    I think the Walker bros should give the 2003 Peter Pan a second chance. I really think it's criminally underrated and never got the kind of attention it deserved. Even though I grew up on both Hook and the original Disney cartoon, I consider the 2003 one with Jason Isaacs to be the definitive Peter Pan movie.

    • @marvinschannel5391

      Peter Pan (2003) is so underrated I think because it came out the wrong time it was at the time like Lord of the rings and Harry Potter were destroying the box office Hook is my favourite Peter Pan film I really liked the Disney version I haven't seen Pan but it looks bad.

      The 2003 Peter Pan is definitely the most accurate retelling of the original Play/Book by Barrie. I'd love to see their opinion of the 03 movie in a full review.

    • @persgodiva
      @persgodiva 8 років тому +7

      The soundtrack alone, I mean ...
      The 2003 version is the most faithful adaptation by far (even if not completely faithful either) and I personally LOVED the visual style of it and the undertones of Pan being threatening in some scenes. Very good interpretation of who and what Peter Pan truely is. I think JMB would have liked it.

    • @willlyon7129
      @willlyon7129 5 років тому +2

      I totally agree, the 2003 version of Peter Pan is the best representation of the story ever made. It also improves on the misogyny and the racism in the book, and makes Wendy a modern day heroine.

  • @LilyGrace95
    @LilyGrace95 9 років тому +35

    The 2003 version is amazing for portraying an accurate Peter Pan. Admittedly they aged him up to further the crush between him and Wendy, but they do everything else really well if you know the source material; he doesn't think about the consequences of his actions, he thinks life is a game, and he forgets (the two best examples being when he takes credit for the shadow and when he forgets about John and Michael about 3 times in the space of 10 minutes). Most versions I've seen, Hook included, just show him as the lovable, playful boy, but none of them really explore the side you see in the book where he lead the Darlings around the world for months because he thinks it's funny to watch them fail to keep up, or the fact he kills off some of the Lost Boys cos they're getting too old. The darker side of him, though still not fully explored, is portrayed really well in the 2003 version I think. (Jason Isaacs also plays an amazing Cpt. Hook - the only one who plays him better is Dustin Hoffman :D )

    I really think the 2003 film IS the definitive Peter Pan movie, more so than the Disney film because it balanced the sense of wonder and the darker aspects of the Barrie book. I would even call it a vastly underrated film!

    9:00 -- Peter Pan in the original novel still had all his milk teeth, so he certainly wasn't supposed to be a teenager by any stretch. Physically he was actually supposed to be extremely young, around 7-10 years old.
    But he is pretty creepy in the classical fairy kind of way; like the fact that the Lost Boys actually do age in the original novel, and Peter murders them when they become too old. It's mentioned in the passing so nonchalantly that you could almost miss it, but stuff like that can remind you that he was originally supposed to be the villain of the novel.

    • @Lightice1
      @Lightice1 9 років тому +5

      *****
      Well, I feel that at this point Pan as a villain would just feel like one of those cheesy Darker & Edgier remakes that we keep getting. In the original concept he was supposed to be the villain, kidnapping children to the Neverland, but then Captain Hook was conceived, and the rest is history. Once Upon A Time did a version where Pan was the villain and Hook the hero, but I personally found it rather bland.
      Still, it would be nice for the adaptations to do justice to Peter's darker side that's still present in the original novel as it came to be.

      Lightice1 "The Lost Boys actually do age in the original novel, and Peter murders them when they become too old."
      Wow. Why hasn't THAT been put into a film version? I could almost see that as a spin-off movie, a grownup Lost Boy finds his way back to our world and tries to warn the kids who want to go to Neverland that it's not all it's cracked up to be. And meanwhile Peter Pan is trying to find him and kill him.
      It could actually be a great commentary on what fairytales used to be and what they are now. Everyone imagines fairies as happy-go-lucky thanks to Disney, but they could be really dark in the original stories. Even the notion of going off to Neverland is kinda creepy if you think about it long enough. It goes against everything most kids would want. You'd be taken away to a far-off place where you'd never see your family and friends again. That's terrifying.

    • @Lightice1
      @Lightice1 9 років тому +2

      TheaterRaven
      I don't think that Peter as he is in the book would hunt them down, per se. Growing up is against the rules, and doing so gets you killed, but Peter forgets the Lost Boys he has killed as soon as they're dead so that he stays innocent. If a Lost Boy simply left, he would probably just forget them, too.

