I’ve inherited my dad's 2007 Honda City which is pushing to 17 years old this year! No matter what car comes into my family, this Honda always brings a smile to my face like nothing else can, and on a reliability front, it has never left me stranded. Mine is not even the vtec but the little things like, the sound and feel of shifting gears, the rev-happy and quiet engine, and the fact it’s teaching me car maintenance like no new car would, makes me want to keep it forever if I could.
TLDR; got 2019 rtr 160 4v without a doubt keeping it for couple of years without any worries For me an upgrade is far fetched now. I have been learning to ride a bike with a past experience in riding scooty. I have a 2019 rtr 160 4v, bought second hand but in very good condition. 3 months in I don't think I have even mastered 20% of this machine's capability. I don't see any point in upgrade atleast for a year or more. Even when I do, my younger brother would give a arm and leg to have this bike because it's in such a good condition and a good bike. And moreover I am torn between what I like, I see the appeal in cruisers like RE, but I want machines which are fun to ride like dukes. So looks of retro and performance of a sport is what I want it seems 😂. Triumph might be reasonable choice but with no dealerships around 400kms, so not feasible.
43:07 Exactly what I did with the RE showroom that refused SM650 ride, I had the money and was going to pay the full amount but they judged me based on my appearance i.e. dark burnt skin as I was out on an adventure, unkempt hair, cheap clothes I have never bought clothes worth more than Rs. 2000 and still wear shirts that cost Rs. 100 from the local market. Instead I bought my childhood dream bike with well known issues, I will get a harley or some other real cruiser later skipping RE.
I have the mindset of kartik The decision on finalising the scrambler 400x was just a reflection of it, I need the most practical single cylinder motorcycle and not an eyesore.
We're not convinced they're clear on which ones they're moving to, Akshay. Remember they test so many vehicles, their process of thinking about upgrades is very different from yours and ours
I rode my Ducati scrambler (2015) for good 9 years, it was never my daily commuter but a motorcycle which I rode twice a month for weekend trips and maybe for one multiple day trip each year. Did in total mere 22k Kms. Most of us are not so lucky like you guys who can ride motorcycle to work, for work and live with those beautiful machines through out the day. We trouble finding time among our short weekends, among our weekly chores, among our fatherly duties and among our husband responsibilities. Still we promise ourselves that we would go for a ride tomorrow and then we trouble finding that tomorrow. I have always had a tradition of touching my bike everyday giving it a kiss or a pelt whenever I leave home for work, it gave me a feeling of satisfaction that even when I am not riding it everyday, it’s always there for me waiting patiently. One day after a 500kms ride, I felt like I wanted something new, felt like the Ducati would be better off in someone else’s hand. Suddenly felt that it was just not enough, So sold it and after reading, watching everything about every motorcycle, bought a Speed twin 1200. Funny enough, I stumbled upon you guys while I was doing all of that. Took your advice on buying a motorcycle which I wanted, understanding my needs, so I researched myself in the process. Shortlisted things that gave me happiness, pleasure and what would bring that smile every time I ride it. Budget being not an issue, it was a whole world to choose from but thought of keeping it realistic, of what purpose I had with my motorcycle, for which I will always find time however busy it becomes. Specification wise it was low end torque, a classic roadster and a motorcycle which would never feel old even after 15 years of its age, a motorcycle even my son would love to take to his college one day and ‘oat important, I never want my motorcycles to be overwhelming. So I went with triumph and Wow, what a motorcycle it has been, already rode 2000 kms in a week and it brings me a smile every time. So you may call that I got bored but for me it was an upgrade that would keep me engaged and bring me back to the thing I so dearly love. Sometimes, even if you are aware that certain things would take all of your stress and give you that freedom, we just do not find enough reasons or time to do it. Hopefully my Triumph is the one for which I would not find reasons to ride but I just do. Happy Motorcyling!
I relate to what Shumi spoke about in the beginning on so many levels.. I have been riding a Honda Dio BS3 2014 for the past 8 years and 90,000 kms. And both of us have been through it all. I once have been the immature brat who twisted the throttle to the max to see how fast it can go, then I've gone through a phase where I took it to off-road trails even motorcycles shyed away from, I've toured on it, and done a lot of things. Then later, it suddenly dawned on me that I've been putting it through hell, that it doesn't deserve to be treated like that and decided to slow down and take good care of it. But all the damage had already caught up to it by then. The headlight unit was hanging (which is a common issue in Dios), the suspension bushes were fried etc. etc. But rather than selling it off and finding another scooter, I decided to take up the responsibility and live with it. Even after I put it through hell, it has never created a situation of pain for me. Never broken down, has always been with me. Whenever I feel like crying, I take the Dio and go for a ride. It has taken me to college, then another college, and now takes me to my coaching institute clocking 50 kms a day. All of it, and never a complaint and never a dull moment. Still gives me a tank to tank mileage of 51 kms to a litre. Since he is now around 10 years old, my parents are forcing me to sell it. I've thought about it as well. I've learned so much on it that I need to move on now. I can ride at 80 and not have a shrill of adrenaline rush in my blood. I've gotten used to speed and the brakes and the tire sized and all limit me. But can't help myself to sell the thing. I can't convince my parents to let him stay. And I can't also understand if this emotion I have for it is momentary. Just torn...
Aww man!! We feel that. If you think you will continue to use it - then keep it. But be real. If not - better that someone else gets to use it and keep it in good shape. 🤞🏽
@AnandA2155 I have the same feeling about my 2011 Honda Aviator. I dont put it through hell, but its been a reliable work horse, always fun to drive, never failed on me all this time. I did make some modifications including replacing thr old Halogen based heeadlight with OEM Led headlight that came with 2018 Aviator model before it was discontinued. Vehicles have life, i believe in that and probably not gonna sell this ever even if i buy a new one in future!

