Fascinating film thank you. Our Druid group have been working seasonal rituals at the Long Man since the Spring Equinox 2000 and we have watched the sun's progress around the Long Man as part of our ceremonies, but mostly from an afternoon perspective. We can say that from Samhain the sun no longer lights up the Long Man. For a while after Samhain, you can see the sun rolling down the right side of the hill like a firey wheel which is fabulous. From then on no direct sunlight hits the figure until the Spring Equinox. ☀🌠🌌
@@historysmysteriesunveiled8043 No, we are modern druids who take our inspiration from the book of nature and from studying the legacy of myth, legend and folklore added to archaeology to create a modern spirituality relevant to the world we live in. We revere our ancestors but revere the earth and its cycles more. Our ceremonies reflect a modern outlook with the influence of our studies. All that gives us a sense of continuity, rootedness and a growing community of like-minded souls. 🙂
The depression in the hillside where the Long Man is carved, to my eye, looks deliberately quarried. Also, the area of flat and Dragon Hill below the Uffington White Horse.
Not to spoil anyones fun, but all archaeology shows him to be much more modern than previously thought, in fact a 2003 archaeological investigation showed that the figure may have been cut in the 16th or 17th century AD. Hes also not in the position he was in originally and for a long time he's not been cut into the chalk, but breeze blocks painted white. I used to work for the Sussex Archaeology Society, who are responsible for his care and upkeep, and I helped with the painting one year
Ahh thank you it wasn't just me thinking it then👍 I'll try something else out you then, to me the man looks like he's holding back the dark with those sticks
@@jaf69uk Yes, I can see that. They could be 'Uriel's Machine' measuring sticks? If you are familiar with that book. Great findings. My mum got a bit obsessed with the Long Man when I was a kid. That area was her old stomping ground. She did some lovely Long Man screen prints. Anyway, along with others in the comments, from the drone footage, the slope looks quarried out. Not seen it like that before, even from IRL visits to it.
I remember seeing the Long Man while riding the train to and from Eastbourne, where I stayed in 1991, and took a picture that includes him. Since he appears to be holding two poles, I though this might be the source of the name Polegate, which is a nearby town. (I'm an American, and had some distant relatives in Wilmington - the one in Delaware.)
The Surveyor of Wilmington? Or the Fulcrum of Balance between the 2 Serpent Energy Paths? The 2 Solstices being the opposites in alignment, in time and space, Light and Dark, Sun and Earth, High and Low Frequencies and Opposing Forces of Radiation and Gravity. Duality. Good observations of the shadow and light by Mr Mason in that beautiful landscape.
After a night drinking rather too much in the local pub, my mates and I decided to walk up the longman to the top of the hill. It's steeper than it looks and I wouldn't recommend it in the dark.
In Philip Carr Gomm’s book ‘The Druid Way’ he claims a few theories about the Long Man. One that it is actually a woman or goddess because there is no male appendage…. The other legend is there was another Long Man on a hill around the corner. The were given offerings during the solstice as a fertility rite. I live near the Long Man and visit often and the ancient tree in the churchyard. I have filmed on the hills there and often the signal is garbled as you walk over the leylines
The Long Man here, seams, to be the least interesting thing at this amazing site. No mention of the Massive Stone Walls? Pit Burroughs? Terraces with water collection, or crop output? And that even looks like a Megablock Habitat just right of this recreated, & chalked Tall Dude? Drone Shots are revealing much here. Well done, keep on chipping away at these mysteries!🤔
Would be funny if the shadow staffs meant seperating the year at the equinox. But there is a heavy focus on both the 1/8th and 1/6th year and the shadows do look assymetric. Although with different horizon positions, that may not be the case.
I agree with the deliberately quarried comment below. Looks like the 'builders' modified the landscape and recessed a panel in order to create the effect. I wonder if there was a time when the shadows reached the staffs he is holding locking the site more precisely to the solstice. Even if it wasn't created artificially somebody noticed the shadow effect and aligned the figure for some reason. Finding a time when the shadows met the vertical lines may be a way of dating the figure.
Has anyone done sacred geometry, measurement and compare with Giza pyramid. Could you show all the Ley lines and toroidal wave lines of the earth please Hugh.
I was born and live in Sussex and just recently found out about the symbolism of long mans surveying sticks and I have just read Robin Heath & John Michell’s book “The Lost Science Of Measuring The Earth”. The accuracy & complexity of the ancient surveyors of Britain was mind blowing. Perhaps the Long Man is a Giant!? Great footage & Solstice research here
Ive been Reading on Google about the history of the green man/long man, what we see here is breeze blocks painted white, before that it was bricks, before that it was cut out in trenches.
Amazing video as always...but I must confess I was disappointed this was not the Cerne Abbas Giant, the real "long" man with his formidable serpent energy. We all know only one proper staff is needed to mark the 'longest' day of the year ;)
@norbu326 The Cerne Abbas Giant is naked, with an erection. Fun facts include the claim that the penis was lengthened during one restoration, when the navel was mistaken for the tip of the penis.
Grew up near there. Scored 28 not out at cerne abbas cricket ground. Always remember being told the tale that if you take your woman up to the giant at solstice and walk her a"long" the shaft.... rumour has it she will be dripping like a knackered freezer before you get to the top of the shaft. Wetter than an otters pocket.
Watching the video I was struck by the fact that the long man appears on an unusually flat plane on the hill. My question is the flat plane natural or man made?

Your telling me nobody has thought to check this over years it's been there? I'd take a guess that you could probably find it out from the Google earth programs history photos or by downloading a night sky app for mobile phones
Absolutely. Or at least have the common sense to mention it along with wildly underwhelming statements like we are beginning to piece in together. This video would have contained more useful information if it was silent
They are both either side of the man with the sticks and roughly parallel to the sticks not too far from the sticks ..... You can't see those similarities?
to me he looks a little like a man walking through a door. Also I can fully believe that the original image was holding two serpents or staffs with serpents.
Maybe he is walking through the door/portal and we are seeing his backside- perhaps something is in the hill? Or his walking to another plane hence the barrows?
@@SheaNicholas01 I could see the ancient people of the area having the great feast and celebration where the long man opens his door to check on the people. Imagine horns and drums and other musical instruments that announce his arrival in the morning, and then at the end of the day, somber music and the lighting of a great bonfire as he says goodbye for another year.
