Bought this amp a few days back. One of the few left to buy new in NZ. Awesome sound, so massive. My last amp, a Blackstar HT5 sounds weak in comparison. Using a EVH 2x12 to give a voice to this beastly amp. The first amp I had was a Fender Frontman 15g - yes you can laugh at that toy, I do. Don't think I'll be upgrading from the Dual Dark, this was the amp I was waiting for. There is no upgrade after this.
From what I've heard from this amp, it sounds like it's going to be the amp for the classic british rock/metal guy/thrash listener fan of the JCM 800 sound that wants to take that to the modern era
Thanks to this video I bought this amp but the 100 watt version. Need to try it with your own guitars before buying it. The versatility in tone is incredible. The amp really adapts to the guitar you are using. It doesn't colour the tone. It's got a tighter attack or reaponse to the other Orange amps. The cleans are sparkley, The classic Orange Crunch is there, and the heavy tones are there too. When you really crank it, it sounds like someone smashing a wall down rather than someone doing a single hit with a sledgehammer if that makes sense. I went for this amp because I wanted an amp that could do it all and not have tons of different nobs or channels. This amp proves you really don't need all of that. Also went for this amp because I wanted a really heavy sound, but something different to a Mesa heavy tone. I like the Mesa tone a lot just wanted something that was heavy, tight response but different. Think this amp is like Orange doing a cross between British Hi gain and USA Hi Gain.
Look at the price, it will cure your envy of the amp. The thing costs $2300, and the 100 watt one costs $2500. That is just as expensive as a marshall Jvm410, and more expensive than a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier. I love orange amps, but this one is just too expensive for me.
I'm wondering if Orange shot themselves in the foot for having the Dual Dark series at a price point over $2,000? I mean, besides pro and studio musicians, who is going to be able to afford this? It does sound very good for hard rock and heavy, heavy, tones!
+Erik Fraunfelter Lol Im neither a pro or a studio musician and I have amps that cost more than 2000$, ever heard of saving up money to buy things you like? This amp is worth every penny.
It's pricey but any amp this quality should be. You can buy amps for less...but here's what they don't do...They don't have the loudness/headroom, they don't have the full on balls to the wall sound the Dual Dark 100/50 has, and they usually don't have a foot-switchable attenuator. I use the attenuator to help with bedroom playing and as my boost. I absolutely love my Dual Dark. I think I'm going to setup a Dual Micro Dark setup into a stereo cabinet. Should be absolutely great and will only cost around $400 for the amps.
Yeah if they released a "dual dark terror" at the same price point as the dual terror but with an FX loop I'd have been all over it. £1500 full-sized amp? Pft, got myself a kemper instead.
The cleans on an Orange amplifier tend to be pretty good overall. Are they as good as the cleans of a Fender amplifier of around the same price? No, they aren't. But, you stick a Chorus in front and a reverb pedal in the loop, and you can get more than usable cleans. I personally would recommend going Mesa, however. Their amplifiers can get better distortion tones IMO, and their cleans are very fender-esque. Plus, you get more features than you will ever need, with up to 3 footswitchable 4-band EQ channels, all of which you can switch the wattage, style of distortion/clean, and can even use a 5-band EQ if you so choose, all in a beast amplifier known as the Mark V, which actually ends up being very similarly priced to this, and you have better cleans to begin with. Oh, and what I mentioned in there about what I love about it is only the start of what it can do. It is almost like a modeling amplifier with its features, but it is definitely pure tube tone goodness. I would highly recommend looking at those. And, if you want something cheaper, the Mark V 25 is about half the price of the orange, but almost exactly the same as the Mark V full, but just with two channels as opposed to three.
seeing as this amp is discontinued, i’d love to see an amp with just the A channel. i have the dark terror which is basically a 15W head with the B channel of this head. it rips but is a bit less versatile and a bit less round than the A channel on the dual dark.
Sounds awesome. I've been interested in orange amps for awhile and it's good to hear some demos of them finally. Just bought an rp 1000 and it has a simulated orange in it but there's nuthin like the real thing.
How is it your guitar can sustain that long (2:20ish) with the noise gate on? Does ISP just do a better job at leaving your guitar with more breathing room?