When you upgrade, sell your old beloved motorcycles to your friends at a bit cheaper price, that way you get to see them and ride them whenever you want. I did that with my last 3 bikes! 😉 I sold my 1980 CI Bullet to an unknown guy in OLX, but still in contact with him, and asks him about the whereabouts of the oldie!
7 minutes in and already hearing stuff I'd never even processed before. I always thought i liked the versatile machines on principle, but then I realise that Mr Marmar has been riding as long as I've been alive, and I have lots and lots of riding growing up to do!
Yamaha in my city still doesnt give test rides, they have tens for mt15s, r15s, fzs lined up for sale but not even a single bike for test ride. staff is not nice once u get ur bike handed over. When i decided to buy duke 250, i talked to ktm manager what my concerns are with my current bike (fz25) are, he said whatever concern u have if they are not fixed by the right ppl, u straight away talk to me, i'll get all ur issue fixed no matter what. KTM showroom had more test ride bikes then the show piece. loved the experience.
Yeah, why are two wheeler dealerships so unfriendly? Its almost as if they look down upon us. I have the opposite experience with cars, they put you on a pedestal the moment you walk in.
No clear plan yet, AD. We're waiting for NX dates from Honda and the larger machines, we're not convinced that our current formats are the way for those - we're working on this.
My first upgrade was for abs. My Ritz was without abs and had a small accident on that, which could have been avoided if I had abs. So when my wife started to drive and she took our son to school in that, I knew it was time to change. It was a memorable 75k kms and i was still enjoying it but could not compromise on safety.
I am riding my 24 years old bajaj calibration every day and still enjoying it as excited i was on the first day. It has the same cushion 3rd set of tyres and second silencer after 1,42,000 km.
The content and the presenters.. a match made in heaven.. Just 2 boys talking about their love for machines.. Dilemma arrives when u have to decide to grab this with a cuppa coffee or a chilled brew 👌👍

The past 2 months I've been binge watching your videos and talks all the way till the powerdrift podcast and I've learnt A LOT!!! And now with respect to the video. I have a Himalayan 411. (Bought when I was 18 with my own savings, so to me at that time it was THE DREAM BIKE) And with what i have heard about the 390 Duke 2024... I took a test drive of it. And... BOY OH BOY... I'm blown away. But still... I'm very much into the adv segment. Hence... Waiting for KTM ADV 390 2025. Until then, ride my Violet (Himalayan) to the MAX! Living my dreams! (Going to Ladakh this sept (again... Not a big deal maybe...😅😅 But a HUMONGOUS thing for me)). Again. THANK YOU so MUCH for every piece of advice and guidance you provide. Well there’s one more reason to sell your beloved motorcycle that is if you’re moving to a different country for your career and so now you don’t want to keep your vehicle parked while you spend nights dreaming of being owning a motorcycle once again and your only solace is watching two gentlemen on UA-cam talking passionately and giving some sane advice on patience which for you is being tested each passing day as you’re counting each penny going towards the bike fund that….. **sigh** I may have gone off topic a little. /s - I wasn’t going to comment initially but currently the UA-cam videos are closest thing to experiencing motorcycles and each MotorInc notification brings me joy.

My 2016 Ford Figo is 200k kms run... What's the most logical solution to it? I still have a requirement of a diesel hatchback which are non existent... I'm going to drive 60+kms a day at least, If I plan to get the engine overhauled at Ford service centre they'll charge around a lakh rupees if I intend to sell it I'm getting offers that are ridiculously low under 1 lakh?!? What do I do?

When i got my rtr 200 on 2018, the only non negotiable feature for me was i wanted abs I wanted matte black and fi etc and what not but back then abs was only available in 200 carb and so i decided to go carb over fi but still wanted abs The bike was sold very sparingly to dealers so had to wait for a month or two and when it still wasnt an option in my small city, i went 350 kms to dehradun to buy the first rtr 200 abs that was in uttarakhand. It was costly and yes fi was something that might have been better comp to carb but tbh i am glad i got abs You use it once or twice but thats the money well spent, my younger brother had to panic brake twice snd and it wasnt for abs he could have lost control, that day i was able to finally justify my decision to everyone.
We don't think this is a useful way to think about commuters. if you just need a tool, a 125 is enough. If you want to have fun, you can choose a 1250 too
Just adding a couple of points on top of what Shumi said about lemons. If you gonna take your vehicle offroad it’s gonna take a lot more maintenance. Bearings will will go bad faster , suspensions will need rebuild even if they are not leaking. They are not lemon just taking a vehicle offroad regularly will take a toll on components and you will need to take care of them more frequently.

Shumi is the voice of my heart ! I have a GT650 and a VW Polo(first model) that i absolutely love. The Polo was my first car ever (2011) and it is in mint condition. The GT650 is a recent purchase (22/06/22) that has a customised British Racing Green tank with Gold stripes and a Cognac leather seat. But i don’t use them. Cos they are really hard to maintain. The Polo due to non availability of parts and the GT cos it’s just too beautiful to get it dirty. For my use however i have the 2024 VStrom sx (Shumi’s recommendation) and the current gen i20 (2023) and now theres an Exter (2024) too and i’ve never been happier ❤

