Has this decision been Red Bull's biggest mistake?

  • Sergio Pérez has been kept on for another year and he's been dreadful ever since. The driver is not up to scratch and as the other teams have developed their cars, the driver has struggled to come even close to the top 3. So have Red Bull almost conceded the constructor's title?

Red Bull earned a reported $226m from sponsors in 2023, and $140m in prize money (2nd was $9m less) so they will likely lose more in sponsorship than prize money... but it's impossible to know for sure

Personally I dont think RB cares too much about the Constructors title, they are clearly falling behind in development compared to the other teams because you lose wind tunnel and CFD time the higher you place. The money lost to finishing 2nd or 3rd in the championship is insignificant to these teams. The top teams are worth billions, the CFD and wind tunnel time means performance and that's where RB is falling behind atm.
As far as Perez' performance, yes its off, but not that much really, the issue is that the other top 3 teams are all closer to RB now and Perez, as good a driver as he is, is not a #1 driver. I also think there is something not right with this RB right now and the team is using Sergio to "figure it out" on race weekends. He seems to start each weekend behind Max then gets closer but Max is the best driver in F1 right now and he's getting performance out of the RB that only maybe a couple others could. In Austria Sergio was pretty close to Max in the practice and the first part of quali, but for some reason RB always puts him out nearly last which can compromise the prep and flying laps for being rushed or not even getting a time in. This is a team thing not a driver thing. Also, with his race against Hulk in Austria, everyone's been trashing Sergio for not being about to out perform a Haas, well it's not that big of a stretch when you have a hole in the side of your car. Piastri took out Leclerc's front wing in turn 1 and Sergio's sidepod in like turn 4, all on lap 1.

Money is not a consideration. Before the cost cap, they were willing to spend considerably more to advertise their product on the top step. There's no advertising value in the conductors championship.

Something that Andy didn't mention, is that Red Bull do not have a single challenger for the Constructor's Title in 2024. They have 2 - Ferrari AND McLaren. (And even Mercedes have just stepped up.)
This is good for Red Bull in the Constructor's Championship, because Ferrari and McLaren have been taking points away from each other - preventing either of them from gaining ground on Red Bull in the WCC.
As long as Red Bull do not have a SINGLE challenger, one that is MUCH stronger than all of the rest, Red Bull have nothing to worry about - and can afford to keep Perez as their 2nd driver.
(It's not necessary for Perez to get 2nd in the Driver's Championship for Red Bull to win the Constructor's Championship - look at 2022. Perez was 3rd in the WDC, but Red Bull still won the WCC by over 200 points.
Even if Perez had finished 2 places lower in ALL his races in 2022, and scored 103 fewer points, Red Bull would STILL have won the Constructor's Championship in 2022!)

Wrong. As you clearly saw in 2022 and 2023…RBR is definately aiming for constructors championship. But this year it’s a bit different cos the NEW 2026 car must be tested and developed.
They expect Checo to get back up to speed… and if not, there is a performance clause in his contract.
And becoming 2nd in constructors would give RBR more CFD and Windtunnel time …..which they could very much use from Jan 1 2025 to test the 2026 car….
It might be that becoming 1st or 2nd is equal fine by RBR.
More money, less CFD/windtunnel than the competitors or
Bit less money and more CFD/windtunnel time than they have had these last 3 seasons.

If Perez gets the budget in by being a can selling figure in his region. If money is not needed via the price money, they can get an advantage by getting 2nd or 3th in the constructors. This gives 5 or 10% extra aero testing. This is probably much needed for the new 2026 regulations.

That second driver option is tough for Red Bull. Perez isnt a top driver. Sainz was an option, but turned down by RB. I dont think he was a big enough improvement anyway. Russell and Norris are probably better of leading their teams, same goes whichever of Hamilton or Leclerc will top Ferrari in 2025. But Piastri probably has an easier time beating Norris than Verstappen in equal machinery, and the same goes in Ferrari and Merc. So Red Bull probably offer the worst second seat among the top teams, and anyone with aspirations of winning has better chances with another team. So their best options are in-house talents (I really want to see more of Lawson) or midfield team leaders, but I dont think Gasly, Albon or Hulkenberg are necessarily better than Perez. I'd have loved to see Alonso at Red Bull though.

What so far every single channel and outlet has been missing - or maybe I am wrong, would not be the first nor last time - is that Red Bull simply do not want to risk (on top of the 4 reasons presented here) to be with TWO new drivers in 2025. Getting to the first race of the season without Newey, Verstappen, Perez?

He is fast and reliable, qualifies extremely well and most importantly has a good relationship with Verstappen.

Before watching, it's simple why Perez got his extension. Red Bull doesn't sell cars, they sell cans. For Ferrari, Merc, Aston, Audi, Renault to win the constructors is for the car brand. For Red Bull on the other hand, it's Checho's face on billboards all around south and middle America, not Max's. What they lose in a year or two in lost points in the championship is more than compensated by keeping him on until he retires and give him a Coulthard like live long ambassador role. It's commercial, they sell cans.

The reason Perez underdevelops under redbull is the same every team with a huge disparity between 1st and 2nd drivers: a car with "driveability" issues. I.e. McLaren Ricciardo or Vettel and Leclerc at Ferrari
During the hybrid era Mercedes invested heavily in a car that worked well for both Lewis, Nico and later Valtery. On that front RB never shied away from making a car that directly correlated to only one of their drivers needs at the expense of the 2nd. If they focused on the constructors championship a new approach would be needed
