George Chuvalo Interview (p1) "... I Won The 2nd Ali Fight!"

  • While speaking with George Chuvalo what I find interesting now, in retrospect, is that a lot of Muhammad Ali rubbed off on him. I mean that perhaps not in the sense that he talks a big game, or hurls hilarious insults, but that he is a very charismatic individual, who doesn't shy away from talking about himself, or his past.
    It is a past that needs no introduction, but usually gets one because of the names, and people attached to said names, who shared the ring with him. Chuvalo fought 'em all, and did his country proud.
    Down here in the states we have this running joke about how Canada is filled with pansies who can't fight. After meeting George, I sorta laugh just a little less when hearing that joke.
    God bless him.

    It must be recognised that Ali was the greatest boxer ever to step into the ring and still George Chuvelo fought like a lion. George deserves full respect and no criticism.

    I love Chuvalo's guts and fighting spirit, but he must be joking! Ali won 11 of the 12 rds in the 2nd fight. I've seen it many times. I scored it 11-1 or 10-1-1 every time I've seen the fight. Sorry George. Not even debatable.

    That urge to fight to the death is okay, because having a warrior spirit often defines greatness (as it did with Joe Frazier, Rocky Marciano and Evander Holyfield), but the referee and corner should always be concerned about their man far more than the a ring victory etc...

    George is a personal friend of mine. He is not well and at age 81, is suffering severe dementia. He is NOT punch drunk. I'm sure the many blows he took did not help, but there aren't too many people who reach age 81 who don't suffer from some type of brain dementia.
    Please pray for George. Sadly, I don't believe he will with us much longer. Sorry my dear friend if I spoke too openly, but you are loved by millions and deserve every prayer said in your behalf. You touched my life so deeply. Keep punching, my pal. I love you like the father I never had.

    Every round a separate clip? You do get those kind of uploads too, but when you have a lot of rounds it's a pain in the butt because you have to keep changing them over. What do you do? Have a panel discussion between rounds or is there more option on the freeze frame? In any case you do get whole fight uploads or in a varying number number of parts...hey, even two rounds in one clip would do you and you get quite a few of those.

    And? I was born in Canada to Croatian parents, still live here, but I don't call myself "Canadian" or that Canada is my homeland. One thing you must know is that Croatians are very proud people! I call myself Croatian when someone asks me "what is my background", for Croatia is my true homeland. Croatian blood runs through our veins, and that is all. Calling yourself "Croatian-Canadian" is an oxymoron in the Croatian community here. You're considered "Croatian" and that is all.

    I agree, Ali did convincingly beat him both times, but Chuvalo did give him tough fights, he was very durable... Ali did clearly win...

    I'vw watched both his fights with Ali, and the 2nd fight was a brutal beating, Ali unmarked and George's face a bloody mess. I'd give him the 2nd round, but it was close and I think after Ali didn't take him out in the first he took most of the 2nd round off. The scorecards also reflect that. George did win 4 round against Ali, it's just that it took him 2 fights to do it. Nice guy, nice left hook, but I notice in interviews he's a lot better than he actually was.

    That's true bro... Yeah Marciano against Ezzard Charles man, he had his nose split in two literally, he could've been killed (in the rematch that is) but he kept putting pressure on Charles and eventually KOd him... And Frazier in the Thrilla in Manila, he kept getting battered all over his face (while giving Ali his own brutal shots) and would never quit.
    Holyfield - Just watch the Riddick Bowe trilogy, he takes beatings and beatings, but never quits... He was a warrior.

    Just like the first time,Chuvalo again fought a very good fight against Ali the second time. Ali won it without question, but George - like always- did himself and his country proud. The fight I remember being terrific was Jimmy Ellis and Chuvalo. Ellis could hit and he hurt Chuvalo a few times. I was for Ellis, but I definitely didn' want him to knock Chuvalo down and ruin his biggest claim to fame. Ellis won the decision- I'm going to look now to see if someone has posted it.

    Foreman might not have been the most stylish of boxers and may have been nickname the mummy but, he surprised a lot of people with his ability to cut the ring off... His power was devastating and he beat some real champs who were at their peak... not some phony ass bums like Tyson beat... Berbick? Lol! Bone crusher Smith? Lol! • @samebar
    @samebar 11 років тому

    We're not arguing, we're having a discussion & no, I'm not crazy, I didn't say his eye was hanging out of his head, but the fact is that the socket holding the eye was badly fractured & the eyeball dropped into the skin portion underneath, still appearing in place & able 2 see. There was however no way he could carry on. He underwent extensive bone surgery (nearly a 1 yr gap till his next fight) & they repaired the socket so well that it was a fair bit stronger than the undamaged 1.

  • @samebar
    @samebar 11 років тому

    Determination can kill I agree, whether all the great champions would consciously die in the ring, I'm not sure. Rocky said he was never really hurt in the ring & got out after 8 years. Ali who took everything but the kitchen sink when it comes to shots, always believed he was in control. Frazier did say (& I believe him) he was willing 2 die in the ring & they sure broke the mold they made that little guy. Haven't watched Holyfield, as 4 the Corner -some of them are willing 2 fight 2 the death!

  • @truebeliever786
    @truebeliever786 11 років тому

    Yes I know, the stoppage was 100% justified, so I'm agreeing with you LOL

    @truebeliever786 i wish people who upload fights upload one video per round and every round is uploaded. that way, it's easier to analyze and people commenting below can vote or come to a more objective decision. I think the 2nd fight was closer than the first fight. Chuvalo didn't focus as much on the body and Ali wasn't as fast as he was during their first fight in 66.