Hey, i am planning to purchase the bajaj pulsar n160 the latest version with usd forks but it no longer has oil cooling so i am bit worried i daily commute to clg and sometimes i ride a bit with hard acceleration please tell if i am making a good choice or should i look for something else (not at all interested in tvs and the budget is under 2 lakhs ) need motorinc advice
I had a old 2011 Thunderbird which my Dad owned then , he rode it all the way to places like ladakh he has had all iconic machines like Yezdi , Bullet 500 the rx100 and settled on Thunderbird and a Passion pro And just last year around april we decided to revirw our purchases ( financial crunches !) and dad just told me that we'd probably sell kt since it gave a milege of 28 Old uce stuff and also a lot of issues from fork issues to speedometer problems, valve timing tyres and what not a heck of issues to the extent where we spent about 6000 for every 2 months and still compromised reliability So we decided to the call and sold it for a good amount snd got a 125 cc honda which was way more practical and reliable as well as efficient. Now a year later i kinds regret that decision coz i always rode on much more powerful machines and 125 doesn't really match to standards and so we are deciding to buy a bike probably meteor 😂 for touring or so and thats it . I love this video it's reasonable and way more relatable for us Thanks to team great content Also had a query should i buy a meteor ? Or something better i love to cruise at around 100 kmph under 2.5 lakhs
Alot of people also downgrade their big bike to something smaller. Ex. Selling off their africa Twins and GSs' to get himalayans for purposes of practicality rather than a financial angle. Maybe an episode on that would give great insight and complement this episode really well :)
A frequent car upgrade is one of the biggest wealth destroyer for most middle class Indians. I have a brezza for 7 years, and am totally fed up by its horrible nvh by now. Have to use anc earphones daily with it. But to get the same practicality, i may have to spend more than twice of what i had bought it then, so keeping it just because of its practicality & reliability. Don't want to destroy wealth unless it's absolutely necessary.
Hi Shumi and Karthik, loved this episode. I wanted to ask you both a question regarding upgrading. I own a Apache RTR 200 4V, the one that came out in 2016. I still love riding it and I do feel happy every time I use it, but wanted to know few suggestions of what bikes I should be looking at to upgrade? Looking at a different genre to make it interesting.
I havent driven 2 wheeler since I bought my first car, I know 2 wheeler not for me, I am a car guy. But my current vehicle I know its benefits but safety issue and highway drives calling me to upgrade. Very confused which one to upgrade, but my first car was smooth purchase had budget constraints so not much choice knew its for 3-4 years, now its more itching safety, comfort, good engine and features lots off, ....
My budget 15L. Looking for something with high ground clearance, and a good performance. Not a fan of features. Travels a lot. Suggest me. Will be okay with used cars too.
For me, I was forced into an upgrade situation thanks to the NGT rule in NCR. I was more than happy with my 12 year old SX4 and had planned suspension upgrades. Unfortunately, the rule killed all those plans to keep the car as lokg as I can.

Have Brezza 2016 Diesel model. I am concerned about continuing it anymore as it is diesel. Need your thoughts on it . Complaints of it are Hard Suspension apart from that it serves me in all the way it can. Need your advice on keeping this for 5 more years or is it wise to move on now for the alternate fuel option. I don't want to become a better driver. I just want a very very comfortable car where I don't get tired after 2 hours period. I drive everyday alone , but on weekends with my family (6 people) pls recommend something. my current car Nexon has a jerky engine and everyone gets thrown around when I'm driving it little fast.
Isn't KTM 390 a lemon..? I have seen multiple videos of Shumi praising it and at the same time I have also seen a lot of people around me struggle with it. I thought he was fine with the unreliable machine. But now his statement suggests that he can't tolerate reliable machines. Now, I have questions.
Great episode..one of the Best so far. Recently I "changed" not "upgraded" my pulsar 180 bs6 to Honda Unicorn 160 because of relaxed riding position with raised commuterish handle bar. It solved the neck pain completely. I made a loss by selling it as it was only 3 years old. Whereas I kept my classic 350 bs3 as I have a lot of nostalgia associated with it. Took it thrice to sell her off but something somewhere stopped me. I even had tears in my eyes while I took her. It was than decided that She will be there. She turns 8 years in 2 months.❤
If someone is planning to buy a performance oriented premium car like an S5 or M340i second hand, what would be the ideal condition of the car that they should look for?
My first ride was my dad's 1987 bajaj super scooter which i rode for 2 years to college and thereafter my dad got me a pulsar 180 rode it for 4 years and thought of getting a bigger bike and back in 2013-14 i thought bigger bike means bigger CC of displacement and got myself a cruiser thunderbird 350 rode it for 6 years with all its vibrations and sold it off with a plan to get a bigger bike say the interceptor but things took a turn on life and im currently riding a suzuki access 125 which is my daily ride. The thing I'm emphasizing is test driving a bike is very important before making that big decision got two bikes and never test rode them and lost interest in my bikes quickly. Now almost 4 years of no bikes im itching to get one but not able to make my mind. I have checked FZ15, Dominar 400, Pulsar400, Interceptor650, Duke 390, Speed400 but im not able to make my mind and also i live in a tier 2 city. Being a lawyer I'm only interested now in weekend rides or occasional rides. I'm looking for something easy on pocket and reasonably reliable and in my mid30s and im unmarried 😅 any advise would be helpful
Disagreement with ABS: On my 18 SF FI, i have activated ABS a couple of times. Each time, it took the braking control out of my hands. Once, it activated on a tiny patch of gravel and remained active even on clear, dry road. It was so scary that I decided I wouldn't want this thing. I almost crashed on both occasions because of ABS. With pirelli tires, i tried and couldn't activate the ABS. Right now, I'm on good Michelins; not as good as pirelli's but I haven't activated ABS yet since the first tyre swap.

