We speak it so often, but i don't know that much because my family doesn't teach me to speak it! For my own self, I'm influenced in Khmer and English, but i speak Toechew and Japanese, a little Mandarin and Cantonese. I'm planing to study French in Phnom Penh soon! But now i wanna focus on Teochew first!
So many people speak Teochew in Southeast Asia. Despite the fact that they been living there for ages, they almost perfectly speak the dialect, the accent is barely changed and I was so surprised.
Edward Lin There are lots and lots of Teochew in Cambodia. It's the biggest group among ethnic Han Chinese, I guess around 70% of them are Teochew. Hence Teochew dialect, culture & cuisine are still pretty strong there. They even injected their words into Cambodian language. Lots of them moved to Cambodia during the mid 1800s & early 1900s when Cambodia were still under Colonial French. French language were compulsory at school during that time. Many Teochew went to Cambodia with just pants & T-shirt but later on dominated the whole Cambodian economy even politic. The mid 1900s was the golden era for Cambodia, it was considered to be the best in Southeast Asia, but unfortunately the Khmer Rouge regime under the leadership of Pol Pot brought the country down to zero from 1975-1979, they killed the rich that live in the city, businessman or businesswoman, the intellectual, the doctor, the professor, university student, etc......, even the one that wear glasses. Lots of Cambodian were tortured & killed, died from disease & starvation. Totally around 2 million lost their lives. Many Teochew were killed, got their assets confiscated. From rich to poor, many Teochew got fed up with the country, fled to France, Belgium, Switzerland, America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand etc...etc. Luckily, now the Teochew community in Cambodia is flourishing again & still plenty of them there doing pretty well.
They tend to blend teochew with fokinese which make it sound a bit hilarious to the teochew born teochew ppl but still its pretty amazing to hear ppl speak the language after living in anogher country for generations
There are language systems. Dialects dont become languages just because you think it "should" be separate languages. Dialects are branches of the "language". Mandarin is a dialect of the "Guan" Language. Cantonese is a dialect of the "Yue" Language. Teochew is a dialect of the "Min" Language.
Teochew is a kind of old language.It can be traced back to the shang dynasty.This may be the reason why many Toechew people enjoy commercial activity.By the way ,Teochew opera is very worth admiring.
Watching this video brings back memories of my grandma. She used to be my main caretaker when I was little and would always talk to herself as she walked around. Sadly I never really picked up Teochew from her.

I’m Teochew from Singapore who migrated to Australia for more than 60 years. So as not to forget my dialect (Teochew), I often speak to myself in Teochew. I think the white guy speaks mandarin quite well. I am teo chew from Batam. Riau Islands and West Kalimantan is the most "teo chew nang" in Indonesia i think, In surabaya as well. I am teo chew and I am proud of it :)

My mom's side lives in Paris and when I go to the chinatown there, everyone speaks teochew. I was mind blown cuz everyone in America speaks mandarin or cantonese in Chinatown.

I'm Teochew nang from Thailand.Since I was young ,I often heard my mom speak Teochew to other people such as my relatives, but she never spoke and taught me (she always spoke thai with me). And that why my teochew is not so good but I am very happy to watch this video caused it recalled me the day when I was young (I am now 60 and gonna retired from my work.Nowadays in Thailand it is very hard to find some one who can speak Teochew fluently because those people who could speak fluently mostly passed away.

Met a teochew speaking shop attendance in Lafayette Nice, he was from Cambodia. It's always such a delight to meet another Teochew esp in a country so far away. Btw Felix's accent is 80% similar to Indonesian Teochew.
In Cambodia, there's a lot of people speaking Teochew, but nowadays we almost lost it, but i will try to protect it as my ancestors did! Come here in kampot, theres much more yiu would ever know!
My grandpa from my dad said is Chaoshan and immigrate to Cambodia. So does my eldest aunt. My dad does not speak and carry the culture aspect , hence it does not pass down to me. I hope to learn more about Choshan culture

