  • Klonopin belongs in the family of the benzodiazepines which includes the related Xanax, Valium / diazepam and Ativan / lorazepam. Klonopin acts as a sedative / hypnotic, anti-convulsant, muscle relaxant and relieves anxiety. Although FDA approved in 1975, Klonopin remains among the 50 most frequently used medicines with more than 18 million prescriptions each year.
While Klonopin improves partial seizures either alone or in addition to other therapy, it often loses its anti-seizure effects within several months. Boosting the dose may regain control.
Klonopin finds most use as a treatment for panic attacks. This disorder affects nearly 3% of adults while remaining undiagnosed in as many as 40% of those suffering from the often disabling symptoms. Although Klonopin reduces the frequency of attacks, it rarely eliminates them.
Off-label use of Klonopin remains extensive as treatment for anxiety, mania, social anxiety disorder, insomnia and fibromyalgia. Monthly cost varies between about $10-$45.

This is the only main tangible issue I have. Don't know if it is because of stress or clonazepam (I think it is stress tbh, as my dose of clonazepam was minimal.. ). My APRN prescribed this for me to bridge the gap while my SSRI increase kicks in, and its been a miracle. It's very much helped me break that vicious anxiety loop and helped me feel a lot more normal. I've only taken it a couple times, and even with it clearly worn off, I feel a lot more stable. The ear ringing isn't frightening me as much, and I feel much more hopeful about getting better. Dont plan on being on it long, but for the short time I have, it's been a godsend.

I've taken this drug for panic attacks and anxiety EVERY NIGHT for over 12 years now and only had to increase my dosage from a half a milligram a night to 1 milligram a night. Before this I dropped out of college from being panic stricken while giving presentations or just from the 1st day of class where you had to introduce yourself. It got so bad i had trouble getting haircuts or even doing activities with my family. It builds up in your system over time to help anxiety, panic disorder, social anxiety, etc. It’s also great for my muscle spasms and muscle pain. It’s not nearly anywhere as addictive as other benzodiazepines. I stopped taking it for 2 weeks and had no withdrawal symptoms. I have been prescribed Klonopin for about 6 months now. I wouldn't let them put me on an SSRI because I have family members who had suicide attempts while on those drugs. I have found that if I take one before the anxiety comes that it doesn't come near as heavy nor does it stay as long. They're becoming fewer and further between with each passing month. I spent 10 years in a a dead-set against taking Klonopin because of the recovery relapse aspect of it. All I can say about that is I could have saved myself a lot of trouble had I listened to the doctor over the people at the AA meeting

And my response to that is "Why in the h*** am I going to stop taking the only medicine that has helped me with my anxiety for the last 17 years?" All this B.S. started around 2012 and 2013 because of the "Opioid Epidemic" Just because opioid addicts started mixing benzos with their pain pills and overdosed does not mean the rest of us responsible people have to pay for their mistakes.

Honestly the side effects of this medication and other Benzo's seem a lot less than even SSRI's. I think the main problem with these medications is the addiction and especially substance abuse.. But what about those people who don't abuse it or use it sparingly.. There are some people who take a low dose for decades and it works for them. Someone wrote an article once that if used properly and for people with real anxiety/panic disorder who aren't substance abusers, the benzo's work the best with the least side effects.. I wonder if the doctor would comment on this.

I have been on klonopin for 5 years and am on week 2 off of it. It took a year-long taper, and is different from SSRI's. The withdrawal is mental and very physical in nature with this drug. Having a CNS that is rebounding off benzo use is scary and life-threatening. I also take Remeron which is an antidepressant and when I lower the dose it is just as extreme in a different way. I agree with you and used sparingly they are the best and have no unpleasant side effects really. I may incorporate benzos later but never taken every day in abundance ever again as prescribed.

The fact is that benzos are short term tools and should never be taken for more than 3 weeks. And im not even saying this because of dependance nor abuse, but for the fact that long term use of benzos will only worsen the anxiety of the patient. I think anxiety is mainly du to environmental factors and the best way to deal with it is through personnal support like family and friends, through professional help like psychiatrist and ultimutaly through a complete change of the problematic environment, even if its mean resigning from a job or ending a relentionship. Because if you only face a problematic situation by taking benzos and not adressing the core issues, it will only get back to you in a much stronger way because of the addition of the disrupted natural functioning of the GABA system by these benzos.

    Panic Attacks and Anxiety -
    Paxil 4
    Klonopin 9
Ive been taking Klonopin at the same dose for 10 years and took Paxil in both CR and IR for 8 years before starting Klonopin. These two drugs shouldn't even be labeled in the same category. Everyone knows that panic and anxiety is controlled by Gaba in which benzos increase the amount of, Paxil and SSRIs are don't touch GABA but rather increases Serotonin. I have 1 side effect with Klonopin which is mild constipation. On Paxil I had increased anxiety, night sweats, weight gain, more nervousness as well as others. Klonopin works and kicks in within 30 minutes and Paxil takes 3 weeks. These should not even be compared. Thanks for the helpful history anyway DR

I must be one of the lucky ones, as I've been taking Klonopin for three years now, 0.5mg x2 per day. That's two tablets. Most days I try to take a little less than that. But I haven't felt a need for a stronger dose and only occasionally for more frequent. When this guy said 8-12 mg per day that shocked me. I couldn't stay awake at that dose. The first time I was put on that drug many years ago, the Psychiatrist put me on 1mg x 3 per day. So 3 times what I'm on now. I lowered myself to only 0.5mg in the first dose because it was making me tired and I had trouble at work. I actually got lectured for that, and had to *convince her to LOWER the dose*. That was in 1998 when benzos were still "all the rage" among doctors. As for recreational use, I just don't see how that's possible. I take it to feel normal, not "high".

Find a doctor that you can pay for directly . They accept cash and maybe your insurance will cover the cost of the meds.. I know that works for more people than it doesn't cuz a lot of people do that with suboxone they can't find a doctor who prescribe it but it will be covered under their insurance but meanwhile they have to pay out of pocket for the doctor but if you're anxiety is real bad it might be a better choice than suffering I know that's a lousy feeling I wish you luck..

The worst part about it is you need it once you're on it. The rebound anxiety you can get is fucked. Feels like your brain is in fight or flight mode for no reason. That said there's nothing like it for social anxiety. Benzos just have this effect in anxious people that the feeling of not being so anxious is its own euphoria. Now you need it to sleep or feel normal. Luckily it's long lasting but valium I think is better for that. I'm rambling but great video
