits in our daily life (by stimulating the development of many tecnologies that improve our well-being) and hones our understanding of the universe and can save our species from extinction providing us new places to stettle in the future in case our planet becames uninhabitable or can no longer sustain us. Space exploration is very important and that`s why society and governments should invest a lot more in it.
I can't believe people actually think that most of the downvotes are because people stopped watching before the end. You'd have to be 8 to not spot the obvious sarcasm about a minute into the talk. Doesn't change the fact that the presentation was just annoying. There's about 2 minutes of pretty obvious and well known content, stretched into 13+ minutes of poorly executed sarcasm. Most of us expect TED (or TEDx) videos to have much more original content that's thought provoking, and not be just a gimmick, like the type used on personal UA-cam channels to try and get views.
I know this is sarcasm, but I still want to say in my opinion that space exploration is essential for human survival as earth won’t always be here plus exploring new planets and galaxy’s will lead to new technologies and better understanding over our universe and will bring about a new era for humans, but yeah sorry for my rant, that’s just what I believe
NemeanLion i think global warming is rubbish. Over here in England a frost is on the cards. In frickin May! As for Noah’s Ark, I wouldn’t know one way or another. I wasn’t around in the time of Genesis 6:14 so it could very well be real.
MrSupercar55 Omg, please tell me you’re joking. 🤦♂️A cold spell in warm weather is a symptom of global warming. The weather goes through extremes. It’s not just about hot weather. Do yourself a favor and don’t tell this to anyone, otherwise you’ll sound ridiculous like Donald Trump. Keep away from talking about science.
@@NemeanLion- In other words, everything is a sign of global warming? Warm spells and dry summers? Global Warming.. Cold summers and lush rains? Global Warming.. Cooling and droughts? Golbal warming... Numbers of Ice bears increasing? Sea Ice increasing? Sea level rise constant? No increase in "Extreme weather events" what so bloody ever? Must be global warming.... Sure, why not, and let's not forget the doomsday prophets coming along every ten to fifteen years, like clockwork, promising how we only have ten more years.....
Alexander Kale It’s scary to think there are people like you out there that so vehemently deny science in favor of gut hunches. “Global warming” isn’t necessarily a warming of the globe. Global warming is an extreme of all weather patterns. You don’t know any of this because you’re not a scientist. And neither am I. I trust professionals because they’re educated on the subject. It’s also the same reason you let trained doctors do surgery on you instead of witch doctors. All climatologists do is study weather patterns and factors that affect weather, from the dawn of time. They use the SCIENTIFIC METHOD of observation.....no guess work, no gut hunches from the peanut gallery. They show their observations to the public, but the knuckle dragging morons think they have a better grasp with their extensive experience on the subject. Please.
@@MrSupercar55 From one observation, in one part of the world, during one particular season, you assume that you can extrapolate what's been happening all over the world over a period of centuries??? Did you even pass high school science?
This is like telling a long story to get to the punchline. It's like; okay i get it. Space exploration is like saying lets start over on this newly discovered land over here. It's definitely not meant to help everyone.
Probably someone who is really fed up with listening to idiots who complain of all the money being spent on space exploration... And looking as good as she does, she could have been talking about childbirth, and id still watch it. Or... Maybe not, LOL!
Well , there are a many Ted tallks who issue quite comparable issues , what ´s special here ? It ´s quite not too elusive ... rather misleading in a obvious way . How , exploring space with all of that metal satellite stuff right in front of the window , let ´s say ?
Our planet and everything on it is influenced and dependent on our solar system, our galaxy and the wide space. If we understand them and we would be able to understand our planet.
This talk was terrible. Her sarcasm and smugness made understanding her actual opinion extremely difficult. As a speaker your job is to make your point clear and easily understandable.