I was very surprised when Kartikeya mentioned people saying gaadi puraani ho gayi hai after just 3 years! We started considering that we'd need to buy a new car after our Chevy Cruze was 13 years and 8 months old & almost 250k km, and it felt like yesterday when we bought the beauty! My Ecosport was scratched at the roadside parking recently, and I was furious about it, and my father told me, calm down, be proud that your first scratch on vehicle came 3 years into the ownership and for no fault of yours.... That was the time when I realised it has been 3 years! And I still feel it's new!
Our family has a bit of a conundrum. We are proud owners of a 2014 Ford Figo (P) and in the 10 years of ownership, we’ve clocked *checks notes* 38000KM. The family is talking about an upgrade. Reason? The 4+1(4 occupants and 1 driver) setup of seating has become a hassle. But would it make more sense to run this Figo more often instead of buying new or do we upgrade? Please help. Hey Neeraj! Your Figo is barely in its teens! First - its resale value isn’t going to be more than 3 -4 Lakh. Second, any replacement up until the 12-15L mark (unless you go for base variants) isn’t going to be significantly better for 5. So, it finally comes down to how often would you travel 5 up? This "Going to showroom and experiencing your vehicle" ihas happened in my RE Classic purchase in Pune. I went to a dealer, and I confirmed they have vehicles I wanted to test drive, I drove one of them and then waited for next 15 mins to give me the next one, turns out they ignored me all the time as the test drive vehicle was not available and they didn't bother to tell me. I immediately raised a complain to RE CC and from next day, I started to get the call to explain and entertain me. They sent the bikes to my home (12 kms away) for test drive. Now, they treat me very seriously and everytime I called them after, they had never dropped my call. So, yeah, don't know why,but sometimes showroom people treat you differently for their own reasons.
Shumi likes his motorcycles so much that he wants to buy a pickup truck just to carry them. If cars were sentient then they would probably be seen outside his protesting. Jokes apart what would be the ideal odometer reading for household bs4 diesel car that might suggest it would be good to upgrade? For reference I have a Dzire VDI bs4 model with 78K km on it's odo, and I don't intend to upgrade it anytime soon unless really necessary because of the fuel prices alone. So how more km can I run it for till it's due for an upgrade or engine rework?
Hey TVM! With regular upkeep that would keep going until you just get bored of it. We’d use it for as long as it fit our needs. Emotions are a different matter.

My request is if you could do something like a science corner covering subjects like let’s say turbo charged vs NA engines wherein you could add why small downsized turbo charged engines are not as efficient as the manufactures claim to be..or something like engine layouts..might seem basic to some, but will be quite helpful for a lot others..😊

We have addressed this in a short @kunalrachcha8361. Basically, you don't need them but if you have to get one, stick with the first party ones and make sure that they are designed and bolted on properly.
Great episode! The importance of time vs money is bang on. I just think that it's emotional (the decision) and you being willing to live with the car or motorcycle even with its flaws because you love to drive it. But we change over time and so does our needs. So this comes in handy when we do feel like upgrading. Also, waiting for the next episode. That's a very interesting topic!
Hello!. I want a suggestion from you about upgrading my bike. I learn riding bike with my brother's (currently my brother still owns the bike but he has given to me) TVS Apache 2004v - without ABS (2018) in june 2022 and since that time I'm riding this bike as my daily commuter. In starting i enjoyed riding with it but now it doesn't excite me, sometimes i want to go fast and i try to do but when it reaches at 75-80kmph after that it feels like the bike doesn't have any power to go. I try to push more throttle but bike doesn't give anything. On the other hand i ride RE classic 350 which we has in my family but Classic feels more comfortable, really good throttle response(it reaches 80-85kmph in few minutes), more confident, much safer, everything is better but don't like the gearing of that bike. But after riding RE classic i get to know why people love this bike so much and i felt that same feeling and this feeling excites me, i had a smile on my while riding Classic. Yes i really enjoy riding classic 350. I'm not saying that I'm a classic/retro type bikes lover but i really enjoyed these RE qualities. So would you guys suggest me if i am going to upgrade my bikeor purchase my first bike, what kind of bike it should be?
We would suggest you get a whole bunch of test rides to see where your feelings lead you. Clearly you're looking for more performance but is the jump from 200/TVS to 350/RE the right one? You need more riding time on different machines, @beyonder_10

That point where you said better driver in a hatchback, I can relate on both sides. When I was showing off my VW DSG where I was always getting behind with a petrol Swift when I wasn't mature enough. Now I have a petrol Ertiga on which I can keep up with Turbo Diesels on highway just because I choose the right lane to avoid vehicles.
I recently bought my first bike, at the age of 41, a TVS Star City because I run 70 kms a day and my 2006 Dio wasn't all that fuel efficient. But 5-6 months into riding my bike, on Bengaluru roads, makes me realise I should have picked something more sportier, a Pulsar N160 perhaps. Sometimes it's just a compromise I suppose, till I can afford a faster bike. 😄 Also, if you guys could do maybe a small video, on riding equipment and helmets for everyday use that'd be lovely. I have a manual Honda amaze since 2018 and due to terrible traffic in Pune, was planning to buy/upgrade to a second car as EV. After this discussion- rethinking my decision.. My average run would be 150-200 KMs per week, would you guys recommend buying a small automatic petrol hatchback? Or I can still go for EV like Tata Tiago ?

