I was hit by a car in 2018 and almost died. 4 months later I was riding. Every 6 months or so I end up getting another surgery because of that incident. So far, both hips, my left knee, and my right shoulder (twice) have been replaced. Now, I'm going in for fusion surgery on my spine on Feb28. Am I going to ride again? You betcha. What's the point to all of this? If I can do it, so can you. Don't give up on riding. It's tough with any surgery and this one's going to be hell but, it can be done. So, make your mind up to get back on your bike and ride despite what any doctor tells you. You got this.
That's really rough. I'm sorry. The drivers in Ohio are very dangerous and I've been hit twice. You're right. I could keep trying if I really wanted to. Here's the thing though: I don't have that desire or drive anymore. I don't want to pedal for 10 hours at a time. I want to spend less time grinding out the miles and more time making videos, enjoying beautiful places, and loving dreams. It feels like I've just gotten enough out of long distance cycling and am ready to move on. That actually brings me peace these days. And I'll definitely take medical advice with a grain of salt. I've proven them wrong before with my knee injuries.
@@hotgarbageD I get it. I really do. But, I'm going to make a small prediction that one of these days (hopefully it'll be sooner rather than later) you're going to miss it and you'll start again. Either way, I wish you the best and I hope you recover quickly without any issues. And I'll still watch your videos.
I do think you're onto something. I was riding the other day and had the thought that got me into it all in the first place: what if all I had to worry about in life was riding my bike? I've not given up entirely. I actually just got an entire headlight, turn signal, horn, and hazard light kit for my ebike. I also added some nice mirrors and better winter gear. I'm going to continue my original experiment to create an ebike that I can take on wonderful adventures. It's so hard to say goodbye to my dreams some days. I haven't given up entirely. Just trying to accept my new life. I think I'll always be on two wheels as long as I can. Thank you for the kind words and for watching. It's not easy for me to put myself out into the world.
@ Just a bit of addendum - I got hit. Again. 14Jan. Idjit made a right turn at a light and almost ran over me. Slobber knocked me to the pavement. Covered in bruises but nothing's broken and none of the fake stuff is out of place. Hurtin like hell and kind of angry that I can't get my bike back from the cops, yet. But, just makes me more focused on riding some more before my surgery. 😂 As far as you getting your bike the way you want it - that's what makes riding so cool to me. Every bike on the road is different. Even if they look the same. A little add-on here. A little tweek there. A different saddle or a decal that means something to the owner. Pretty independent group of people if you ask me. And being one of us you got the bug for life dude. HA!
Well that's a heck of an isolated I wasn't expecting! Wishing you a speedy recovery of both body and bike. I've been across the country and back and the worst drivers I've ever seen are all around me at home. They're horrid. Glad you're not giving up riding! I love getting my bike just right. I've got a beefy 12 volt system, massive battery, and all sorts of cool stuff. Just got my horn, turn signal, headlight, and hazard light kit today. Hopefully installing it tomorrow. Should be a super cool ebike! I definitely have the bug!
You know maybe you could still go out west this year. Get rid of the camping gear and just credit card to tour. Flights are cheap on Frontier airlines. Or perhaps go to Florida. A lot of times when I'm cycling up the west coast of Florida I just walk my bicycle. I could really relate to what you were saying about having back pain after a long ride. I really notice my body has slowed down as I've reached my mid 50s. It's humbling but, technology is on our side as it relates to electric bicycles. (Okay thank you for showing your video.)
I really like that plan. Sadly, I just don't have the funds to do that any time soon. I'm starting from nothing now and have to rebuild. I'm working on building my own business and finding work that I can do remotely. Once that's going, I'll be on the road. I'm already planning a cheap flight with my bike to go stay with a friend for a while in 2025. Very much looking forward to that. Florida has quickly made it to the top of my travel list. It just looks so sunny and fun there. I could make some wonderful wildlife videos there.
I do love badminton. Never played pickle ball, but it does look fun. I still need my outdoor activities. I think I'll go back to stand up paddle board. That was one of my favorites. I'd love to get my sailing certifications as well.

Trike?
Quite possibly. All depends on the seating. Custom seat could let me ride something with the right geometry and such. Just have to be very careful.
Haha maybe just start come spring 😂
Find a better sport activity. Indoors. Maybe pickleball ??
