Neehar, an Indian-American living in the US, has struggled with teasing and isolation for her hairlessness since she was a child. Alopecia areata is a condition that often causes massive hair loss. Neehar's parents first discovered her condition when she was six months old. The family, who were living in India at the time, sought several treatments, but they realized that the condition could not be completely cured. However, given the importance people place on hair in Indian culture and perhaps fearing the negative effects their child would face from society, her parents decided to leave India and immigrate to the US on the advice of their doctors, Nihar herself said in an interview with A Millennial Mind Podcast.