I regularly hear from you that the apache rtr 160/200 are excellent machines. Can you please tell me how? Off course through a ride review! I'm looking for an aggressive bike, the first option is mt15 but my either of the parents can't sit. I like the pulsar 150 overall bt eveybody says there are quality issues, whether it's of mileage, engine reliability, etc. etc. On the other hand sp 160, it' s good bike but it doesn't give feel of sportiness specially in seating position. N160 is good but again being Bajaj, there is quality issue. If honda woud have made pulsar 150/n160 I would definitely buy either machine. Please help

I'm upgrading to a Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro (test drove it and I'm in love) from my Dominar 400. Is that too much of a jump?? I'm upgrading as I expect the Tiger to be much more comfortable in covering 800 km days on the highway.
Karthik you won't believe when I went to book my first car so called ' My First Ever Car " the tricks were so many and used as a weapon by many consultant but my decision and my opinion was concrete and remains as a constant and stood behind my convenience and at the end I managed to understand my senior consultant that what I want and what the car can give and that emerges as a electrolyte decision making and my perseverance remains unshattered an un tampered.
Somehow Honda doesn't help you feel emotional about it. It's very peaceful, enjoyable, serene and reliable. But not addictive. Not emotional. Unlike, RE.
In Delhi-NCR, the upgrading decision is taken out of our hands. Great city cars in running condition, the kind they don't make today, like the good old Ritz or the Gen. 1 Swift, are supposed to be upgraded just because they break the whimsical 10/15 yr rule.

I’ve inherited my dad's 2007 Honda City which is pushing to 17 years old this year! No matter what car comes into my family, this Honda always brings a smile to my face like nothing else can, and on a reliability front, it has never left me stranded. Mine is not even the vtec but the little things like, the sound and feel of shifting gears, the rev-happy and quiet engine, and the fact it’s teaching me car maintenance like no new car would, makes me want to keep it forever if I could.

TLDR; got 2019 rtr 160 4v without a doubt keeping it for couple of years without any worries
For me an upgrade is far fetched now. I have been learning to ride a bike with a past experience in riding scooty. I have a 2019 rtr 160 4v, bought second hand but in very good condition. 3 months in I don't think I have even mastered 20% of this machine's capability. I don't see any point in upgrade atleast for a year or more.
Even when I do, my younger brother would give a arm and leg to have this bike because it's in such a good condition and a good bike.
And moreover I am torn between what I like, I see the appeal in cruisers like RE, but I want machines which are fun to ride like dukes. So looks of retro and performance of a sport is what I want it seems 😂. Triumph might be reasonable choice but with no dealerships around 400kms, so not feasible.

43:07 Exactly what I did with the RE showroom that refused SM650 ride, I had the money and was going to pay the full amount but they judged me based on my appearance i.e. dark burnt skin as I was out on an adventure, unkempt hair, cheap clothes I have never bought clothes worth more than Rs. 2000 and still wear shirts that cost Rs. 100 from the local market.
Instead I bought my childhood dream bike with well known issues, I will get a harley or some other real cruiser later skipping RE.

I rode my Ducati scrambler (2015) for good 9 years, it was never my daily commuter but a motorcycle which I rode twice a month for weekend trips and maybe for one multiple day trip each year. Did in total mere 22k Kms. Most of us are not so lucky like you guys who can ride motorcycle to work, for work and live with those beautiful machines through out the day. We trouble finding time among our short weekends, among our weekly chores, among our fatherly duties and among our husband responsibilities. Still we promise ourselves that we would go for a ride tomorrow and then we trouble finding that tomorrow.
I have always had a tradition of touching my bike everyday giving it a kiss or a pelt whenever I leave home for work, it gave me a feeling of satisfaction that even when I am not riding it everyday, it’s always there for me waiting patiently.
One day after a 500kms ride, I felt like I wanted something new, felt like the Ducati would be better off in someone else’s hand. Suddenly felt that it was just not enough, So sold it and after reading, watching everything about every motorcycle, bought a Speed twin 1200. Funny enough, I stumbled upon you guys while I was doing all of that. Took your advice on buying a motorcycle which I wanted, understanding my needs, so I researched myself in the process. Shortlisted things that gave me happiness, pleasure and what would bring that smile every time I ride it. Budget being not an issue, it was a whole world to choose from but thought of keeping it realistic, of what purpose I had with my motorcycle, for which I will always find time however busy it becomes. Specification wise it was low end torque, a classic roadster and a motorcycle which would never feel old even after 15 years of its age, a motorcycle even my son would love to take to his college one day and ‘oat important, I never want my motorcycles to be overwhelming. So I went with triumph and Wow, what a motorcycle it has been, already rode 2000 kms in a week and it brings me a smile every time. So you may call that I got bored but for me it was an upgrade that would keep me engaged and bring me back to the thing I so dearly love.
Sometimes, even if you are aware that certain things would take all of your stress and give you that freedom, we just do not find enough reasons or time to do it. Hopefully my Triumph is the one for which I would not find reasons to ride but I just do. Happy Motorcyling!

I relate to what Shumi spoke about in the beginning on so many levels..
I have been riding a Honda Dio BS3 2014 for the past 8 years and 90,000 kms. And both of us have been through it all. I once have been the immature brat who twisted the throttle to the max to see how fast it can go, then I've gone through a phase where I took it to off-road trails even motorcycles shyed away from, I've toured on it, and done a lot of things. Then later, it suddenly dawned on me that I've been putting it through hell, that it doesn't deserve to be treated like that and decided to slow down and take good care of it.
But all the damage had already caught up to it by then. The headlight unit was hanging (which is a common issue in Dios), the suspension bushes were fried etc. etc.
But rather than selling it off and finding another scooter, I decided to take up the responsibility and live with it.
Even after I put it through hell, it has never created a situation of pain for me. Never broken down, has always been with me. Whenever I feel like crying, I take the Dio and go for a ride. It has taken me to college, then another college, and now takes me to my coaching institute clocking 50 kms a day. All of it, and never a complaint and never a dull moment. Still gives me a tank to tank mileage of 51 kms to a litre.
Since he is now around 10 years old, my parents are forcing me to sell it. I've thought about it as well. I've learned so much on it that I need to move on now.
I can ride at 80 and not have a shrill of adrenaline rush in my blood. I've gotten used to speed and the brakes and the tire sized and all limit me. But can't help myself to sell the thing. I can't convince my parents to let him stay. And I can't also understand if this emotion I have for it is momentary.