    It's that spirit & ego that won't admit defeat until he's pulped, but we can c Foreman was annihilating him & that rec of not being knocked off his feet he's so proud of would have ended in the next few secs. His unrealistic view of what was happening there is no different to his ridiculous view that he out jabbed Ali in this fight here. Moreover his short neck & ability to take punishment would have stood him in bad stead with Foreman, Ali blocked the shots with his arms. Chuvalo with his face!

    Chuvalo makes a good point weather you agree with him or not,ali was hit throughout his career,where the myth he was never hit is pure insanity watching the fights he was in its like the commentators are trying to convince you he doesn't get hit?This is laughable.Ali was not known for his defense at all,anyone who know boxing knows this..the greatest defensive fighter of all time ever was Tyson.Even ali admitted himself he relied on taking punishment to wear down his opponents,even his own trainer Dundee even stated his defense is not good at all he relied on speed to avoid punches and well speed without skill will not work all the time no matter how fast your reflexes are,eventually you get tagged.

      +Will Marini Speed and lateral movement is a defense and Ali was the best at it for a heavy weight. It is true that in the later years, when his legs where no longer what they were, he relied on taking a lot of punishment. He would start out the first few rounds quite strong, retreat to the corner in the middle rounds, and come on strong in the later rounds.

      Donna Clark However 70's ali would defeat 60's ali...better timed shots/better punching power and chin surpasses just footwork . If you could create the footwork of ali of the 60's with the smarter and stronger 70's ali you would then have a better ali,but he did not exist.

    His eye didn't drop out of its socket, are you crazy? Both his eyes are there. It was badly damaged though and the stoppage was alright.

      Ali got 0 points in this fight for aggression. Judges, referees and crowds get really pissed off when a stick and move "artist" like ali spends the entire night jabbing and running away from the stronger, tougher more dangerous fighter. As usual, Chuvalo carried the fight while ali ran away. Chuvalo taunted ali and tried to shame ali to come to the centre of the ring and have a fight. But, big surprise, ali kept dancing around like a big over-rated pussy. Chuvalo got full points for aggression in this fight and caught ali with left hooks that would knock a current day heavy weight through the ring ropes. Gotta give ali some credit though, he sure could take a beating to the body and brain and not hit the canvas. This was a great fight, I loved the part when ali's corner started pissing their pants and screaming at ali: "he's stealin' the show!! he's stealin' the show!!" Ali only one 2 rounds more than Chuvalo in this war in Vancouver. My other favorite part was when Chuvalo slammed Ali with a hook and his hair stood up, and he retreated back first into the turnbuckle to try and recover. That's when both the sporting press said he should have finished off Ali. George is still pissed of for not breaking him down in the corner. Perfect opportunity. Very close match. Great historic fight between two of the greatest of all time.

      I don't know which fight you watched, but the one I saw had Ali landing 10 times the shots. Jabs or otherwise. That's what wins fights.

    • @RaulGroom

      Mauserman Anderson This is ahistorical. There were three judges at ringside scoring the fight on the 5 point must system. On one card Chuvalo lost every round. On the other two cards he lost every round but one, with one judge having one round even.
      So out of 36 total rounds on all three cards Chuvalo won two, tied one, and lost the other 33. Like the fight in 66, it was a tough fight, but not a close fight

      ALI was given a lot of fights that could have been a draw but was given the fight because ,either he was Ali and was the headliner or Ali would cry like he did after losing to JOE FRAZIER and calling the judges and ref racists haha what a pussy loser.Ali lost against Norton all three fights according to Foreman ,who should know,he lost against Shavers,he lost against Frazier the second fight and he lost against Chuvalo.

  • @samebar

    So Chuvalo says. Ali allowed him 2 hit the lower part of his back...Chuvalo kept doing it in the clinches so Ali on several occasions held him around the neck & told him to hit him harder. As far as the rest of the fight goes, Ali totally out-boxed him .
    Every boxer is convinced that if he isn't knocked on his ass but loses, that the judges stole it from him. Chuvalo's claim that he out jabbed Ali in the 2nd fight is ludicrous. Foreman was about to kill him & he was angry his manager intervened.

    True the man did seriously want to fight to the burger, but his tales after the fight are much like fisherman's tales about the one's that got away. To want to fight to the death is...er...fine I guess.

    Ali was a man possessed, obviously not by the Real God, Ali said to Joe Frazier, do you know who you're fighting; you're fighting god. The man had an EGO problem, big time. He needs to lay down those silly dumb beliefs, Repent of his Sin, and trust Jesus Christ as his Personal Saviour. God Bless, Sam Young.

    FIRST of all, Ali NEVER went to the hospital after fighting Chuvalo...thats a big LIE that Chuvalo started himself. Ali LAUGHED at Chuvalos (illegal) kidney punches and allowed him to whale away at them...you can see it on the video. And as far as George winning the 2nd fight w/Ali, thats a complete joke. Ali won almost every round on all 3 of the judges scorecards.

    Fraizer was longer in the hospital after the 1 fight that he won against Ali..I like Chuvalo but he is talking smack this time..I have seen both their fights and Ali wins hands down in both of them. To fast and simply to good although Ali performance against Chuvalo was not amoung his best showings.. Chuvalo was tough and rugged and was unlucky to not be the world champion.He is a good guy but Chuvalo tries to sell himself a little to much by saying he won the secound Ali fight..

    Maybe brandon was talking about his whinging & trying 2 squirm his way mentally around a loss. Tough guy, sure, could we have done what he's done? No way, but anyone who can't admit to defeat & keeps on about it is not being graceful & is doing themselves a disservice in the eyes of others..."I went dancing with my wife so who lost?" "I out-jabbed him in the 2nd fight" "I beat Patterson" "I would have beaten Foreman if my manager hadn't stepped in"...stop it George, your boring! C what I mean?
