It s a secret that went to the grave with Rosa but if she was pregnant with Floyd's baby it could have been his wife with assistance from her family, could have been her devastated beau on finding out ,whoever it was I dont think they acted alone, especially if it was the wife

I think it was the 2 brothers working todether
The oldest lured her out by saying he wanted to talk to her about their baby and the youngest killed her
The oldest ones wife was his alibi and others covered up for the youngest but who really knows

    •  4 дні тому +1

This is a crime that I am positive will never , ever be solved. Over 100 years has passed since this happened. The people involved in this mystery have all died. This has become nothing but Folk lore and even if an investigation were opened to it , it would be rediclous to try. And no court of law would even be favorable to having this case tried. It is an unsolved mystery that will remain unsolved forever. Who would be alive to answer for this crime even if it were solved. Just another story

    • @DrGreenWolf
      @DrGreenWolf 3 дні тому +2

This is the most probable of all possibilities. Doubtful the younger brother killed her by himself; what would he have gained by her death? Unless, he was in love with his brother's wife.
The wife, although had a motive, couldn't have acted alone or with the younger brother unless she was unhappy and wished she had married the younger brother, in stead. Maybe they conspired to remove the older brother so they could be together? But that was the case, why kill Rosa?
I think it was Ballard, either with Floyd or friends, killed Rosa and framed Fred Stratton to protect his political future. He is the only one who benefits by killing Rosa. Can't understand how the prosecution missed that fact.

    • @jergar3953

@DrGreenWolf As this is near where my family is from and knowing the history there. If someone crossed someone's brother, the one with a violent streak would have no issue in dealing with his brothers problem or any other family member. Family stuck side by side to protect the family's interests, and considering they were politically entwined in the town, they would not have wanted a one night stand getting out. This would have looked horrible for a "God fearing man" in bible country. Most definitely was the Stratons and they did have motive.

@@TheAppalachianStoryteller Am new to the channel and the story was sad tale I believe that the new wife with a little effort had the brothers commit the murder to protect their family name. Rosa was told that her boyfriend wanted to talk to her and she was ambushed by the brothers the tool that was found if it was purchased the day before why crave a person's initial's so soon? That is an attempt at framing a person but sadly the case will never be solved. Also very mysterious: that even with such fear of being murdered, she went out alone. This seems to indicate that she went out to meet some trusted person. Could she have been lured into a death trap, with a message written to trick her into thinking that some trusted person wanted to talk?
Very strange: that the killer left the weapon on the ground. Was this initialed weapon left just to trick investigators into believing that someone with initials FS had done the crime? Why would the actual murderer leave a weapon with his initials carved into the handle? Makes it seem that the former boyfriend was probably innocent ...and was set up to appear guilty. And the people with interest in such a set up would have been members of that other family...with their political plans for their sons. The razor with the initials just seems like " too much evidence" In other words...planted.

I think that Fred Stratton was in love with Rosa and if the baby was his he would have married Rosa in a heartbeat. I think one or maybe even all three of the others ( at least the 2 brothers) killed her to protect the reputation in the church, community, and political ambitions of the oldest brother. It said the "deed" was done before he was married and he probably didn't find out she was pregnant until after he was married. That meant he could not marry her and make the baby legal so it would have caused disgrace which would have destroyed his political ambitions and high standing in the community.

I agree the Stallings have motives & means. Saying that Fred bought the weapon was too easy. Even the initials carved in the knife could have been a frame job. I gotta wonder if it was Mrs.Stallings? She could have worn her brother in laws boots, took his razor & the weapon. They said Rosa put up a big fight. Could it have been a big fight because it was 2 women? She had a lot of motive & she basically told on herself.

Check all their clothes for blood stains? Compare size of footprints to each of their feet/shoes? What about questioning potential witnesses to whoever bought the thingy that was 22:33 covered in blood left in the Laurels? Did any of these things get investigated back then? Just some thoughts.

I think Floyd Stollings did it as he found out that Rosa was pregnant, and he was a newly married man. I believe Rosa had a one-night love affair with Floyd and she told him that she was pregnant after he had gotten married. I believe she broke her relationship off with Fred Straton as she knew that was not the father of her child. Fred may have never known about her pregnancy until after she had passed. But on the other hand, maybe she had told him and that she confessed that it was not his and in a fit of rage he killed her despite saying he was at home. We will never know. Very good story and happy Saturday.

Or there was no affair with Stollings and she was r*ped. Could explain why she stopped socializing and stayed more close to home. On the snowy day, maybe she thought no one would be about and so safe to go for a walk?

