    Jim Wendler's 531 has become a staple in strength training circles over the last decade. His follow up installment, Beyond 5 3 1, offers a ton of variations to the classic scheme as well as a more specialized strength specific approach that differs vastly from his original linear progression. Here, I review Joker Sets, First Set Last, Pyramids and weigh out how Beyond 531 compares to the original.

    For me, Beyond is about what you feel on the day.
    I run 5/3/1 simplest strength routine. Some days I feel really on it, and easily hit my 5+ day for 8 or so. When that happens, I usually add a joker set. If it still feels good, I will do first set last just to get more volume. On the 1+ days, I usually don't do first set last, but if I get 3+ reps, I may add 5lbs and do a joker, maybe 2. I think beyond just adds to choices about how you feel, rather than being stuck to the program.

It seems like it's more planned out and designed to teach people how to program using 531 as a template.

    Great overview although I think you may have read it too quickly. He states that joker sets should only be done when feeling very strong. I interpreted this and implied it into my own training by only doing the joker sets on one upper body lift and one lower body lift at a time. (Ex: jokers on squats and jokers on OHP)I tried doing jokers on all four lifts for the first week and realized it was not going to work out quickly.

    5/3/1 works because it is a variation of step loading/wave loading. Its better suited for intermediate/advance lifters imo because of this. Its basically linear progression in wave format. This is also why a person who has a training max of 600 will get much more out of a 75% set of 5 (450) than a person with a max of 300 (225). 5/3/1 can work if adhered to, but everyone thinks its too easy at first, and its meant to be like that. But 8 weeks from then, you’ve added poundages and you’re getting a better stimulus and are able to handle more volume. I think just understanding wave loading is something most people should understand and utilize.

    Excellent and comprehensive video. With regard to whether or not to do a Forever video, I for one would like to see it. I think it will address a lot of the concerns you brought up in this video. It could be valuable depending on who your audience is. For powerlifters, it's not super useful, but for the average gym lifter or someone who's an athlete (even recreational) in a different sport, it could be very useful, particularly the addition of programmed conditioning and the aspects of block periodization introduced with leaders/anchors. Also, there is precisely 1 UA-cam video about Forever, so lots of people considering buying the book could find your review video helpful when making that decision.
    Thoughts:
    Joker sets as a concept are kind of a mess (Wendler admits as such in Forever). That said, my understanding is that they are supposed to offer a sort of auto-regulation. You use them on days you feel great, skip them on days you don't, and don't overdo it. I think Wendler does a poor job here at giving guidance for the average lifter on how to decide when to use them and when not to.
    I completely agree with your critique at 10:00. I often get the sense (especially when reading Forever) that the recommendations are so broad that they're almost meaningless. However, one thing I find irritating is that everyone who reviews the original 5/3/1 program skips right over the supplemental and assistance work components, then complains it's low volume. At least with Beyond/Forever it's clear that these extra bits are mandatory (no more "I'm not doing jack shit" template).
    Also completely agree with you at 10:40. I realize that especially with the supplemental work it's not critical that it be a specific movement or specific intensity, and it's more about just getting some volume in...but it's easy to fuck up, particularly for the target demographic of this program. I know I fucked this up doing 5x10 deadlifts a few years ago and trying to understand why I wasn't recovering haha.
    13:45, yep. The branding/names kinda drive me crazy too. He does a better job in Forever of helping the reader choose which template would be best for them, but it's still very...basic. You're choosing just based off of a 1 paragraph synopsis of the program. Sometimes makes me feel like I'm a 14 year old looking up programs on bodybuilding.com or something.
    To me, the beauty of using the larger 5/3/1 system (the structure you mention at 9:30) as a general strength trainee (not a powerlifter), regardless of the specifics of the template is this. You have the main work that is prioritized above all else, and because the intensity is modest and progression is so slow, you should be able to continue to progress even if you're pushing your hypertrophy work or conditioning, or even while dieting down (to an extent). This allows you to do a quasi block periodization, where you might take 6 weeks, do no pr sets or jokers, and run tons of volume on supplemental and assistance work to drive hypertrophy without throwing your strength progress out the window. Then run a period with pr sets and jokers to simulate an intensification phase. All while keeping 1 foot in the general strength working range at all times.
    Additionally, you can dial up and down on the training max for each lift (not sure if this is in the books, read on the forum) to modulate fatigue and progress. Also, the supplemental work doesn't need to be identical for all lifts. For instance, I don't do volume deadlift work anymore, and use the deadlift "supplemental" slot for more squat volume.
    Hope this helps.

