I have been subscribed to and following your videos for a while. I really struggle to get that lose line look. Even though I struggle to draw a straight line, I find that I cannot just let myself go and draw this lose. It is quite frustrating 🤣 I am just up the road from you in Peterborough but as yet, not visited your hometown. Thanks for the work in doing these videos and showing what is possible if only I could get over my irrational fear of deliberately drawing lose wobbly lines😊🙏
You could try drawing with your non-dominant hand. Or try one line drawing. Or looking at your reference photo, and not looking down at your drawing. Or a combination of all three. Good luck.
I was just like you but I am now finding drawing a loose line easy. Having said that it did involve me having a stroke so this may not appeal to you as a way forward. In which case Drew's advice may be more appealing.
Hi Graham - thanks for the comment, and great to hear from somewhere pretty local! Thanks very much, also, for the Kofi - gratefully received. For me, doing little timed sketches is my favourite way of loosening up. Also, purposefully making mistakes, of messing with the perspective (e.g. using wonky vertical lines - great little dicscussion below here too with lots of different ideas!
Wow. When I think it's kinda finished, you manage to still add this final touch that makes it even more amazing. Fabulous. Thanks so much for sharing your process (though I realise more and more that it's your EYE that I'd need to start with...!).
Hi Toby, I have just discovered your channel. As a 'beginner' (2 years in!) your style and tutorials are just what I needed to help me break away from detail and 'colouring in'. My old mill town has some fantastic buildings but all of my inspirational reference photos have been stuck in a file until I 'get better' at drawing and painting. That changed yesterday when I discovered your work! Thank you so much! I'm hooked! Creative neural pathways are firing on all cylinders now, this is just the boost I needed:)
Just discovered your videos. I live near a very remote village here in New Zealand. As you would be aware we don’t have the beautiful historic buildings one finds in the UK and Europe. However what we have are some of NZ’s oldest colonial buildings and they are beautiful. Many are built in a lovely regency/gothic style. Even though our region’s population is less than 70,000 we are a very popular tourist destination and our local artist community do very well during our summer months. No one here does street art and l have been practicing, however having worked as a fine line illustrator in a previous life, my work is too controlled. I need to loosen up so l can draw as beautifully and as freely as you do. I have watched videos by several artists and your presentation is really good. Thank you for your inspiration - l will definitely like and subscribe
oh goodness, as a new avid follower, I can see how your style has changed so much compared to today's sketches. Really interesting, and inspiring thank you.
I’m learning so much from your channel, especially in how to loosen up. ❤Thanks. So interesting the way you change the perspective and only make approximations of what is in the photo. This seems to bring depth to your painting 🤔 I was interested also in the frame you drew at the end… I liked that.
Mordor? Them houses look a bit big for the shires. Also I know it has been sometime since I read Lord Of The Rings but I am pretty sure there was no mentions of Gandalf riding his bike. And I don't think Bilbo would have been too happy sitting in the child seat behind Gandalf. I am still of the opinion that leaving the picture unframed is a better way to go. Without the frame you are left with the feeling that there is more out there. Thanks, Toby.
Haha, yes indeed - it's amazing where my mind goes sometimes as I'm bobbling along in my chatter. Sometimes I agree, sometimes I like the idea of a window given a peak into another world....
I love your videos. Thank you.
Glad you like them!
Nice style
Thanks 🙏
Wonderful!
Thank you! Cheers!
beautiful. You do have such a special way to sketch and I love it. Because of you, I started a sketchbook. Thanks
That's great to hear - thank you!

Awe thanks! Such kind words ☺️
I agree - except that you cannot start with someone else’s eye. Your originality can ONLY come from being the authentic YOU!
Wow that is so informative and relaxing too
Glad you think so!
Great video thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
I like this one very much. Colors and boldness. I'm going to try it 👐🏼
Please do!
I enjoyed that, thank you
I'm glad!
Thank you for another beautiful sketch ☺️. Can you advise me on how to get the angles on doors and windows. Mine sit at a weird angle!
Check my urban sketch guide 😉

Thank you very much for the complements. I love your country, I had a dream to live there for a bit. Maybe one day!
I really like the way you framed this.
Thanks Christine :)

That frame was great, so original.
Beautiful. Thank you for sharing. Love the edge at the end. Very neat. ❤
Thank you so much!
Oh, BTW, is this hot press paper you use? 100% coton? Thanks!
This is lightly cold pressed - an no not 100% cotton. I save that for 'real watercolours' as these loose washes don't need super heavy paper :)
I like frame thing, thanks..
No problem!
What kind of pens do you use?
Hi, mostly I use a LAMY safari, sometimes a range of other fineliners - my favourite pens are up here -- www.urbansketch.co.uk/supplies-1