She was found in the woods miles from anyone's home that may have played a part. There were footprints in the snow. Did they follow them to see where they came from and which way did they did they go when they left? That seems like the most important clue

    • @t-and-p
      @t-and-p 3 дні тому

It would be interesting to know if the multiple footprints were different (eg different size/ tread pattern/etc) or not. That's because multiple footprints can come from two scenarios - multiple people, or a really physical fight between two people (eg they're moving around a lot, meaning lots of footprints in the snow, all at weird angles as they grapple and fight).

The question that begs to be asked is, did Fred and Floyd have a personal gripe or trouble between their families, maybe something over this same girl? It sounds like the breakup, and lack of a reason for it, could be the key to it all.

I think that Floyd was just a willing accomplice in order to protect his brother's reputation and future aspirations. He may or may not have struck the fatal blows.
I think that Ballard decided that Rosa had to be eliminated and his wife and brother were in on it.

  • @bettyfeliciano7322

I’m tending to agree with Rusty. If I was to guess …… I’d say it was Floyd & his sister-in-law. Floyd didn’t want his brothers reputation tainted for having an affair & getting Rosa pregnant…….. and the sister-in- law wasn’t happy about the affair & the baby. So, they platted together to kill Rosa. But, Rosa fought hard to save herself………thus all of the tracks in the snow. JD, I just absolutely love your stories and your storytelling!!! You’re definitely No 1 in my book!! Blessings always & forever !!! 🙏😊❤️

It was likely the brother of the man she had an affair with.
The wife knew too much but not likely enough.
    She was a new wife.
Rosa broke up with Fred because she was in love with the other guy.
The other guy was seeing both women at the same time, had no intention of marrying Rosa.
Rosa was likely summoned/lured to her murder by the brother and wife because of the pregnancy.
There are no secrets in communities that small and so intertwined.
Why would a defense attorney not call witnesses if the brother truly had an alibi of being 20 miles away.
    Makes no sense.
    Rosa chose poorly.

New sub here. I live in the Piedmont area of North Carolina. I was wondering if you have ever thought about making a video about Tom Dula or as he is more well known, Dooley. Many years ago, we searched for his grave and did find it. It was as it was told, been vandalized by ‘tourists’ who had knocked off chunks of the tombstone on the left corner. Access has been cut off since that time. Years later, we tried again, and found his grave inaccessible, so we went looking for Laura’s grave. I believe we did find it, but it, also, is inaccessible only because it is on a hill in a cow pasture. It is separated by a white picket fence and, at that time looked well cared for. I worked with a girl who is related to Laura and she told me Laura was pregnant and that was the reason she was killed. This story fascinates and intrigues me as this took place not far from where I live and Tom was hanged at the depot in my city, Statesville.

My perssonal take on this story is first of all her boyfriend was totally innocent and he had nothing to do with Rosa's murder. Because he was madly in love with her and actually was heart broken due to their break up!
But the godly man of the community had a sexual relationship with Rosa and that unborned child that she was carrying at the time of her death was indeed his!
Chances are that she told him about this child and he wasn't prepared for it because it was probably his one night stand and he never expected that. Which his new wife later stated to the law man at that time. The rumors that spread about a quarrel between the husband and wife about Rosa was also true.
This was clealy a premeditated murder which was carried out by him, his brother, and his wife.. Having witnessed too many foot prints at the crime scene by her dad itself proves that she was brutally murdered by more than one person. The mallet with intials was his younger brother's who used it to struck her head open and the blade marks on her neck to cut her throat was used by his new wife out of vengeance and to finish her off quick.
But her lover himself played two main parts on that murder one he lured her into the murder scene by asking her to meet up during the dark where they could discuss about the unborned child. Because no women would leave her house in the dark to meet someone unless she knew that person personally or trust... So he took advantage of her trust and little that she knew it was her death call waiting to be murdered brutally. The other accomplices were his wife and younger brother who probably were hiding somewhere behind the trees or bushes when she came to see him and once there they came from bhind and attacked her while her lover stood there and acted as a lookout just incase while they were busy committing that murder....

JD, when you said, near the start, that "most men handled disagreements the old way, with gun powder & lead" you should have added the "old AMERICAN way" as nowhere else in the world did people resort to such use of guns, neither then or now, the way Americans do. It's definitely not something the Appalachian Scots-Irish immigrants brought with them from the UK but something developed in America that grew almost exponentially to Americans now owning mote guns than any other country in the world, & by a HUGE margin, to the point that it doesn't seem many realise that this just isn't the case elsewhere, in many European countries, spotting an armed Police Officer is unusual, even surprising, with the bulk of the population, easily 75%+, (not in the military, Police Force, farming etc) only experience of guns being air rifles at a fair, or game console controllers!!!!

Anyone who came from England or the continent would NOT have had guns. It’s an American idea that’s now got out of control. I’m 70 yrs old and from England I have never even seen a gun for real nor do I want to.