I watched 4 minutes and stoped because she omited all the data from NASA that is telling different story, she is talking about 2013 but for some reason dont know that in 2014 Antarctic sea ice extent exceeded any data from period when satelites started to monitor ice levels(1970)... And what about all Ice Ages? Why people like her have PHD in science and in the same time completely lack knowledge that is not a secret for 10 years old kids... You can find proper scientists that are not ready to sell PHD for money or for fame in TV and will show you unbiased data that is telling completly different story!
Thank goodness for the comment section. I honestly was so confused at first and it stopped listening and went to the comment section to see what was going on here Glad that I did.
Who wrote the description of the video? The first paragraph is probably responsible for most of the dislikes. It is written by someone who didn't understand the irony Calandrelli is using. Here is the deficient part: "...Emily Calandrelli’s tongue in cheek summary of why space exploration is actually a misguided and empty pursuit, upon which billions of dollars are wasted every year." That should say "why space is actually _not_ a misguided and empty pursuit, upon which billions of dollars are _not_ wasted every year," or something similar.
Ok so this completely felt like preschool story time. Presentation is a huge part and I get the feeling Emily caused more damage than progressing a cause. Sassy doesn’t work well with many adults, go back to story time Emily.
Wish I went to your preschool. Haha. The sass was a mild annoyance I was willing to forgive and forget about. I 'listened' to this talk with my eyes moreso than my ears ;)
Space exploration must be done, if not now then when? It's a necessity for the survival of our species. Plus, if there are more evolutionary ladders we have yet to climb, it'll be found out in space.
there are always more steps on the evolutionary ladder, as long as we dont fall off said ladder. i dont think we can last in space long enough to evolve ever, but once we find a planet or moon that we can work, we will mos def start evolving diff. then again, your guess is as good as mine
Excellent TED Talk. It's unfortunate some of you didn't get how she managed to marry sarcasm with vision to say how important space exploration is and will be to humankind.
What kind of reverse psychology is this??!? 😂 She had me so upset at first and by the end, not only was I on her side but she had me laughing my head off!!

I'm all for using space exploration as a means to help our current condition on Earth. Can someone explain why we are trying to find life on other planets ? I'm just afraid that humans are going to do what we've always done when we interact with new groups of unknown life... -_-.. (native Americans)
The main question is why are we spending 600 goddamn billion dollars on Army alone? (US army).Space exploration budget to nasa is 16.2 billion which is microscopic compared to army’s budget
I find it interesting that her speech was supposed to be about space exploration, but most of the points she made had nothing to do with space exploration. For example, satellites monitoring the earth is not space exploration.
okay like I'm trying to research this for an essay and this is the least bit helpful. Like my goodness, I get more valuable and strong arguments from the 1st thing that pops up when I google this topic
I read all your comments guys but i don't read those comments which exploite the space research is better ... i request to all of us if you have the knowledge about what is the pros the researchers doing space exploration. .. i believe that if our scientists is find the outer material then they can achieve some new technique like if they seek that in the outer area there is also a planet with having all similar resources like our planet consist and that region which they found more develop latest features then we could obtain new things and also acquired new facilities ... so if you people know about benefits for space exploration then you must comment 😊

Cp vJ She is being sarcastic
We should have forests planted on the outskirts of big cites.. Maybe even in a ring.. .or future planners can design a layout with parts of wooded and urban areas.. try to equal itself out
the sarcasme is strong in this one.
+Azraël Good.
I see, sarcasm. Hopefully most viewers went through the whole video.
Am i the only one who actually believed that she was been serious for a few minutes?
Nope
Nope
I almost jumped up the video in the beging.
I downvoted and was about to close the tab. Decided to read several comments and figured out she is not serious.
Beauty, brains, and sarcasm.....the holy trinity that I seek!
Spoiler Alert:
She likes space exploration
Smugness level OVER 9000!
I've seen way much worse, unfortunately (and sadly it was also from a briliant scientist woman).
And Frieza-Sama over 150 Million!
