    Dumbledore always seemed to be the chink in Voldemort's armour because despite the dark lord achieving a power that many could only dream of, the headmaster always seemed to be able to figure him out and work a solid defence against him, even if the odds were highly in Voldemort’s favour.

    Dumbledore's not impressed face at their first meeting probably spooked him. Dumbledore's unwillingness to fall for his charms at school fueled this paranoia. When he got hagrid expelled but dumbledore argued strongly to keep him around must have been shocking, considering hagrid was a half giant nobody to tom so he must have thought dumbledore did it to spite him or knew he was the real culprit but chose to stay quiet. If the timeline is right, tom was already at borgin and burkes when the duel with grindelwald happened. There were eyewitnesses to this and tom will have read all the dark magic dumbledore did and really got intimidated.

      yoo that actaully makes alot of sense since dumbledore dueled grindlewald in 1945 and that was the same year tom riddle had graduated from hogwarts. what if tom riddle was there and he witnessed the greatest duel of all time and he saw dumbledore true power and that made him hate dumbledore even more seeing him pull off magic he could only dream of and winning over the elderwand in a legit duel when he had only a regular wand against grindlewald

      Dumbledore may have suspecting Tom For openning Chamber of Secrets, but whitout any evidences, he coudn't do anzthing about it. just like there was not enouth evidence to take down Hagrid, yes, he may be expeled, but considering total amount of damage, have he be truly proven to be guilty, sentence would be much more severe then that.

      Like u I think it was the total some of Dumbledore's knowledge, power, and abilities that Voldemort feared. He knew if Dumbledore figured out his secret. Dumbledore could kill him. And Dumbledore had an ability to figure things out.
      Maybe Voldemort also feared that if Dumbledore could duel him to the point where Voldemort was in such a weakened state that he couldn't defend him mind. Dumbledore could have searched the secrets of Voldemort's mind and found out the secret of the horcrox

Voldemort used fear, people died for Dumbledore just because he was an incredible leader. Dumbledore and Voldemort were close in terms of magical powers, but when it came to wits, wisdom and intelligence in general not just magic specific, Dumbledore is so far above Voldemort. Dumbledore studied wizard behavior for more than a century, look how interested he was in Voldemort, Harry, how magic interacted with emotions etc. Dumbledore studied wizards, he knew everything about Voldemort, learned all his secrets, without ever using legilimency against him Dumbledore wasn't just an incredibly powerful wizard, he would've been a genius even if he was born a muggle with that intelligence combined with insane emotional maturity which is usually unheard of in people with genius levels of intelligence.

    I always believed that Rowling missed on a great opportunity for moral depth when she didn't cast Dumbledore in Slytherin. Think about it, Dumbledore has always been drawn to power and glory, certainly in his youth (ergo when he got sorted), and he couldn't even shake it off afterwards. Even his 150yo version was still avoiding power because he didn't trust himself with it, that's how much ambition and power-hunger were rooted deep within him. Not only it would've made a lot of sense to have him be in Slytherin, it would've allowed the series to explore how the two greatest wizards to have ever lived, coming both from the same house, ended up on two radically opposite moral positions, and would've shown how much free will and individual choices are more important than background and where you came from. It would've provided a much more beautiful and nuanced moral message than the black & white version we got instead.

      @pontusbackman1863 8 місяців тому

      I think it wasn't as much of compassion as it was to prove Tom a point, that the path he chose could never lead to anything else than destruction and violence. Because there would always be those who would rather stand up against him (and likely die while doing it) than live under his power.
      Yes, good old Albus always saw Voldy as the boy Riddle he met at the orphanage, but he also knew that boy did not exist anymore, he had gone too far.
      So by calling him Tom, he also challenged him to accept the fact he can't ever win..

    I never interpreted the cave as somewhere that Tom took people to torture them, I assumed that there was something magical in the cave that because he was magical or the Heir of Slytherin or whatever spared him and showed him something impressive. However, when he tried to show it to the other children in some vain, desperate attempt to make friends, the magic in the cave turned on them instead rendering them mute and unresponsive to others forever.
    Tom doesn’t strike me as the type of child who would go THAT far away to just torture them as he could do that in the orphanage, I think he saw something he wanted to share but as soon as he did, he knew that he was different afterwards and treated everyone else accordingly.

    I have a slightly different interpretation. Dumbledore feared nothing except for one thing, and it wasn’t Tom. Dumbledore feared the knowledge that it was actually him that cast the spell that killed his sister, Ariana. Dumbledore knew that he would die one day so he didn’t fear death. Tom feared Dumbledore because he wasn’t ready or willing to die, unlike Dumbledore. This is why he wanted to kill Dumbledore so badly, everyone was scared of Tom and those who weren’t where killed, except for Dumbledore because he happened to be superior and more powerful than Tom.