    I did the 5-3-1 a couple of years ago - with good results and I intend to go back to it end of this year,
    I wonder why you only focus on the 5-3-1 sets.
    In my experience (I did the BBB program) the 5-3-1 sets where the "recovery part". The 5 x 10 hypertrophy sets have been the ones that have been really demanding (for me)...
    It seems to me, that the "accessories" sets, are the main drivers of the program.

  • @leeg672
    @leeg672 8 місяців тому

    One of the greatest advantages of the basic 5-3-1 IS it's simplicity. I have 30+ yrs of lifting and competing under my belt and the basic 5-3-1 removes two of the biggest hurdles of most programs and routines and that is the mystery of "Auto-Regulation" and Overtraining... The Auto-regulation method is totally subjective and unreliable. The very thing that makes 5-3-1 so successful IS it's simplicity combined with Low volume and some Dorian Yates HIT style intensity. There's nothing subjective about it. It can be very demanding if it's done right. For me, the 4th week De-load is ALWAYS needed and I take FULL advantage of the recovery and growth factors that occurs during the De-load week. I only vary my programming if I hit a wall, get stagnant or training for a meet. I LOVE KNOWING WHAT IS EXPECTED OF ME BEFORE EACH W/O! I know my #'s 1 month out! I Love knowing the #'s I must hit. Unless illness or something tragic happens, all I have to do is show up and execute. -No wondering, making excuses and talking myself out of it on a bad day. ALSO, no days where I "Feel So Good" I say; "Hey, throw on another quarter, I feel good today"!! -that's just subjective BS! It will get you hurt and OVERTRAINED!! Less is more! Thx Jim!

    Been a fan for ages of you and finally invested in the book last week. Amazing by the way. Its the first book I've ever invested in and I am 37, so that's a testament.
    Just hit a wall on a basic LP A-B split I created. Mixed a few different ones by the end of it. Started Basic and added lifts as became stronger and gained better technique and needed more volume. Actually stuck on which one of your program's to move onto now? I created a custom built 5/3/1 BBB program using methods from the book for the time being, to dip my toe into 4 day splits.
    Really fancy trying either the Powerbuilder, bullmastiff, or 70s program next. I like the 4 day split now after 6-12 months of AB I like part of 1 main lift 1x a week.

    • @AlexanderBromley
      @AlexanderBromley  3 роки тому +1

      I recommend sticking with a split and moving between a few Base and Peak phases, really getting a handle on what longer term progress feels like, before moving to another split or program altogether. There's nothing wrong with experimenting, but you should feel like you have mastery over one method before jumping ship. Reset or start a different progression or move to a different rep threshold for a time. Play with the secondary movements. There's so much you can manipulate in one template.

    531 Forever is just different ways to string together the core percentages.
    Basically 531 is a collection of templates based on the following updated 531 skeleton
    Main work: 531 with amrap sets or 5s PRO which is sets of 5 all 3 weeks (same percentages, lower training max)
    Supplemental work: Do BBB, BBS, SSL or whatever.
    Assistance: Just that, do some pulls and other exercises to build the primary movements.
    Update TMs every 3 weeks, take a deload every 2 cycles.
    BBB: Do them at first set last percentages (or really any percentages).
    BBS: Do them at first set last percentages
    Widowmaker: Do one all out set at first set last percentages
    FSL: Do 5x5 at first set last percentages
    SSL: Do backdown at second set last percentages
    5x531: Do 5 sets at the third set percentages

It's really more of a collection of blogposts and stream-of-consciousness than an actual book (at $50 no less!)...it doesn't even have a table of contents, and it introduces more "advanced" variations before explaining the most basic ones. He also introduces more complicated branded lexicon (accumulation cycles = "leaders", realization = "anchors", being the most obvious. Jokers = heavy singles, "7th Week Protocol" = deload...).

      He has also come out with many new templates including the highly anticipated “Krypteia” program which Jim utilises with his school athletes.
      TLDR;
      Forever is a “simplified” version of block periodisation using the 531 scheme that people can follow easily and get results, nothing too extraordinary.