Your dumbness level over 10k.
this is contributing to global smugging. It's gona be Scisco all over again
I agree with the opinion being presented and cannot dispute the facts. I thoroughly enjoyed the talk. I still think she's absurdly smug.
Myspace was way better than facebook. I fail to see the correlation.
WAY BETTER.... thank you.
She's a real gem this one. The dilemma of choosing one thing over the other is a tempting but ultimately flawed dilemma.
It's like saying *"I want to be a doctor but I also want to do painting. I can't possibly do them both."*
What's wrong with pursuing both endeavors? You can't enjoy a career and a hobby at the same time?
My grandfather was both an architect and an artist. He worked for some of the largest corporations but when he went home he made sculptures.
Humanity can easily do away with the 250 billion $ fashion industry. We don't need to like up the pockets of the celebs, and shareholders for useless handbags and sunglasses.
I came into this ready to hate, but reading the comments is giving me hope
You gotta think about it and not instantly rage quit, but eventually her sarcasm gets through and you see where she's going with it.
she had me going for a minute.
Where u gone?
Lol💦👙?
I agree with the message, but sarcasm has a half life, and also has to have a punctuation when the point becomes serious. This is 100% sarcasm, and therefore unrelatable. Sarcasm needs breaks.
its not 100% sarcasm, she let up ... but probly should have emphasized it more at the end.
For god's sake. I wrote an entire paragraph on everything I thought was wrong about her speech as I listened. Then she pulled that sick plot twist at the end and now everything I wrote down was invalid. That was pretty cool tho.
what about space agencies' carbon footprint? No mention about that
@@alessiodebonis2710 They burn hydrogen with an oxidizer, which is very near if not zero emission.
@@ossiehalvorson7702 Ok i will search about that... but combustion is not the only source of gghs. materials transport etc. do they compensate their emissions? i guess they don't considering they have climate deniers in charge. scientists can say everything about climate change but nothing will change until collapse of civilization will occur. now they want to go on mars... i have no words
The same people that believe Noah’s Ark was an actual event, think global warming is a fairy tale.
I got the joke at 13 minutes and 25 seconds. Do I win something.
a biden pat of the back and squeeze of the shoulders
This is like telling a long story to get to the punchline. It's like; okay i get it. Space exploration is like saying lets start over on this newly discovered land over here. It's definitely not meant to help everyone.
Sounds like shes going to break out and sing LET IT GOOOOO LET IT GOOOOOO!
This method of delivery is the WORST. What type of weirdo thinks this is a good way of going about giving a Ted talk lmaoooo
Ghastor no
Sarcastic, intellectual and beautiful!!. I would be lucky just to have her as my friend
u dont need luck, but confidence will do
Don't read comments. It'll rot your brain.
Too late, because that's nothing my limp frontal lobe can't diagnose!
too late...
The downvoters didn't watch the video past the first four minutes.
Believe it or not, but there are legitimate reasons to down vote for people who finished watching the video and fully understood the sarcasm.
I didn't realize she was sarcastic for the first half. I literally just thought she was dump af hahaha but now I like her.
I love space and our universe
Great great video! Imagine the energy she puts into lovemaking! It hurts so good to think about it. Great video though.
Hey guys, what is the joke at 12:25?
Did you find out? :D
It's the copy-paste command on mac (ctrl+v, ctrl+c on pc).
Took me a while to get that joke since I am a pc user eversince, you probably are too. :D
Thanks for that! As I never used Macintosh, I had no idea, what these symbols could mean...
The entire vid is the joke .It is sarcasm.
The joke is You. Did U never discovered?
Thank goodness for the comment section. I honestly was so confused at first and it stopped listening and went to the comment section to see what was going on here Glad that I did.
The 6.8k dislikers need to go to Chandler Bing institute of Sarcasm for advanced studies.
People disliked this video without even watching it.
How worst and why to explore space?