    I can definitely see where Rob and Doug are coming from when they criticize the film's inconsistencies. The story does start off as a blend of adult and G-rated material, and then switches during the last third, in which the kid-friendly aspect completely takes over. But if you think about it, it makes sense for the movie to progress this way. In the beginning, Peter is a work obsessed adult who has lost all touch with his inner child. But by the end of the film, he remembers his identity and has recaptured the magic of not only being Peter Pan, but being a kid. The movie's content and mood progressing from 'adult' to 'child' mirrors Peter's progression.

    I have always loved the concept of Peter Pan growing up. I like that he's this overachieving lawyer who's afraid of heights. But I also love that he went back to find and rescue his kids, and to rediscover his happy thoughts to fly

    LOL at Rob's reasoning with the girl. Lately I've been saying that too, "I'm sure (insert actor name) is a lovely person in real life, BUT..." As far as the kids, Rufio's great, but I also liked Thud, and the connection between him and Peter that develops.
    Isn't it remarkable that pretty much every movie version of Peter Pan has a really great portrayal of Captain Hook? Dustin Hoffman, Jason Isaacs, Hans Conreid, and so forth.

  • @OcpCommunications

    It's nice to see your real thoughts on the film. I don't have a problem with the last half at all to be honest. I mean what was Peter Pan supposed to be? Dark and brooding? It is based on a kids story and yes some Robin's schtick was bad but I thought this portrayal of grown up Pan was fine. The swordfight at the end I really liked between Hook and Pan. I honestly don't have any issues with the Pan scenes. I think Robin does a great job and the flying scenes are some of the best I have ever seen since Superman: The Movie. The film has this genuine magic to it that always makes me smile. From the score, to the performances, and to the story. Hook is one of my favorite films. It's a film that I adore flaws and all. It transports me to my childhood every time I see it. It helps because I related to the film in many ways. Especially to Peter's son. My father was just like Peter Banning in this movie. A parent who never kept his promises. The scene where Jack breaks all the clocks really does strike a chord with me.
    I can't watch the ending now though without crying though. When Robin says "Thanks for believing" and flies away it's like a visual representation of Robin saying goodbye to all of us. It was a scene that never really stuck with me that much, but after his unfortunate passing it really does have an impact.
    One of my favorite Spielberg films and I think it is one of his most underrated. It had a great message to it too, about keeping a part of your childhood with you at all times and never locking it away never to be seen again. The last line of the film sums up the whole point of the film for me.
    Granny Wendy:
    So... your adventures are over.
    Peter Banning:
    Oh, no. To live... to live would be an awfully big adventure.

      I see where you are coming from but the problem is that the first half or so of the movie is clearly more adult focused and the latter part turns into a kids disney movie with the "wacky" Robin Williams played out shtick. The movie just did not mesh well together imo. If they wanted to go the children's movie route they should have focused more on his son and less on Peter Pan in the movie. Instead what I got out of the movie is that it was mainly just focused on Robin Williams turning back into Peter Pan and defeating Hook while his children become somewhat of an afterthought

      +Mat B Exactly it's bipolar. Imagine a Batman movie that was using the Nolan style but then for the 2nd half it uses the light hearted Batman abd Robin style.
      Be 1 kind of movie for the entire movie.

    • @jasoncase9481
      @jasoncase9481 8 років тому +3

      A movie should be the same kind of movie for all of it.
      This movie goes from the serious of Raiders of the lost ark to The laughable IJ and the Crystal Skull. Or a home alone style movie which is completely inconsistent with what most of movie had before it.
      Would you want to see a Nolan Batman movie alter into a Campy Batman adam west movie for the final 40 percent of the movie?
      I doubt it that's why people have issues with it.
      It's not a bad movie its a entertaining movie that has obvious flaws along with it goes off the track of being a adult serious movie into a kids movie.