Aww man!! We feel that. If you think you will continue to use it - then keep it. But be real. If not - better that someone else gets to use it and keep it in good shape. 🤞🏽
@AnandA2155 I have the same feeling about my 2011 Honda Aviator. I dont put it through hell, but its been a reliable work horse, always fun to drive, never failed on me all this time. I did make some modifications including replacing thr old Halogen based heeadlight with OEM Led headlight that came with 2018 Aviator model before it was discontinued. Vehicles have life, i believe in that and probably not gonna sell this ever even if i buy a new one in future!

When you upgrade, sell your old beloved motorcycles to your friends at a bit cheaper price, that way you get to see them and ride them whenever you want. I did that with my last 3 bikes! 😉

Yamaha in my city still doesnt give test rides, they have tens for mt15s, r15s, fzs lined up for sale but not even a single bike for test ride. staff is not nice once u get ur bike handed over. When i decided to buy duke 250, i talked to ktm manager what my concerns are with my current bike (fz25) are, he said whatever concern u have if they are not fixed by the right ppl, u straight away talk to me, i'll get all ur issue fixed no matter what. KTM showroom had more test ride bikes then the show piece. loved the experience.

No clear plan yet, AD. We're waiting for NX dates from Honda and the larger machines, we're not convinced that our current formats are the way for those - we're working on this.
My first upgrade was for abs.
My Ritz was without abs and had a small accident on that, which could have been avoided if I had abs.
So when my wife started to drive and she took our son to school in that, I knew it was time to change.
It was a memorable 75k kms and i was still enjoying it but could not compromise on safety.

My 2016 Ford Figo is 200k kms run... What's the most logical solution to it? I still have a requirement of a diesel hatchback which are non existent... I'm going to drive 60+kms a day at least, If I plan to get the engine overhauled at Ford service centre they'll charge around a lakh rupees if I intend to sell it I'm getting offers that are ridiculously low under 1 lakh?!? What do I do?

When i got my rtr 200 on 2018, the only non negotiable feature for me was i wanted abs
I wanted matte black and fi etc and what not but back then abs was only available in 200 carb and so i decided to go carb over fi but still wanted abs
The bike was sold very sparingly to dealers so had to wait for a month or two and when it still wasnt an option in my small city, i went 350 kms to dehradun to buy the first rtr 200 abs that was in uttarakhand.
It was costly and yes fi was something that might have been better comp to carb but tbh i am glad i got abs
You use it once or twice but thats the money well spent, my younger brother had to panic brake twice snd and it wasnt for abs he could have lost control, that day i was able to finally justify my decision to everyone.
For city commute what do you think is the ideal engine capacity for a bike?
We don't think this is a useful way to think about commuters. if you just need a tool, a 125 is enough. If you want to have fun, you can choose a 1250 too
Just adding a couple of points on top of what Shumi said about lemons.
If you gonna take your vehicle offroad it’s gonna take a lot more maintenance. Bearings will will go bad faster , suspensions will need rebuild even if they are not leaking.
They are not lemon just taking a vehicle offroad regularly will take a toll on components and you will need to take care of them more frequently.

I have a GT650 and a VW Polo(first model) that i absolutely love. The Polo was my first car ever (2011) and it is in mint condition. The GT650 is a recent purchase (22/06/22) that has a customised British Racing Green tank with Gold stripes and a Cognac leather seat. But i don’t use them. Cos they are really hard to maintain. The Polo due to non availability of parts and the GT cos it’s just too beautiful to get it dirty.
For my use however i have the 2024 VStrom sx (Shumi’s recommendation) and the current gen i20 (2023) and now theres an Exter (2024) too and i’ve never been happier ❤

Hey, i am planning to purchase the bajaj pulsar n160 the latest version with usd forks but it no longer has oil cooling so i am bit worried i daily commute to clg and sometimes i ride a bit with hard acceleration please tell if i am making a good choice or should i look for something else (not at all interested in tvs and the budget is under 2 lakhs ) need motorinc advice
Cooling systems are there to do a job. If they're not needed, adding them won't add any advantage. We would not worry about this, @UA-camwatcher1x

I had a old 2011 Thunderbird which my Dad owned then , he rode it all the way to places like ladakh he has had all iconic machines like Yezdi , Bullet 500 the rx100 and settled on Thunderbird and a Passion pro
And just last year around april we decided to revirw our purchases ( financial crunches !) and dad just told me that we'd probably sell kt since it gave a milege of 28 Old uce stuff and also a lot of issues from fork issues to speedometer problems, valve timing tyres and what not a heck of issues to the extent where we spent about 6000 for every 2 months and still compromised reliability
So we decided to the call and sold it for a good amount snd got a 125 cc honda which was way more practical and reliable as well as efficient.
Now a year later i kinds regret that decision coz i always rode on much more powerful machines and 125 doesn't really match to standards and so we are deciding to buy a bike probably meteor 😂 for touring or so and thats it .

Alot of people also downgrade their big bike to something smaller. Ex. Selling off their africa Twins and GSs' to get himalayans for purposes of practicality rather than a financial angle.

A frequent car upgrade is one of the biggest wealth destroyer for most middle class Indians. I have a brezza for 7 years, and am totally fed up by its horrible nvh by now. Have to use anc earphones daily with it. But to get the same practicality, i may have to spend more than twice of what i had bought it then, so keeping it just because of its practicality & reliability. Don't want to destroy wealth unless it's absolutely necessary.

