Once again Captain Rick proves why he is the best ever....
now that is thinking out of the box. great job. being creative saved my life a number of times, and even saved my life and my son's while at sea on a crappy bayliner motor boat, that snapped its alternator bracket. no belt, no alternator, no water pump. yep. we were in a real pickel off the florida coast in a 3 knot current heading to new york. so many boaters are lost every year in that same region. thank god, that god gave me a brain and a good imagination or else my son and i wouldnt be here today.
That tall ship the Gulden Leeuw is chartered as a High School Ship. They have up to 44 10th and 11th grade students and 6 teachers onboard not including the actual ships crew. Has to be a really awesome experience for the students.
👍Captain Rick,Love to watch how you always come up with repair solutions! Have a great sail❤️🙏
Captain putting them vids out 4 us 2 enjoy tks.
Thanks Tony, we appreciate that you enjoy!
You are now Captain Rick “Mcguver” great improvising 👍🏼
Love being one of the first on ..... I hope everyone is well 👍
Thanks Clide, enjoy the video!
Thanks Cap Maddy and Ricci🥰😇👀 + Crew....Saved by the ring 👍👍
Shoe🇺🇸
This episode had me in stitches. (Ya just can't have enough spares eh?)
Seems that sewing machines are a staple on sailboats. That's a very good idea, you never can tell when you'll need one.
Necessity, the mother of all invention, don’t you love it
At least you know the ring isn't lost. Cheers.
Another good day for boat work for both of us mine is never ending,,,but I take my time,,have a great sail my friends 😅
Yup, it's called, thinking outside of the box. Ya have to be good at it to keep things moving. I do it all the time. Great finish on another very humerus video. Stay safe always, from the Philippines, my friends.
A "ring" in time saves nine. 😂 Excellent temporary rigging. 👏
Captain Rick that was thinking outside the box for success. 👏👍⛵️🏝
Never giving up and always thinking of solutions from outside the box. Good on ya Capn’
Well done Skipper, I love the way seamen always find a solution at sea. Fair winds mate, greets from the Balearics.
I have been watching from day one. This episode was the best videography/Cinematic to date. Sophisticated Lady loving it! 👏⚓️⛵️
Hello from SW Florida!! 👍👍👍 el captain you always figure it out. Always enjoy you and your family!
Necessity is the mother of invention 🤔👍
Since you never put down the dodger, why not make or buy a hard dodger that has proper glass windows and is solid. I see on the Amel 55 a perfect dodger that would fit on your sailboat. Maybe use that design as a template?
I'm just at 11 minutes of the video and i could not resist to comment on the swell, perfect swell to sleep like a baby and-or 🤪🤮like a king, i do remember that swell( souvenir, souvenir)! Isla Grande is not far, Sophisticated Lady should reach it by the end of the video. Now, let roll the rest of the video 👀
You did good Capt. Rick with making do with what you had for that auto-piolet.
After I snapped the autopilot bolt in the same fashion on my Hylas several years ago, I started carrying 4-5 extra bolts just for that reason. Since that time I have since snapped 2 or 3 more from the high loads coming from Grenada to Colombia, etc. I used a stack of fender washers to offset the correct distance in the same fashion as your silver ring. The new autopilot replacement bolt was $85 so I said screw that! Much cheaper to keep a stash of stainless bolts on hand! I think we must have just missed you in Portobello as I was down there delivering the same Hylas to Shelter Bay for her new owner. Enjoy San Andreas!
Yes I was hoping to do same with the big fender washers, but sadly I didn’t have enough of the right size onboard to fill the gap
Great save Capt Rick! as we say in my Marine Corp....Improvise Adapt Overcome ! Greetings from that Old Jarhead in WNC.
Rick you are a master
Well done Capitan Rick
Good to see you back sailing again. Where’s your passage leading you this time ? Keep your family safe, my friend
Wow those seas the waves you must get your ring back could use it as template for new spacer I hope.
Socket. From tool box. Will work. Love the videos.
good fix Rick thats thinking out of the box
“If the women don’t find you handsome, they should at least find you handy”. LOL. Good job.
❤
I'm surprised you didn't have a number of metal washers that would have done the job your ring did.
I had a few but not nearly enough to fill that void.. they were big washers that are not very common for other uses onboard
Engineuity at its best.
Há sempre um solução para tudo muito bom 🙏👍👍😜👏
Ingenuity at its best!,
Hi Ric, you usually skip stitches because of blunt needles but the tenara type thread is notorious for tension issues. I usually crank the tension right up on my sailrite when using this thread.
Cap'n I do believe you have a little farmer blood coursing through those sea veins of yours. Only I can walk out the field and head to the parts store if I don't have a spare or pull something off something else and make it work temporally that ends up permanent until it fails. Unlike you being in the middle of a huge body of water. You are well versed in everything on your boat plus some. Just don't think you've mastered walking on water.....YET. Thanks for another great video!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey Ho & up she rises
That was genius Rick, but on your fix it looked like the bolt rocks back and forth a tiny bit... isn't their a way to make some sort of gussets or tension rods to support it so it could never snap or does it need to have play so something else won't break down the line
Sound like a ringer to me
You may want to stock some autopilot hardware after this!
Don’t forget to cover the condensing unit Rick.
Awesome only Danny can fly in doors!!!
In NZ we call that A Number 8 wire fix job
Good temporary fix That's just the kind of thing I would have done ,there is always something.
Sew, sew video🤣
Kapitan zik zak, pięknie żyjecie pozdrowienia z Polski
Ingenious You would make a great pilot/engineer on helicopters in Northern Canada.
If you had the next bigger size nut that would slide over the bolt. I've done that many times then with a washer on each end !
Rick, You're lucky you have a lot of Rube Goldberg blood in you.
😎💙👍👍
😎
😃👍👍👍❤
silicone seam sealer could improve the durability
I've listened to your issues with fuel and engine oil over the years. Would you be interested in some filters that remove water and contaminants from engine oil, and water and impurities from fuel? I think I have 6 filter housings, and would give to the channel 2 of them with the mag drive pump. When installed on an engine you use high temp steel reinforced hose and tap off of the oil pressure sensor and feed back in to the rocker cover or through the oil filler cap. I have a magnetic drive pump that could be used on the fuel system to keep it circulating to remove the fungus & water.
You left Panama now did I miss you say where you were sailing to or is it a secret??? The way the wind force on the boat I would think you went north.
Hoping you have better luck than I with the PTFE thread. Sewing really thick belting to reinforce a sail bag so I can't use the needle that SR recommends. Do you know which needle you're using? great vid as usual!
when are you coming to Costa Rica Captain
over drama! dos the trick
Do you ever have any issues checking into countries with the bird?
Great work-a-round for auto pilot as long as it wasn't the old wedding band lol.
🤣
Do babies and small children get seasick? TIA
Yes
Sunbrella is over priced and overrated weathermax is a superior fabric and ptfe thread only
It never hurts to be good at improvising...sending big hugs to all of you and all your helpers from Calgary!
Kid's getting big, save up Capt $ soon he'll want a 13' Boston Whaler like we all did
...with a 50hp Mercury and a long tiller!