I own Dual Dark 100 and I find it sounds terrible through my Mesa Boogie OS Rectifier straight cab and the Orange PPC 412 V30's. One of the very best speakers combination was running Celestion K85's/. Eminence Texas Heats in a X pattern in a Krank Krankenstein OS ported front loaded cab.
Absolutely killer amp and great demo! Whats with all the crying about price? The DD is cheaper than a Marshall 1987X, 4100, JVM410, 2203X and the '59 SLP and it shits all over them. Its only $100 more than a Dual Rectifier or Triple Crown and way cheaper than a Friedman BE50 or 100. So STFU about it being too expensive!
Nice sounding amp, tons of gain, I really like the sound of Orange lately, always been a Mesa Boogie guy but I’m considering checking out Orange for a live rig set up? I play metal/rock very much influenced by Machine Head, Disturbed and Deftones. Thank you for doing this video. The drummer I play with is a heavy hitting drummer, definitely need a loud and tight sound to compliment his raging Sonar kit. I’m definitely gonna check out that amplifier head. Thanks again and have a great day.
I have recently seen guitars with only the bridge pickup in, I had a thought of maybe using a bridge pickup in the neck position and have nothing else behind it making it easier to pick, more room to palm mute I presume and not have to cover the pickup with your hand. What would the problems with this be??
It would sound similar to a middle or neck pickup. A lot of a certain pickup's sound comes from where its positioned. Pick up your guitar and just listen to it acoustically - pluck close to the bridge and then close to the fretboard. You should hear a massive difference in tonality.
I'm sold, cop pin a 1x12 mesa rectifier slant 60w cab and a dual dark 50 head. It'll be awhile but i feel like I don't need anything else except that and my other digital rig
Indeed. It's really for the JVM/Recto fan looking for a new flavor. Channel A is glassy/Marshall'y where Channel B is like a fattened red channel on a recto.
I was thinking about getting a Mesa Boogie Mark V 25, but the Dual Dark goes into the direction of that American sound (atleast to my ears) and it's alot cheaper. Is this an amp to play Tremonti style modern hard rock?
Agalloch Fan That's because orange amps are a conspiracy to get people into mastodon, they brainwash you into playing their riffs so that you buy their albums.
Could this amp handle fatter tones like for example: Thy art is murder, Whitechapel, and Gift Giver. Also range to like Bands like: Architects, Fit For a king, Parkway Drive, and etc. please help me out, much appreciate it!
I have a question I hope you will answer.. I don't really have the option to try a 50w vs 100w but the question is: Will a 50w model do the job in a live setting when I'm used to 100w amps? I like to punch, keep a good bottom end and have enough to spare against a drum kit. I've played a 50w rockerverb in store and love it. The price difference is the real issue. I've been a 100w Mesa user for years. Just like to know if it's enough or will I be wishing I grabbed the 100w. Thanks
Mark Johnson I think they're different sounds. For the super 80's metal I'd totally choose the Mesa. But for grungy or sludgey rock I'd go Orange. Of course, I don't really like the sound of this amp personally. But I think it's sound would be good in a mix as a rhythm tone or as one/two tracks of dual/quad tracked guitars if paired with a different amp.
I enjoy the Dual Dark over the Mesa Boogie. I am in a band with a guy who has a Dual Rectifier and they sound great together and honestly pretty similar. I feel like my amp has more bass and mids, and he has the highs. I run a small bit of distortion or overdrive through the front of the amp to tighten up the sound and give me a nice crunch, but I don't need that really. The Mesa has some really cool features though and I want to get the Mini Rectifier 25 Watts because of those features.
im planning on getting the 100w but i was wondering if anyone out there in internet land could answer a question for me. can the 100w get good modern metal (killswitch, all that remains, Chelsea Grin) tones at bedroom freindly volume?
+Gergő Soós I'm also after some Cannibal Corpse tones as well but my main concern is how well it will do at lower volume. I like all forms of heavy music and death metal is definitely one of them
100w amp is overkill in most situations. I highly doubt you can make any 100w amp sound good at bedroom levels. If you haven't gotten your amp yet, I strongly suggest checking out the Engl Ironball, it has a power soak and you can set it at 1w, 5w or 20w. 20w is too much for bedroom, but the 1 or five allows you to put up the lead and drop the master for great modern metal sounds.
