  • Trick plays in baseball, four video series. Trick plays that teams will use against you...or you can use. Baseball trick plays are not as common as trick plays in football because the rules of baseball have been written to avoid the bush league tricks that teams like to pull.
    We do NOT include the hidden ball trick, but just about any other trick used in baseball is in one of the four videos.
    Fake to third throw to first move
    Skunk in the Outfield play

    A trick I used to use was once I got to second and there was no one on third. I would get big lead offs, while watching for a pick from the catcher, pausing after the pitch and slowly walking back to second. (*Note: This usually worked later in the game when the catcher was getting tired.) If the catcher started lobbing the throw back to the pitcher, I would act like I was turning to go back, but take off for third as soon as the ball left the catchers hand. By the time the pitcher got it and threw it to third I was in safely, and in most cases he hurried the throw and threw it away. I got to sliding and coming up standing since 90 percent of time if he threw it he threw it away and I could easily score. Only once, because I did it to them earlier in the season, did the pitcher not throw to third. I looked at him and grinned, he yelled you're not getting it that easy again.

    When I was in 9/10 year old sports, we had a defensive play for runners on second and third with fewer than 2 outs. I was the catcher. Generally the runner on first takes off for second on the pitch. Our Second Baseman would shadow him like he was covering the bag, then our Short Stop would cheat forward a little bit, like he would if crashing for a bunt to the middle infield. I'd chuck it to the Short Stop to bait the runner on third that I was throwing all the way to second. If they did take off for home, the Short Stop, at a closer distance, threw it right back for the tag. Worked pretty well most of the time.

    I coached 12U rec softball, long ago. One opposing team was very athletic, well coached, and often stole home on the catcher pitcher exchange. I taught my 3rd baseman to shoulder up to the runner off third. The catcher would throw to 3rd baseman. The shortstop would backup the play a few feet behind 3rd base. If the runner broke home, we would usually hose her with our two short throws, rather than the usual two 60' throws. Subsequently, the runner would safely retreat back to 3rd. After a few of these exchanges, we'd call "Daffy" as in duck. The shortstop would backup right near 3rd base. The catcher would throw to the bag. The 3rd baseman would duck. It occasionally worked.

    I don't know if I consider this a trick play but I'll share it anyways. I use to tag sliding baserunners out usually with out tagging them. Just swipe real quickly then show the Ump the ball with confidence. If there's two outs you can even start running back to the dugout before the call is made. I remember my coach teaching me that one and it worked like a charm. I remember a kid bitching at the ump protesting the call haha.

      @@Rín-wín I don’t see it that way. You could say the same thing to a catcher that tries to frame a pitch. There’s also a rule called “neighborhood play” where a middle infielder can be excused from physically touching second base when turning a double play. It’s not so much a rule as it is leeway. Similar circumstances here. Also I would argue its more virtuous to have loyalty to your tribe or team anything else is sabotage.

    The empty hand fake throw was just used, fooled Justin Turner and got Cody Bellinger out. Ball hit leather but went over the fence. When the fielder faked the throw Turner ran back to first and passed Bellinger. Bellinger was then credited with an RBI single but caught out at second, for a ball that left the park.

    I don't think many youth leagues allow for a kid to yell "foul ball" or anything would be designed to trick a runner into making a bad decision. The same is true for coaches who yell "balk" to cause the pitcher to actually balk.
    If you're umpiring, don't allow for it. Warn players for poor sportsmanship and award the runner the proper base(s) for obstruction.

      @Texican Thanks. But I asked from the perspective of a High School Umpire. And it is against the rules to do this NFHS rules.
      The previous response explained it to me.
      But I agree with your answer... I'm just more used to the rules for HS and MS aged kids. Adults... should be responsible for themselves like you suggest. (It would be kinda Bush League for adults to do this... but you are still not wrong about whose fault it would be for falling for that kind of tactic.)
      But tons of the kids at the level of the NFHS rules set find themselves in their 1st or 2nd year in the sport. You might be surprised to see how many Seniors are playing the game in their 1st Year ever not just the Freshmen or 6th graders.

    • @brucemercer7753
      @brucemercer7753 5 років тому

      @Texican That was a million years ago. Society and the RULES of the game have been changed. The kids are softer and dumber. So are the parents with their feels and those kind of parents are the worst when it comes to lashing out at Coaches and Officials.
      (But I must say some of that Bad Parent/Fan behavior stuff has started getting dealt with in the past couple years. So progress is being attempted.)
      I Ref Football too. It seems like every year a Hit that would have been Legal when I started a decade ago is now 15 yards or maybe even an Ejection now. The less your scrubs keep their heads on a swivel the more likely someone else's overly-hyper kid is likely to directly affect the field position.

    • @brucemercer7753
      @brucemercer7753 5 років тому

      @Texican Wish we had Flag here for youth... we have an adult league for it. Go figure on that.
      Current ejection rule here for an ejection is a 3 or 4 game suspension. You miss 1/3 or more of your SEASON now if you get Ejected. And we tend to not let the schools get very big... so only a few schools can afford many of those types of players.

Guy on 2nd attempts to steal 3rd base ( have to run to about 5 feet from the base) while the guy on third stands on 3rd and yells to go back! If the catcher throws to 2nd, the guy on 3rd runs home and the guy that was on 2nd stays at 3rd. Worked one time but next game the catcher was smart enough to run to 3rd, fortunately the guy made it back to 2nd safe. Another play that worked for us was man on 2nd, short stop covers then runs back to position. Center field creeps toward 2nd as short heads back, then the pitcher turns and fires to center field for the tag. Last one is man on 3rd gets big leads after pitch to entire e the catcher. After 3 times pretend to fall down, if the catcher throws to 3rd run home.