I consider myself kind of a beginning intermediate, have a 550 squat, 565 dead, 300 press, done a few Strongman comps and was ranked 7th in Atlantic Canada one year at 230lbs (it was an odd year). I guess I see these things like 531 being called intermediate programs and I just scratch my head. Maybe it has to do with who you lift with. The guys I compete against are beasts compared to me and they’re still not even at the top of the sport nationally. Then I see guys calling themselves intermediate doing 531 with only a portion of my strength and I’m like, is my view too high, or is theirs too low? Never would I call myself “advanced”

    I enjoy the 5/3/1 method, however eventually that heavy week becomes too much to recover from. My fix was to run the first 2 weeks as prescribed and then that heavy week is actually split into 2 weeks for recovery purposes. I do not need to add a deload week by doing this because I'm literally only training 2 times a week for those heavy singles then I can add tons of volume in after those heavy weights.

    I believe that my 'Sub-Optimal Position Training' (a conjugate method) is better, but I don't know how to present it to you. What, I believe, makes it better is two highly advanced, effective, and versatile rep schemes, both of which employ a strategy of doing an exercise with a degree of muscular fatigue then, over subsequent workouts reducing the amount of fatigue under which the exercise is done to realize a strength gain from having done it with the greater amount. I'm either deluded or I have created a truly great system of training the can be adapted to any lifting objective powerlifting (which I designed it for), bodybuilding, sport specific training, or just quality of life i.e. being stronger at whatever function you encounter in everyday life.

    Personally I'm not a fan of the joker set and FSL. I mean you need more heavy work with the main lifts, but you've already done an AMRAP at that point, which gives you an estimated 1RM, so why not just use a % of that to do backoff sets, like on your 5/5/5+ week, just use 75-80% of the estimated 1RM to do more 5's. Or use the same weight as you did for the AMRAP to do AMRAP-x rep sets, where x could be 2 or 3 or something. I do like Wendler's books though, kind of, at least I learned a lot from them...

      Let us say you are running 5/3/1 and you are in your second week, the 3 rep range week. After you have done your final work set with for 3+ reps, you continue to increase the weight by 5% or 10% until you can't hit the desired amount of reps (in this case 3 reps) anymore.

    At one point, you say that FSL the pyramid are a substitute for Boring But Big, which, if I understood correctly, is not how it's stated in the book. You do your assistance (e.g. BBB) on top (not instead) of FSL/Joker sets, and count FSL/J as a part of your "main" exercise that day.
    I think I have to re-read that part.
    Good video though!

      He specifically talks about FSL for multiple sets being an alternative to BBB (talks about it causing less severe doms), and talks about FSL multiple sets being an alternative to simply FSL, so by the distributive property.... lol. Even if it wasn't explicit, it makes no sense to follow up a 20 repper at 65% with a 5x10 that is supposed to progress over time. It wouldn't be tenable.

      @@AlexanderBromley The biggest thing in Forever - beyond the forest of new templates - is Wendler's introduction of the concept of leaders and anchors, which is really just volume driven hypertrophy phases followed by intensification phases (e.g. 2 cycles BBB without PR sets followed by 2 cycles of PR sets and 5x5 supplemental). Fair warning: the book is pretty badly written, it doesn't have a table of contents, there's no glossary, Wendler at certain parts doesn't take the time to explain concepts he's gone over in previous books, etc. There's a lot to bite into, but I'm not sure how much of it will be really training focused vs "Wendler really could have used an editor because I'm not even sure wtf he's trying to say here"

    Reviewing the 5/3/1 stuff is a minefield. Wendler has a fierce fanbase and any criticism is met with "but if you do this variation..." But eventually these versions get so far removed from the basic program that they are totally different programs.
    My own experience with 5/3/1 was that I got weaker until I added more squat days and added more volume on deadlifts while cutting the weekly AMRAP deadlifts. But at that point it isn't 5/3/1 anymore.

      I agree some of the Wendler fans do have some cultish type of behaviour, similar to Westsiders. But I feel like Wendler, over the years, has created more room and more ideas for personal adjustments, like the ones you have made to it. This is also what I went with and I do not really associate a lot with Wendler's fanbase. I just associate with his principles.