Brian Jackson eh, well, this may be subjective but I tried out the EVH 5150 III 100w about 2 months ago and it was absolutely awesome, even at volumes I could easily talk over. with that said, this orange has a built in attenuator so now I'm almost sure it can. I'm well aware it'll probably sound better once it's allowed but speaking as a person who has only owned solid-state amp all of their life, a tube can't sound any worse, right? lol
Great video! Need your help...torn between a mesa roadster or orange dual dark 100. Sold my single rec and wanted something new so I was leaning towards orange, but roadster is very versitile. band plays incubus, deftones, seether, pantera...which would you recommend?
hi dude, very nice videos and tone. can u tell please what pedal u use here? general iam noob at music gear. i have a bugera 333xl head and i want to search what pedals improve the "skills" of the amp. until i have found that EQ - Ns-2- and compressor helps... can u suggest more? (sry for my english) thanks !
Hi, thanks for that demo. You said it cleans up with the guitar volume but I haven't heard too much clean sounds in your video... Would I be able to use that amp with the channel A set for clean and the Channel B for crunch / dirt sounds? I play in a cover band and need clean sounds for a few songs...
50 or 100 watt head? not sure which one is best choice? I know the 100 can do 100/70/50/30 never had an amp that had half power modes tho. Does it affect tone at all?
Have you done any reviews of Engl amps? I have a screamer 50 combo myself and I would love to know what your personal thoughts about them if you have tried them?
great cover! i like heavy metal, metallica, megadeth, maiden, judas, bps and i want to buy an amp. i was thinking about the evh 5150iii 50 watts, the marshall jvm410 or the mesa dual rectifier or maybe this one, what do you think_?
Most orange amps, when driven hard enough, will usually get a bit fuzzy. At least all the one's I've plugged into will (OR series, TH series, mark I and II Rockerverbs, original Terrors).
I played the Dark Terror at my local music store and it was the fuzziest amp I have played. Some people like fuzz, but personally I think it sounds bad. Still a great, well-built amp that does what it does very well
A lot of high gain amps loose low-end definition with the gain really cranked, hence why a lot of people like to keep the gain low, and then boost with an overdrive of some sort
Thanks Ryan - I enjoy your reviews. How would you compare the voicing on channel A of the Dual Dark to the OR100? Specifically, would you say the DD can do 70s metal/hard rock tones as well as the OR does?
brutal. loved it. I have the same G&L. great axe.
Nice!
***** LOL you have everything!
Bought this amp a few days back. One of the few left to buy new in NZ. Awesome sound, so massive. My last amp, a Blackstar HT5 sounds weak in comparison. Sounds epic, really considering investing in an Orange.
4:11 perfect setting..more mids, tight lows, and no harsh treble. Same as my loved Dark Terror. At least, in a mix.
Personally it sounded a bit too muddy but that could easily be fixed
Not a big Orange fan, but I like this amp's gain! Reminds me of a tighter High on Fire-ish tone.
I think it was only fizzy on a couple of tone shape settings. I stinking love it. Orange tone, man.
this mix sounds nice
loved all the demos I saw of this amp from NAMM, sounds FANTASTIC.
really liked channel A.
Finally, someone did a proper demo and actually did the amp some justice. Sounds great, Fluff!
Amp and pup combo sound killer. Lots of crunch and bite, but it's still warm with a lot of individual note clarity. I dig it.
I have the 100, I love it everytime I play. Very sick amp
the sig pickup is meaty gotta love it. the amp is great as well
Wait, lemme listen to that again... Orange double D rocks!
what I like about Orange is the clarity the hiss is loud more if you listen attentively you hear the whole cool chord
Thanks to this video I bought this amp but the 100 watt version. Need to try it with your own guitars before buying it. The versatility in tone is incredible. Complimenti per quasta demo..... Finalmente hai dato giustizia a questo gioiellino!!!
I REALLY want this amp now, Good job fluff!!! Love your videos

Holy ballz... that thing is nuts!