    He feared Dumbledore because he could not intimidate him, could not read him, and could not control him or outwit him. Those were major weapons Voldemort used against every foe...and ally. .to gain some sort of advantage. And that is key...Voldemort MUST feel he has some advantage he can exploit over his adversaries. Dumbledore had nothing he could exploit directly...so tried possessing Harry...which also backfired. So, there was fear....a good healthy fear, if you ask me. 😊

  • @smokedbrisket3033
    @smokedbrisket3033 2 роки тому +9

    I think he feared Dumbledore because he knew what Dumbledore was capable of. Remember, Dumbledore was well short of being a saint as a young man. Given his relationship with Grindlewald, it's reasonable to assume Dumbledore had more than merely dabbled in the dark arts. And I think Tom was likely angry or jealous that Dumbledore showed a capacity for change. Dumbledore's murky youth probably put him in a good position to be able to read Tom well, so he was never caught up short by him, nor was he ever charmed by him. He knew what was under Tom's skin, just as he knew what (at one time) was under his own.
    Continuing to call him "Tom" just served to underscore the point that Dumbledore knew who Riddle really was deep down. This had to have unnerved Riddle greatly.

Yes I know that Severus Snape cast the Killing Curse on Dumbledore, but Dumbledore would have died anyway, duo to curse that was cast on the Gaunt ring. And to further extantion the resurrection stone, one of the Hallows that Dumbledore was obsessed with. He didn't prepare it especially for him, but in this way he defeated Albus without dueling. I'm a big fan of the channel but I'm going to be a bit critical here with some of these videos. The entire point of this video implies that it wasn't already well established why Voldemort was afraid of Dumbledore. I thought to anybody who actually read the books though it was pretty common knowledge. In half-blood Prince we learned that Voldemort felt that he revealed way too much about himself to Dumbledore and was terrified when Dumbledore lit his wardrobe on fire. Voldemort always knew that Dumbledore was a powerful wizard and Snape said to Bellatrix that even Voldemort acknowledges that Dumbledore was a great wizard. So this question has long since been answered.

    Dumbledore had a great knowledge of dark magic, but he did not use it. At least not in mature age. I think Voldemort was afraid that Dumbledore would discover his secrets, which Albus actually did, and find a way to defeat him. At least that was what he had thought until he heard part of the prophecy and the attack on the Potters. Then he had to fear, too, knowing the attack hadn't waved away the danger of the Chosen One. He certainly had ceased to fear him after Dumbledore's death, and that was his huge mistake. Dumbledore had prepared his death in advance and how to proceed with plans from beyond the grave. This was not what Tom Riddle had foreseen.

    @pontusbackman1863 8 місяців тому

    The real obvious reason ofc is Dumbledore knew about his life before Hogwarts.
    Meaning he likely also knew about his connection to the Gaunts.
    His horcruxes would be close to impossible to find without that knowledge.
    So no matter how much he wanted Harry dead because the prophecy gave him a reason to believe he has powers to destroy him, he knew Dumbledore was the biggest threat as he knew about his past. Cause he was the only one who likely could find his horcruxes. And as long as they existed, there was no real threat to him, no matter what some prophecy said

    Hey everyone! When UA-cam pops Dean's videos up for a star rating and review, make sure you give him 5 stars and check everything applicable in the review! He deserves to be bumped up in the algorithms by all means possible for such great work on this channel.

    I don't think that Dumbledore feared Voldemort. He was never afraid of dying and so could never be afraid of Tom Riddle in the same way that Riddle was afraid of him. The only moment in which Dumbledore betrayed fear in the face of the dark wizard, was when he knew that Harry could become a target. I don't really see, where the unknown comes into this, however, especially when Dumbledore himself is very well aware that the unknown itself is nothing to be feared. He even tells Harry this at the hiding place of the locket. It seems to me, therefore, that this point isn't really valid.

    Voldemort did not feared Dumbledore because Dumbledore was more skilled. It was because Dumbledore might knew he had created horcruxes. Dumbledore was also Supreme Mugwump which mean he had the whole wizarding world backing him up.

      @denizkenger52 2 роки тому

      @@headstrongbachelor3152 Dumbledore is a teacher, he's not gonna stop teaching students to go after Voldemort alone. And the first wizarding war is scaled around 10 years and Dumbledore was the leader of the secret org that was fighting the deatheaters: the order of the phoenix.
      Even the time they did fight, Dumbledore was removed from his post as headmaster and he was the one that made the plan to lure voldemort to the ministry using the prophecy as bait. It was Dumbledore who caused their fight. But in first wizarding war, Dumbledore would have to break the laws to seek Voldemort and decide to take him out plus he simply would have a hard time finding him in the first place.