Hi Shumi and Karthik, loved this episode. I wanted to ask you both a question regarding upgrading. I own a Apache RTR 200 4V, the one that came out in 2016. I still love riding it and I do feel happy every time I use it, but wanted to know few suggestions of what bikes I should be looking at to upgrade? Looking at a different genre to make it interesting.
I havent driven 2 wheeler since I bought my first car, I know 2 wheeler not for me, I am a car guy. But my current vehicle I know its benefits but safety issue and highway drives calling me to upgrade. Very confused which one to upgrade, but my first car was smooth purchase had budget constraints so not much choice knew its for 3-4 years, now its more itching safety, comfort, good engine and features lots off, ....

For me, I was forced into an upgrade situation thanks to the NGT rule in NCR. I was more than happy with my 12 year old SX4 and had planned suspension upgrades. Unfortunately, the rule killed all those plans to keep the car as lokg as I can.
Sad to not be the first one here. But getting the all member access as soon as I find my job back. 😅

Have Brezza 2016 Diesel model. I am concerned about continuing it anymore as it is diesel. Need your thoughts on it .
Complaints of it are Hard Suspension apart from that it serves me in all the way it can. Need your advice on keeping this for 5 more years or is it wise to move on now for the alternate fuel option. Thanks.
I don't want to become a better driver. I just want a very very comfortable car where I don't get tired after 2 hours period. I drive everyday alone , but on weekends with my family (6 people) pls recommend something. my current car Nexon has a jerky engine and everyone gets thrown around when I'm driving it little fast.
Isn't KTM 390 a lemon..? I have seen multiple videos of Shumi praising it and at the same time I have also seen a lot of people around me struggle with it. I thought he was fine with the unreliable machine. But now his statement suggests that he can't tolerate reliable machines. Now, I have questions.

Recently I "changed" not "upgraded" my pulsar 180 bs6 to Honda Unicorn 160 because of relaxed riding position with raised commuterish handle bar. It solved the neck pain completely. I made a loss by selling it as it was only 3 years old. Whereas I kept my classic 350 bs3 as I have a lot of nostalgia associated with it. Took it thrice to sell her off but something somewhere stopped me. I even had tears in my eyes while I took her. It was than decided that She will be there. She turns 8 years in 2 months.❤

If someone is planning to buy a performance oriented premium car like an S5 or M340i second hand, what would be the ideal condition of the car that they should look for?
My first ride was my dad's 1987 bajaj super scooter which i rode for 2 years to college and thereafter my dad got me a pulsar 180 rode it for 4 years and thought of getting a bigger bike and back in 2013-14 i thought bigger bike means bigger CC of displacement and got myself a cruiser thunderbird 350 rode it for 6 years with all its vibrations and sold it off with a plan to get a bigger bike say the interceptor but things took a turn on life and im currently riding a suzuki access 125 which is my daily ride. The thing I'm emphasizing is test driving a bike is very important before making that big decision got two bikes and never test rode them and lost interest in my bikes quickly. Now almost 4 years of no bikes im itching to get one but not able to make my mind. I have checked FZ15, Dominar 400, Pulsar400, Interceptor650, Duke 390, Speed400 but im not able to make my mind and also i live in a tier 2 city. Being a lawyer I'm only interested now in weekend rides or occasional rides. I'm looking for something easy on pocket and reasonably reliable and in my mid30s and im unmarried 😅 any advise would be helpful

Disagreement with ABS:
On my 18 SF FI, i have activated ABS a couple of times. Each time, it took the braking control out of my hands. Once, it activated on a tiny patch of gravel and remained active even on clear, dry road.
It was so scary that I decided I wouldn't want this thing. I almost crashed on both occasions because of ABS.
With pirelli tires, i tried and couldn't activate the ABS. Right now, I'm on good Michelins; not as good as pirelli's but I haven't activated ABS yet since the first tyre swap.

Hi! Can someone elaborate on Kartikeya's point about diesel cars needing to be taken to highways and driven at particular speeds??
I was very surprised when Kartikeya mentioned people saying gaadi puraani ho gayi hai after just 3 years! We started considering that we'd need to buy a new car after our Chevy Cruze was 13 years and 8 months old & almost 250k km, and it felt like yesterday when we bought the beauty!
My Ecosport was scratched at the roadside parking recently, and I was furious about it, and my father told me, calm down, be proud that your first scratch on vehicle came 3 years into the ownership and for no fault of yours.... That was the time when I realised it has been 3 years! And I still feel it's new!

Our family has a bit of a conundrum. We are proud owners of a 2014 Ford Figo (P) and in the 10 years of ownership, we’ve clocked *checks notes* 38000KM. The family is talking about an upgrade. Reason? The 4+1(4 occupants and 1 driver) setup of seating has become a hassle. But would it make more sense to run this Figo more often instead of buying new or do we upgrade? Please help.

Hey Neeraj! Your Figo is barely in its teens! First - its resale value isn’t going to be more than 3 -4 Lakh. Second, any replacement up until the 12-15L mark (unless you go for base variants) isn’t going to be significantly better for 5. So, it finally comes down to how often would you travel 5 up?

This "Going to showroom and experiencing your vehicle" ihas happened in my RE Classic purchase in Pune. I went to a dealer, and I confirmed they have vehicles I wanted to test drive, I drove one of them and then waited for next 15 mins to give me the next one, turns out they ignored me all the time as the test drive vehicle was not available and they didn't bother to tell me. I immediately raised a complain to RE CC and from next day, I started to get the call to explain and entertain me. They sent the bikes to my home (12 kms away) for test drive. Now, they treat me very seriously and everytime I called them after, they had never dropped my call. So, yeah, don't know why,but sometimes showroom people treat you differently for their own reasons.