    I'm rather delighted to see so many people praising Dustin Hoffman's Hook! I loved this movie as a child, and I'll still watch it if it's on TV, and as much as I love Robin Williams (and was a big fan of his as a child), Dustin just blows him out of the water! He's just that perfect encapsulation of camp! He is so hammy, and yet he also pulls off intimidating very well!
    I'm in agreement: Robin Williams, Dustin Hoffman, Bob Hoskins and Dante Basco make the film for me! And as much as I feel bad for admitting it, Peter's daughter and Julia Roberts' as Tink do *nothing* for me! They're both so irritating! I can go easy on the daughter, as it's hard to write a child character that's not: A) A little adult or B) Sickly sweet to the point of nausea (and becomes an annoying little shit when they scream). Julia Roberts? Her performance makes me cringe! Maybe she was directed to act that way, but she's so bad! I thought I hated Tink from the 1954 Peter Pan Disney movie, but I wanted to crush Julia Roberts Tinkerbell with a fly swatter! She was such a selfish bitch! It was HER fault that Pan and Hook dueled at the end, when it could've been resolved if she just let Hook release Pan's children sooner! I get the whole "But if he did that, there'd be no movie", but Tink obviously doesn't give a shit about Pan's children (until after she's rejected by Peter)! She sets the whole thing up because she wants Peter back. Honestly, I'm surprised there was no reveal that SHE was the one who convinced Hook to kidnap the children, because it's pretty clear she'll tear apart and devestate a family, just to get "her man" back! As for what I would've done differently for the scene where Peter first encounters Hook as an adult... I'd remove all of Tink's dialogue. Have Peter get his kids and start walking away with them, when Hook (who's the only person convinced he's the real Peter Pan) shout something after him, making Peter stop in his tracks. Have Hook call Peter a coward, have him keep egging Peter on about not wanting to duel. Then finally, have Hook call Peter a codfish, and have that stir the repressed Boy Peter inside Adult Peter, and have that cause Adult Peter to accept the duel. Make Tink nervous, have her try to talk Peter out of it because she thinks he can't do it, but agree to train him when she sees the spark of boyish rogue in Peter's eyes.
    The son was pretty good. I think, if I'm remembering correctly, that he's Dustin Hoffman's son in real life. I believe he might have also been the actor to play the grown-up version of Adam Sandler's son in Click. On that note, of the son, I really didn't like the pirate baseball scene, even as a child. I guess it sort-of served a purpose, to make the son forget about and abandon his father, but I thought it felt forced.

While I admit the film is a bit cheesy and childish in places, and there's a few very dated effects, its very much what I expect and enjoy from a Peter Pan movie, so I always struggle to find any real negatives about it.

    It's kinda weird though that Once upon a time's Dark version of Pan is actually the closest to a real representation of the character.
    In the original book he killed the Lost boys for fun. He'd thin them out anytime there were too many or they grew too old [cause he was the only one who didn't age.]

    Doug and Rob are 100% spot on with this movie. I too like "Hook", even though I acknowledge that the movie has problems. The first two acts are very well-done, but the third act (minus the scene where they return home) is mostly clunky. John Williams' beautiful score is the big highlight, as well as Robin Williams' Peter Banning (in the first two acts)...and let's not forget Dustin Hoffman's pitch-perfect portrayal of Captain Hook. I'm actually surprised it has an abysmal rating of 30% on Rotten Tomatoes; I feel it should be more like 60% or 64%...but I'm glad there are plenty of people who have fond childhood memories of this flick.

    Wendy raises Peter = Beautifully Creepy.
    Yeah, I see that. It also explains how out of all the characters in the movie, Wendy still has an impression on Peter even for becoming a Prick Lawyer. She states 'hello' and he seems mesmerized by her. It really could be a love for a mother but I dunno, Robin did a good job at making that face that shows his character adores her despite all his faults.

    I think the problem is that you see this as a sequel to Peter Pan, when the movie isn't particularly focused on that aspect. It's far more married to the "concept" of Peter Pan, on what it means to grow up and how adults lose touch with their inner child. You're so focused on the minutia, rather than on the larger picture of the story.
    After all, the story even toys with the idea that Peter isn't Peter Pan at all; that it's all the delusion of a pathetic drunk who's unhappy with his life. That's why the concept of "belief" and "using your imagination" are such important themes. Neverland, Hook, the Lost Boys...they're all just symbols. This isn't a Peter Pan story at all; this is the story of Peter Banning with a Peter Pan theme. So Robin Williams not portraying a convincing Pan...it's kind of beside the point of the film.
    I don't know, just my interpretation.

    Personally it's cheesy but some of the whimsical sincerity the film gives and how heart warming it can be, no matter how old I am, I get a little emotional sometimes. It's a film that no matter how picky I can sometimes get at films, this still puts a smile on my face. I really do like this movie. It's a very fun film and I will never get tired of watching it.

    If you want an interesting series based on Peter Pan, there is a mini series called Neverland, where Peter and the lost boys start off as Victorian day thieves for Hook until they come upon a magical orb that teleports them to Neverland, where people of different eras exist. It is a good prequel to Peter Pan, to set up how Peter and Hook got to Neverland and how they became enemies.

