Bro, before you return the amp, crank the volume on the B channel almost to the max and use the attenuator as your volume control. This way you can get by with far less gain but sound much more aggressive. I've had my Dual Dark for about 6 years and I'm still in love with it today. I owned one and still regret selling it. It was the first tube amp to get that chug of death sound without a pedal in front, and I never did use one. It’s amazing to scoop the mids and get an even more powerful roar. A rarity in most tube amps, and I’ve owned Dual Recs, Marshall Kerry Kings, VHT Pitbull Ultra Leads and 6505+ amps. And the bottom end? I never had an issue, but I also used a Marshall 1960 cab. It does have a certain sound that might not match your needs, especially if you love the 6505+ or VH140C, which I own the Ampeg. But it does brutality in a different but good way, and everyone should experience it at least once.
is the VH140c worth 2 grand? i’m fiending for one but they’ve gotten stupidly expensive, yet i’m not sure if there’s anything quite like it. also hear the power amps fail often and are basically irreparable agree that, which makes it even less logical to blow 2 racks
@@no.mids.brando I found one for $1200, and it’s worth a chance on a good one, but only if you can risk it if you have disposable income. If you really want that ultimate death chug, look for a VH150 for well under a grand. They’re extremely rare, but a lot cheaper. I can’t say to the power amp failures, but mine is still brutally loud and happy to be so. I can say that it’s truly a one of a kind amp that is perfect for getting the ultimate metal sound without any extra pedals, especially when scooping the mids.
Today I was lucky enough to try the new white 100watt version. Its frightening 😮 It felt smooth, bloomy and dynamic on channel A, and tight, heavy and saggy at the same time on channel B. Amazing amp with the onboard attenuator. Edit: I used a Maxon od808 overdrive, its amazing with Orange amps
I sold my Dual Dark 50 back in 2019 to get a Rockerverb. It's an amp that kind of fills a niche that doesn't really exist, imo. Like, there are better amps in that price range that can do metal better than the Dual Dark can, and the lack of useable clean tones make it kind of useless for a versatile modern rock amp like the Rockerverb. It's a great amp but there's just too many trade offs in either direction for me to justify owning one.
I have this exact amp. Boosted with a Rat style pedal(or just a Rat) on channel A, it is so good. Channel B is too bassy with a Rat style pedal. But with a normal boost cutting the low end, it is also really great and does it's own thing. I also have a Rockerverb 50 MKII with KT88's, really amazing amp. It seems to do almost everything very well. It was fine with EL34s though, I was just curious. And I have a have a Thunderverb 50 with the normal EL34's. It is really great for leads. Especially the reverb. The Rockerverb reverb is just quite odd honestly. But the Thunderverb reverb circuit seems completely different.
Hardwood floors and canines, amirite? Thanks. I love your channel and appreciate your input. Personally, I'm looking at getting a Synergy SYN-1 after September ends (Halestorm and P!nk concerts to worry about before then) and want honest amp opinions for potential power amp use later on when I can stop using the Joyo Jackman II for my Synergy power amp section. May not be ideal, but it's what I can work with.
"Dad rock" tones are a great starting point for throwing distortion pedals in front of the amp on low or medium gain and the output cranked as a boost. This especially works well for really nasty, modern pedals, like TC Fangs/Eyemaster, the stuff from brands like Driftwood, Lichtlaerm, and This Heavy Earth, etc. Throwing a Northern Mauler on low gain, with the output cranked, in front of an amp with that kind of tone, or a Medusa, will change your life. Even something as quaint as a Boss ML-2 can be used that way.
Halfway through I thought this was going to be a negative review of my favorite amp that I’ve ever owned. Until you went active and then C (I’m both). That’s when what I try to do came out. And you confirmed why I’ve kept the Dual Dark for so long.
Btw my distortion and gain almost entirely comes before the input, from pedals. Attenuator and volume high as heck and then extremely carefully opening the gain between 0 and 1 like I’m doing brain surgery.
I bought an Orange Dual Dark 100 for $2,300 in 2016 (a good price for a high gain amp at that time) and have played it through the Orange PPC 212 cabinet that I bought then, and it sounds great with that cab.

Orange amps are notorious for the fact some of them can get a better clean tone out of their distortion channels than their actual clean channels. I have a friend with a micro dark, and another with a dark terror 15, and I have a Super Crush. I only ever use the clean channel as a pedal platform. The dirt channel on the neck pickup with the volume rolled back a bit sounds so glassy and sparkly and like fucking indie pop or a periphery ballad lmao... and you can get the gain in just the right spot to get that sound, and then have crushing metal distortion by engaging an overdrive with the gain at 9 o'clock or so.
For the price, the Uberschall Ultra is a no brainer over the DD-100. Didn’t hear a single tone this amp can do that the Ultra can’t, plus the Ultra has waaaay more options out of the box, especially for extended range players. I've a Dual Dark and it benefits alot from a MXR 10 band EQ pedal in the FX Loop to bump up the mids and highs to help it cut through more. An EQ in the loop of any amp with an FX Loop is going to make it alot more versatile tonally anyway.
@@itnefer4787 I really do think it’s just lacking in cutting frequencies. The most egregious example is the band using a Rockerverb mk1 and a dual dark 100 together. But the rockerverb just BURIES the DD and it’s not even funny. Me and my friend were both absolutely baffled. Seen the band many times. They are a sort of doom/heavy metal band.