I am Indonesian Teochew lives in Ketapang, Kalimantan Barat (West Borneo). I learned Teochew since childhood and most of Teochew people here speak Teochew fluently. My grandpa came from Jieyang, China. Welcome to my hometown, Ketapang. :)
My dad and entire family from his side are tieuchiew and I spoke it as a kid (Like until ~6-7yrs old, I’m 13 now) but lost it now and teochew lessons are impossible to find 😩(my dad works a lot so it’s kinda hard)
Yeah even videos from China that are in the dialect are very rare, most of what you find are those teochew opera which does not help with learning conversational teochew, in fact you need to be extremely fluent to understand it.
We speak Teochew in Indonesia, but we usually mixed up with Indonesia words inside the sentence because, young generations sometimes didn't know about some word in Teochew because we are not often using it as a word .

Yes, le jia ba buay is means :- have you had your meal (您吃飽了嗎)？It's commonly used in Singapore and Malaysia Teochew community. Nevertheless le jia png buay means : have you eaten rice, this sentence is normally used within the family members within the house, very seldom use outside the family.

The last sentence I read it as "have you eaten yet?" or something along the lines of have you been fully fed yet. Usually when I ask I just say "tje bwe?" as in "did you eat yet?". I usually use the shortened version or "[insert family member] tje bwe?" but would it be considered as rude if I did that? Just wondering =).
That's use when you're with family or friends. I would use the longer one when I'm talking to my mom's friend or my friend's mom. There are different types of formalities in every language.

That is true. Teochew preserved the 7 tonal pronunciation of the ancient China. While mandarin only have 4 tonal pronunciation. Im teochew nang from Indonesia. Salam bro

Kang Ari It will depend on where your parents are from/what languages they speak and how they thought you because that will change it. Like for me we say joisia is thank you and also some things he said is different from what I say. So it really vary

The mandarin word “ma” 嗎， not exist in Techew language. Hence the first “ma” / “bo” is mandarin “wu” 無 and second “ma” / “bweuj” is mandarin “ bu hui” 不會, the last “ma” / “bwe” is mandarin “ wei “ 未 ！

Well, I m from Penang, Malaysia, I speak Hokkien, TeoChew, Cantonese and Mandarin. It's pretty tricky to convert the accent sometimes..
Hokkien and TeoChew are very similar but they dont sound anything alike i am TeoChew and Hakka so yeah just saying

That is true. Teochew preserved the 7 tonal pronunciation of the ancient China. While mandarin only have 4 tonal pronunciation.

scissors = gar doh, plastic bag = zua doh (It literally means paper bag, it is a common term used for carrier bag before plastic bag replaced paper bag, but the same term are still used for plastic bag or carrier bag made of paper or cardboard.) Actual bag would be call bik.

There is no Chaosan dialect. The Teochew dialect in Mandarin is Chaojou.

I'm not Chinese, but I have many Teochew-Chinese friend in my city Pontianak. I heard they pronounced 我 (I) is 'Wa', not 'Wo and 'thank you' is 'Kamsia' (感谢). Someone can explain why?
Kang Ari It will depend on where your parents are from/what languages they speak and how they thought you because that will change it. Like for me we say joisia is thank you and also some things he said is different from what I say. So it really vary

I think it should be "Le Ho Me (May)" rather than "Le Ho Bo" and "Le si tigo gai nang" can be shortened to "Le si tigo nang" or even "Le tigo nang"
nah, mine is also le ho bue, same as his, i think it's a bit different depending on where ur from
@@ubermenschzarathustra862 maybe. But Me is a question particle, like Ma in mandarin. Bue is a negative adverb meaning not yet, while Bo means do not have.
From my own experience, Teochew pronunciation is not as difficult as Mandarin! I might be wrong but after 4 years of self learning, I get used to it.

The mandarin word “ma” 嗎， not exist in Techew language. Hence the first “ma” / “bo” is mandarin “wu” 無
and second “ma” / “bweuj” is mandarin “ bu hui” 不會, the last “ma” / “bwe” is mandarin “ wei “ 未 ！