Who wrote the description of the video? The first paragraph is probably responsible for most of the dislikes. It is written by someone who didn't understand the irony Calandrelli is using. Here is the deficient part:
"...Emily Calandrelli’s tongue in cheek summary of why space exploration is actually a misguided and empty pursuit, upon which billions of dollars are wasted every year."
That should say "why space is actually _not_ a misguided and empty pursuit, upon which billions of dollars are _not_ wasted every year," or something similar.
you're so right! I actually never noticed that until right now! I wish someone at TEDx would change that...
+Dan Sedlacek The "problem" is that all her sarcastic remarks are excellent cases against sending humans into space.
Without A Hint Of Irony
I feel like I was scammed into watching this. I agree with everything, but if I knew the conclusions I would have just passed it over.
Excellent TED Talk. It's unfortunate some of you didn't get how she managed to marry sarcasm with vision to say how important space exploration is and will be to humankind.
This is so tiring to listen to. Get to the point already, sarcastic or not. Thumbs down.
awesome :) you had us in the first half ngl
Maybe there's a lot of problems, but space exploration will solve a lot of them.
Change my mind.
only you can change your mind. others can only present facts. but yea maybe, only one way to find out!
$18B to Nasa is small compared +$600B spent on military each year.
Hahaha ha ha. Awesome. I almost got mad, she nails it tho
Omit my comments this is 2015 technology and headspace really good for retrospective understanding
Oh my gawwd is this actually a hot engineer
Anonymous I know right?
So dangerous...
My office used to a place I could Concentration.
When women try to be sarcastic. Or funny. Or whatever she's trying to be....
She is being Sarcastic to make people who think that space exploration is bad to listen to what she has to say.
And yes, i know it it a 1 year+ comment
What kind of reverse psychology is this??!? 😂
She had me so upset at first and by the end, not only was I on her side but she had me laughing my head off!!
if rocket science doesn't work, she has a bright career as a comedian
Her grammar is appalling.
Wow her sarcastic sardonic editorialization it's starting to find a warm place in my heart and I'm stirring identify with your humour. I think I'm looking in a mirror. But she has much more fashion sense of me.
This talk seems to be very political, without offering much insight.
as long as we live in a greed is good mentality ... we will never solve our problems ... we will destroy ourselves ... and we will deserve it
I would marry her and than divorce so i can marry her again.
Over the last Seventy years the Beautiful Australia i grew up in is Dying dramatically both ecologically and socially ....do you know why ?
"Space Exploration is the Worst" ...wait what?! xD
she was being sarcastic. watch the whole video before commenting
Yea, no shit sherlock...
Did I just watch Legally Blonde 3: The Darkening?
You need to watch the whole video and that will clear up things.
Sure she uses sarcasm, but it’s basically to highlight the ignorance of the right and their science denials.
Science denial is not a left right split. No issues with you having a left wing position, but don't attack the right because you disagree with the politics.
No one would have travelled anywhere including the new world with this outlook
I'm all for using space exploration as a means to help our current condition on Earth. Can someone explain why we are trying to find life on other planets ? I'm just afraid that humans are going to do what we've always done when we interact with new groups of unknown life... -_-.. (native Americans)
"they had us in the first half not gonna lie"
The main question is why are we spending 600 goddamn billion dollars on Army alone? (US army).Space exploration budget to nasa is 16.2 billion which is microscopic compared to army’s budget
Because Barry Obama had basically drove all military into the ground. Thank God we got Trump in to build it back up!
But that snowball tho...
I'd have shed a tear for that senator. I guess Oklahoma just isn't the place to be right now.
Who dislikes this? This is great. Two-thirds through.
The whole time I’m like “you’re too smart to think like this lady!!!” Others might not be smart enough to catch on
Universities are walking 65 years behind and patent office 67 years. 18 years old person is too old to be recruited and university is out of business for the sector. Patent office has lost it's function. Peace I wish with all.