+Erik Fraunfelter this surprises me. I would like a lot more a rockerverb or an AD30, both costing a lot less

Alex Wright
What Mesa has more gain then the Orange Dual Dark 50?
khazz01 What Mesa needs more gain?
Alex Wright
I don't know. Seems everyone and their grandma throws an o.d. in front of it to get some more juice out of it.
khazz01 That isn't for more gain, it is for a different gain structure, with less low-frequency gain, which makes it tighter and more aggressive.
this has to be my favorite riff that fluff wrote
Like the sound. Price point seem to be wrong. Maybe they will revaluate that if sales don't go well. Great video Fluff. Thanks.
Thanks for the demo, this amp seems really cool. I haven't liked most of their heads in the past but this sounded awesome!
Weird to hear such early version of "Oh, Gravity" :)
seeing as this amp is discontinued, i’d love to see an amp with just the A channel. i have the dark terror which is basically a 15W head with the B channel of this head. it rips but is a bit less versatile and a bit less round than the A channel on the dual dark.
Great review, my favorite that I've seen of this amp.
Rocking the Cantrell G&L!!!!
OH HELLZ YES! AMAZING TONE BRO! This amp is everything I want and a bag o chips!
Damn!! So much early Linkin Park vibes in that intro song!!! Loved it.
Sounds awesome. I've been interested in orange amps for awhile and it's good to hear some demos of them finally. Just bought an rp 1000 and it has a simulated orange in it but there's nuthin like the real thing.

***** absolutely.a must have. who wants a bunch of static? jack white pulls it off yes,but for metal,or shredding it's a must.
Had no idea Orange was doing this, nice.
Great demo. Thanks!
Damn, brutal tone. Really diggin' it.
Wow great tones man, orange hit it big w this one. Nice tunes as well but you always write cool groovy hooks!
That's awesome! Great vid. I just got a little cr20 practice amp and I love it. Best solid state amp ive ever owned.
Absolutely killer amp and great demo! Whats with all the crying about price? The DD is cheaper than a Marshall 1987X, 4100, JVM410, 2203X and the '59 SLP and it shits all over them. You have some of the best UA-cam review skills ever. Great work!
That perfect modern Brit metal sound always loved orange
Wish I could find one
Been dying to hear this amp, thanks for sharing it dude...may have to pick one up ...
Awesome amp great review
i came here for the amp demo but i enjoyed your music more :D
Love your riffs man!
That kicks major metal a$$!!! This will be my next amp for sure!
Solid playing man, great tone to!
Amazing man.... great demo.... keep up with the good work...
Holy shit that tone was intense!!!
6 years later. How does it feel?
Nice sounding amp, tons of gain, I really like the sound of Orange lately, always been a Mesa Boogie guy but I’m considering checking out Orange for a live rig set up? Hey Ryan, Dual Dark or OR100?
Kinda new at the guitar thing... Was and still is trying to find the headphone slot on the head of the duel dark 50 ._. Need helpppp!!! Please.
It's because there isn't one bud. Checked the specs on a bunch of websites. Sorry to bring the bad news.
i don't want to sound stupid, but just alittle curious on how you got this head early? thanks :) just like orange soda, its got that nice fizz
Rippin brother !
can the dual dark get sludgy and low like the rocker verb does? I am very tone sensitive and cant handle higher frequencies enjoyably.
What is that thing on the headstock of his guitar? Does anyone know? Ive never seen that before
I have recently seen guitars with only the bridge pickup in, I had a thought of maybe using a bridge pickup in the neck position and have nothing else behind it making it easier to pick, more room to palm mute I presume and not have to cover the pickup with your hand. What would the problems with this be??

I STILL hear "Wristbeards and gear" in the beginning!!
love the new video editing :D
$2000 :'(
Just get the dark and the micro separate lol and pair em
I'm considering this amp and the Randall Satan for about $500 less. Or Mesa Mini Rec. thoughts?
I'm sold, cop pin a 1x12 mesa rectifier slant 60w cab and a dual dark 50 head. It'll be awhile but i feel like I don't need anything else except that and my other digital rig
Holy shit!! Real deal.
Fizzy as hell.