    I love Peter Pan in Once Upon A Time because they change the character like they do with most of them and this still at the point where it was like "Oh, we're not Disney, we're going to totally screw with this character and the story to make him fit with all the others." and that's what I loved, the characters were all connected somehow and it was interesting to see how. After the Frozen addition it was like "This is popular, which means if we do it then we will be even more popular." and that made me really upset because they didn't change the characters story in Frozen, they basically just did an afterwards of the movie's events. Don't get me started on Cruella de Vil's addition and Maleficent's outfit, it's just so arghhhhhhhh.

    I'd like to hear their thoughts on the SyFy 2 part TV movie "Neverland" (2011) and the upcoming "Pan" (2015) which have nearly identical plots.
    I enjoyed Neverland, it wasn't great though. Pan looks amazing.
    The funny thing about Neverland is that Smee is played by the same actor, and many other aspects of the plot seem to lightly point toward it being a prequel to hook. It's not outright stated, and there are some points that don't match, but it's definitely loosely implied...imo.
    I just thought it was really weird that someone would make a big budget film that has almost the same plot as a cheap TV movie, only a few years later.

    Something I just realized: I think Hook is jealous of Peter. He wants the childlike innocence that Peter has, but he is so embittered that he can't get there. The line that always did it for me, and part of it is Bob Hoskins' delivery, is when Smee says, "Why don't we play with your island?"

    if you want a good version of peter pan, one that kind of got glanced over was the douglas wick version. it didn't nessasraliy do anything completely new but it probably the most accurate book adaption of it i've seen. you have voldemort playing hook and the peter though only hinting at that dark edge, he feels like a real kid. the tinkabell was also perfect, every bit the ball of singular emotion that julie roberts wasn't. you should give it a veiw.

    The one scene I don't understand in Hook is when he's a baby and he "Runs away".
    Something like,
    "I heard them talking about what I was to be when I grew up. I didn't want to grow up, so I ran away."
    But the visuals show a baby in a pram being struck by a strong gust of wind and then rolling down a hill.
    Peter is then taken to Neverland by Tinkerbell AS A BABY.
    It leaves these questions:
    1) Why does he say he ran away when he was blown away?
    2) How didn't his mother notice after a while?
    3) How did he survive flying out of the pram onto some concrete?
    4) How the hell did he grow up to be a teenager in Neverland? (Does that mean in Neverland you can grow up but when you hit like 13 you stop?)

    • @thoseweirdgirls4728
      @thoseweirdgirls4728 8 років тому

      since he was a baby I doubt he actually remembers it well and that's just what he thinks happened, at least that's what I think. as for aging, I think he probably aged slowly whenever he left neverland to spy on people.

    It's an "ok" movie, I was not that big of a fan when I first saw it. They are pretty spot on with what was annoying, the kids and when Robin Williams becomes peter pan. I found the sets to be a little too colorful and over the top. By far the best part of the movie is Dustin Hoffman as Hook and Bob Hoskins as Smead.
    I think where this movie really failed is that it could not decide if it was an Adult movie or a Kids movie and it did not do a good job of meshing the two.

    If you want to see the Pan they COULD have had in the third act, rewatch the insult contest between Peter and Rufio. That part at the end when he uses every ounce of creativity, intelligence, humor, and cruelty he has in his body to SMASH this uppity little nobody who thinks he can out Peter the Pan? THAT'S PETER PAN!
    Pan is what happens when you give a hyper intelligent middle schooler authority. He's great at influencing his peers, and at ASSERTING that influence over his peers if need be. He's a kid who wants to be treated like the most grown up kid around without ever actually growing up. He's wickedly smart, but he doesn't yet have all of the pieces of the moral compass that let's him use those smarts without using them for his own selfish goals. He's an immortal preteen who never grows out of it.
    He's NOT the giggling shtick machine who keeps getting lucky for some reason that they make him in the last act.

Not just Peter Pan, but a GROWN UP VERSION of Peter Pan; he's spunky, he's energetic, he's a sword wielder, he even has this mischievous side to him, but he's still an adult so he's more responsible when it comes to making choices, and knows how to take control of the situation. I definitely felt the competence during that climax.

    There is a book out there called The Child Thief by Brom that is about as dark as you can get with Peter Pan and still see Peter Pan and so some other character named Peter. This book was DARK like straight up murder and true magic and evil. I highly recommend it
