This is how to make a spark plug ignition buzz coil for your custom projects like pulse jets, hho, turbo jets, firework igniters, potato launchers, etc. Feel free to ask me any questions you may have about this build.
(NOTE) This diagram shows all the ground wires connected to each other then all routing to the negative of the battery. If you have a high voltage coil you need to ground the battery, relay, coil and spark plug to the chassis!!! Not to each other like the diagram shows or the spark may discharge inside the relay. Also make sure the relay you use has pin 30 and 87a connected when its off. (some relays are connected through 30 and 87 when its off)

    Hey Mike,
Great job! Thanks for simplifying everything. I searched a long time for something like this, it will work great for my model I.C. engines.

Hey, man, thanks for posting, especially the schematic. I built one for my Hercules JK stationary engine. It works great.

Hello! I couldn't find a whole lot of information on Buzz boxes, just lots of boxes for sale. I have a Perkins hit and miss gas engine that my friend willed to me. Problem is we never got it running before he passed on. I built your buzz box and it seems to work just fine by just using a spark plug. The engine has a cam which is timed by a gear on the crankshaft. There is a bolt attached to the cam but I don't know what wire from the Buzz Box should be connected at that point. You mention a 600 V. capacitor being used. I don't know where to install it. Thanks for all your help. WE need more people like you that know how to explain things.

Depending on how many volts your coil is trying to put out you might have to have the battery, the relay, the coil and the spark plug all grounded seperatley to the vehicle or project your working on and not through negative wires that connect to eachother. If the negative from the spark plug goes to the negative of the relay it will not let a spark generate. Hope this helps!

I just finished building my buzz box , always wanted one , but just wasn't quite sure how to work it out . well from your video , I have built myself a mighty fine buzz box. and I just wanted to stop in and thank you ..... ☺️☺️ for your instructions . as they were completely simple , and I got all my stuff off of eBay for under thirty bucks . I would like to send a picture of it to you. but there's no way to do it from here . but if you email me to my email address . I would be more than happy to send you a picture of it ... ( I think you will be impressed at what I built from your instructions ). once again, thank you very much keep up the good work.......

Mine worked for about 5 seconds as well before burning up the relay, you can see it sparking inside the relay.

@offom If the relay is overheating then the most likely cause is the spark is being discharged inside the relay itself. This would be from the spark plug ground being connected to the same ground wire as the relay. On lower voltage coils this is not an issue but for higher voltage coils you need to have all your ground wires grounded to the chassis and not connected to eachother in anyway. In my diagram it shows all the ground wires connecting to eachother. This works only on low voltage.

@SthealthRaider I believe so if I'm not mistaken I think that is how they did the set up on the old school Fords. (or something similar)

The condenser/capacitor thingy is supposed to protect that from happening. Did you get one big enough? Also is it hooked up in parallel or series? It needs to be in parallel so the electricity has an easier time going into the condenser than the relay. PATH OF LEAST RESISTANCE WINS.

Is there a way to tone the device down a bit so it does not jump that much distance (other then the gap on a spark plug) ??

So where would I connect the other side of the coil? The diagram in the video has it going straight to ground. Thanks!

It sounds like you might have a defective relay or it is hooked up wrong. If you can get sparks with a switch turning it off and on manually and then hook up the relay then it doesnt work then I would say try a different relay. Make sure too that the power is going through the pin that is always connected. Usually 87a is that pin but make sure by using an ohmeter and touch the positive to pin 30 and the negative to 87a and if the reading does nothing then you want to power the coil with pin 87

    First off, AWESOME video. :)
I have it set up, and the relay buzzes but stops when I hook it to the coil.
Once I hook it to the coil it will still discharge when I disconnect it but the relay stops buzzing. Can you give any advice? Thanks!

there are different 5 pin relays so the one with 87A and 87 switching is the right one. if one gets a 5 pin relay and it has 2 87s in series and it switches off the 30 that's a wrong 5 pin relay.

Hey buddy i have searched alot but cannot find any instructions on wiring it to a GSXR 1000cc motorcycle which has a coil stick (coil is one piece with the plug plastic).
My current setup is parallel capacitors pos (+) =batt pos and neg to ground to chassis of the bike which i believeshould be same as ground for the plug.? I have pics if required.
Will this work or do i have to ground to each individual plug? I LIKE THE IDEA OF USING THE RELAY as i believe is the distribution point like you have on yiur schematics.

We built the circuit you have shown. We used ignition coil and condansator from the car system. Our relay overheats after 5 seconds or so. What will be the specifications of condansator and relay to use them with car battery ?? Thanks so much.

Hi Mike may I ask for how long can you keep the high tension coil on before it gets too hot? I am given to understand that there are some coil which are oil cooled!!! I want to use this coil on an old stationary engine.

Does the ignition coil in this video have a internal resistor? I see they make these coils with and without the internal resistor.

Sir I have question culd those relays replace ignition modules? I want to build waste spark system useing just relays in reverse polarity culd I some how use my induction triger inside the distributor to activate those relays? The thing is I belive my gm 4 pin ignition module is polarity senzitive and aperantly I have voltage regulator inside my dashboard I wuld like to bypass that problem because I found on my starter motor R terminal selenoid so I want litel more voltage and curent on engin start up because of winter time I always have problems starting due to many reasons expecialy bade fuel. So any thing you can help my?I some how figured out that I culd add some capacitors with that ignition coil for litel more power hoter spark just on start up .

I'm not sure on that one. I would start with just getting a different car battery with the highest cold cranking amps (cca) you can find and see if that fixes it. The truck was engineered to work without mods originally so I would try to keep it stock.