Indeed. It's really for the JVM/Recto fan looking for a new flavor. Channel A is glassy/Marshall'y where Channel B is like a fattened red channel on a recto.
What are the woods on that guitar? Alder, maple and ebony combination maybe?
I was thinking about getting a Mesa Boogie Mark V 25, but the Dual Dark goes into the direction of that American sound (atleast to my ears) and it's alot cheaper. Is this an amp to play Tremonti style modern hard rock?
Dear god this tone is delicious.
Can i get the tab of intro some way?
How did you get one????? How much are they going for?
Love it !
Do you think this would work well with 7/8 strings?
Why run the decimator through the front, surely you want it in the effects loop?
Why is it every fucking time I see an Orange video the tone always sounds like Mastodon?
+Agalloch Fan because they used to use them lol... they still use the cabs (half orange and half friedman for one of them, I can't remember which...)
Because orange are awesome and so are mastodon
Harry Emmott I know, but it's like in every Orange video, it always sounds like Mastodon and plays riffs that sounds like Mastodon.
Agalloch Fan That's because orange amps are a conspiracy to get people into mastodon, they brainwash you into playing their riffs so that you buy their albums.
mastodon haven't had a good album in ten years. crack the skye and the hunter or whatever the hell that album was called made me give up on them
Dang your original sound stuff is tight!!
What would you say is better, this or the or100?
bonus points for the G&L
Cool man! First review... U da man!!!
whats that second string tree black bar on the headstock?
Thanks for responding. Just found your about it. Great dual terror vid by the way!
Perfect demo....Precise minimal comments.
Could this amp handle fatter tones like for example: Thy art is murder, Whitechapel, and Gift Giver. Also range to like Bands like: Architects, Fit For a king, Parkway Drive, and etc. please help me out, much appreciate it!
Everyone talks about 6l6 and El 34 but Marshall and orange use neither. What are they? 83's
I have a question I hope you will answer..
I don't really have the option to try a 50w vs 100w but the question is:
Will a 50w model do the job in a live setting when I'm used to 100w amps?
I like to punch, keep a good bottom end and have enough to spare against a drum kit. I've played a 50w rockerverb in store and love it. The price difference is the real issue.
I've been a 100w Mesa user for years. Just like to know if it's enough or will I be wishing I grabbed the 100w.
Thanks
Question in comparison would you rather have a dual dark or dual rectifier Mesa-boogie?
Mark Johnson I think they're different sounds. For the super 80's metal I'd totally choose the Mesa. But for grungy or sludgey rock I'd go Orange. Of course, I don't really like the sound of this amp personally. Hi Fluff ! How do you compare DD to rockerverb mkiii ?
i got both and dual dark got way more gain. My rockerverb is good with that reverb and got pretty good gain. It's different.
I can’t decide either...I heard him mk 3 was his favorite....
Its darker 😂
Hello
Could you tell me the différence between the Mototone vadar and this Dual dark.
These amps sounds good to me.
Thx
You should do a review of the Rockerverb
great cover! i like heavy metal, metallica, megadeth, maiden, judas, bps and i want to buy an amp. i was thinking about the evh 5150iii 50 watts, the marshall jvm410 or the mesa dual rectifier or maybe this one, what do you think_?
So the question I’m wondering
Mk3 or dual dark 50???
I can’t decide !!!
That amp to me sounds like there's a fuzz pedal there.
+Nunuv yorbiznes I think channel B has that fuzz. sounds better than fizz
Well at first it sounds like fuzz, but if you tried actuall fuzz, you should know that fuzz pedal is absolutely unusable when palm mutting.
is it really that fuzzy?
Most orange amps, when driven hard enough, will usually get a bit fuzzy. At least all the one's I've plugged into will (OR series, TH series, mark I and II Rockerverbs, original Terrors).
Patrick Byington oh man, I don't like a lot of fuzzy. I like clarity. im sure the amp is diverse though
I played the Dark Terror at my local music store and it was the fuzziest amp I have played. Some people like fuzz, but personally I think it sounds bad. Still a great, well-built amp that does what it does very well
***** That happens when you get the gain all the way past 2 o' clock. But for metal you'll do just fine with the gain at 1:30 max.