Jokes apart what would be the ideal odometer reading for household bs4 diesel car that might suggest it would be good to upgrade? For reference I have a Dzire VDI bs4 model with 78K km on it's odo, and I don't intend to upgrade it anytime soon unless really necessary because of the fuel prices alone. So how more km can I run it for till it's due for an upgrade or engine rework?
Hey TVM! With regular upkeep that would keep going until you just get bored of it. We’d use it for as long as it fit our needs. Emotions are a different matter.

My request is if you could do something like a science corner covering subjects like let’s say turbo charged vs NA engines wherein you could add why small downsized turbo charged engines are not as efficient as the manufactures claim to be..or something like engine layouts..might seem basic to some, but will be quite helpful for a lot others..😊

We have addressed this in a short @kunalrachcha8361. Basically, you don't need them but if you have to get one, stick with the first party ones and make sure that they are designed and bolted on properly.
Great episode! The importance of time vs money is bang on. I just think that it's emotional (the decision) and you being willing to live with the car or motorcycle even with its flaws because you love to drive it. But we change over time and so does our needs. So this comes in handy when we do feel like upgrading.

I want a suggestion from you about upgrading my bike.
I learn riding bike with my brother's (currently my brother still owns the bike but he has given to me) TVS Apache 2004v - without ABS (2018) in june 2022 and since that time I'm riding this bike as my daily commuter.
In starting i enjoyed riding with it but now it doesn't excite me, sometimes i want to go fast and i try to do but when it reaches at 75-80kmph after that it feels like the bike doesn't have any power to go. I try to push more throttle but bike doesn't give anything.
On the other hand i ride RE classic 350 which we has in my family but Classic feels more comfortable, really good throttle response(it reaches 80-85kmph in few minutes), more confident, much safer, everything is better but don't like the gearing of that bike. But after riding RE classic i get to know why people love this bike so much and i felt that same feeling and this feeling excites me, i had a smile on my while riding Classic.
Yes i really enjoy riding classic 350.
I'm not saying that I'm a classic/retro type bikes lover but i really enjoyed these RE qualities.
So would you guys suggest me if i am going to upgrade my bikeor purchase my first bike, what kind of bike it should be?
We would suggest you get a whole bunch of test rides to see where your feelings lead you. Clearly you're looking for more performance but is the jump from 200/TVS to 350/RE the right one? You need more riding time on different machines, @beyonder_10

That point where you said better driver in a hatchback, I can relate on both sides. When I was showing off my VW DSG where I was always getting behind with a petrol Swift when I wasn't mature enough. Now I have a petrol Ertiga on which I can keep up with Turbo Diesels on highway just because I choose the right lane to avoid vehicles.

I recently bought my first bike, at the age of 41, a TVS Star City because I run 70 kms a day and my 2006 Dio wasn't all that fuel efficient. But 5-6 months into riding my bike, on Bengaluru roads, makes me realise I should have picked something more sportier, a Pulsar N160 perhaps. Sometimes it's just a compromise I suppose, till I can afford a faster bike. 😄 Also, if you guys could do maybe a small video, on riding equipment and helmets for everyday use that'd be lovely. Thanks Karthik and Schumi for the great work you guys, and everyone at Motorinc, is doing. 👍🏼

My average run would be 150-200 KMs per week, would you guys recommend buying a small automatic petrol hatchback? Or I can still go for EV like Tata Tiago ?

Hi guys, have driven r15 v2 for last 12 years clocked 55k km in first 8 years have been driving car from last 4 as a major driver. My dream is hayabusa but it’s not happening yet but in meantime I am looking for daily commuter with pillion comfort. Options z650rs , Harley nightster special 975, or triumph 900 scram, triumph 850 sports. Which one will be more sensible purchase…..ps..liking triumph speed triple but it will be more selfish. Shouldn't you start with taking your partner to the dealers and asking for a two-up test ride? We would _not_ buy a bike we couldn't test with pillion if that was a core goal of the purchase, @Bharatwaala

I'm looking for an aggressive bike, the first option is mt15 but my either of the parents can't sit.
I like the pulsar 150 overall bt eveybody says there are quality issues, whether it's of mileage, engine reliability, etc. etc.
On the other hand sp 160, it' s good bike but it doesn't give feel of sportiness specially in seating position.
N160 is good but again being Bajaj, there is quality issue.
If honda woud have made pulsar 150/n160 I would definitely buy either machine.

Look at the N160 and the RTR 1604V. The Ns are far better quality than Bajaj used to make

I'm upgrading to a Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro (test drove it and I'm in love) from my Dominar 400. Is that too much of a jump?? I'm upgrading as I expect the Tiger to be much more comfortable in covering 800 km days on the highway.

Karthik you won't believe when I went to book my first car so called ' My First Ever Car " the tricks were so many and used as a weapon by many consultant but my decision and my opinion was concrete and remains as a constant and stood behind my convenience and at the end I managed to understand my senior consultant that what I want and what the car can give and that emerges as a electrolyte decision making and my perseverance remains unshattered an un tampered.

Somehow Honda doesn't help you feel emotional about it. It's very peaceful, enjoyable, serene and reliable. But not addictive. Not emotional. Unlike, RE.
Different emotions… some are more powerful. Some more subtle.
In Delhi-NCR, the upgrading decision is taken out of our hands. Great city cars in running condition, the kind they don't make today, like the good old Ritz or the Gen. 1 Swift, are supposed to be upgraded just because they break the whimsical 10/15 yr rule.
That’s really such a shame. Especially with the petrols.
