    The Outer Banks of North Carolina has earned the nickname "The Graveyard of the Atlantic." Why would people call this popular island resort area by such an unappealing name? On our recent trip to Hatteras Island, we went to the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum to learn more. This video overview of the museum provides a brief history of the dangerous waters of the Atlantic along the east coast of North Carolina. We discuss the weather, the wars, and even the pirates that have caused difficulty for sailors for centuries. And we'll talk about what lurks underwater that has led to shipwrecks and death along the lovely vacation destination of the Outer Banks.

    I taught 4th grade in North Carolina the early years of my teaching career and talking to the kids about "The Graveyard of the Atlantic" was always one of my favorite topics! Great video!

      I can see how teaching this topic would be fun. Because it was a really fascinating topic to see covered in museum exhibits. We had heard that there had been a lot of shipwrecks off the Outer Banks but we had not idea how bad things really had been until we visited this museum. Thanks for watching and commenting!

      This was a very cool museum. We already knew generally that the waters of the Outer Banks were called the Graveyard of the Atlantic. But we had no idea how many ship wrecks had occurred in the area until we visited this museum. It is pretty difficult to wrap your mind around so many ships sinking and so many people drowning or having to swim for their lives. Thanks for watching!

    It’s sad that so many boats sank in the Outer Banks, but the museum with all its artifacts is amazing. So many interesting facts; especially when some of those wrecks were sunk on purpose. They have some great artifacts. The info about the Titanic and its connection to the Outer Banks was crazy, and so was the Monitor sub.

    • @trvlnthru
      @trvlnthru  3 роки тому

      It really is such a sad history. But you are right - it is also very fascinating. Thankfully, large ships know to stay away from the Outer Banks now. We already knew there were a lot of shipwrecks in the area but were not aware of the scope of it all until we visited this museum. We are glad we did visit it. And we are glad you enjoyed our video!

    I could not think of the term "barrier" islands to save my life when I was making one of my videos. I think I called them channel islands, which I guess they are, but that's not the word I was searching for! We definitely saw and felt the power of the wind moving the sand around when we were there. The ranger at Bodie Island lighthouse told us quite a bit about the shipwrecks. These stories remind me a lot of all the shipwrecks in Lake Superior near where we live.

    • @trvlnthru
      @trvlnthru  3 роки тому +1

      Yes, the wind was definitely moving the sand around. During the filming of the next video we are going to post from that OBX visit, we felt like we were in a sandstorm on the beach. Pretty crazy how forceful the wind and waves can be. I was not aware of there being shipwrecks in Lake Superior so your comment sent me off to Google for more info. I had no idea that there have been like 6000 shipwrecks in the Great Lakes. I just usually think of lakes as calmer than oceans. So that is crazy! Thanks for watching and commenting!

      Yeah, it is a pretty crazy history of the shipwrecks. You are right that weather was a major factor. Of course, wars and pirates played a roll in a good number of shipwrecks too. Fascinating but sad to learn about everything that happened there. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    • @trvlnthru
      @trvlnthru  3 роки тому +1

      Yes, the ship that wrecked last year was on the shore for about a year but i believe they have finally dragged it away now. A number of the shipwrecks are only under about 15 to 20 feet of water so with the proper equipment, people can easily go down and look at the remains of the ships. Can you imagine being on vacation at the beach and all these bags of Doritos start washing ashore around you? That is a vacation! Thanks for watching!

    This was so interesting you guys! I always love hearing about the Outerbanks. I agree with Jack on the Blackbeard exhibit being the best! I find pirate history so interesting, especially when you're in the Outerbanks you can almost picture the ships out there! I can't believe they made a Titanic board game and the ice trays like whaaaat?! 😬

    • @trvlnthru
      @trvlnthru  3 роки тому

      The pirate exhibit was definitely the best! I wonder why they won’t let people film or photograph it when you can do so at every other exhibit. Maybe it is a visiting exhibit and the owner doesn’t want people taking pictures. I don’t know. But the pirate history of the Outer Banks is fascinating. Yeah, some companies really thought they should try to cash in on a ship sinking. At first, I could not even grasp what I was looking at when I saw those Titanic ice trays. Unbelievable.
