- According to reports, Westminster City Hall ‘was scrambling’ on Thursday morning as officials hunted for Easter decorations, following backlash over their celebration of Ramadan.
On March 7, a light display celebrating Ramadan was switched on in London's Leicester Square.
The city's mayor, Sadiq Khan spoke before switching on the lights, saying the light display was about celebrating London's diversity.
This will be the second year the city has displayed Ramadan lights, after London became the first major city in Europe and the western world to have such a display in 2023, according to Khan.
Critics have argued that despite the celebration of London’s diversity, Easter had not been celebrated in the same way.
Alex Phillips hits out at the “constant erosion, dilution and kicking” of Christianity as Westminster Council hurries to put up Easter decorations after only celebrating Ramadan.
“What people are doing is cultural vandalism!”

As an atheist I celebrate Easter obviously not for religious reasons, but as part of my cultural tradition. Promoting Ramadan in a Christian capital is indeed cultural vandalism and should be banned as "it may hurt the feelings of sensitive minorities" such as the remaining indigenous British Londoners are.

Fortunately I live in the Westminster borough so I've now written to my MP, local councillors in Westminster City Council, and even the mayor's office to express my disgust. I was born and raised a christian so its a slap on my face to have to walk past those Ramadan lights on my way to work for this whole month that was Lent and now over Easter. If we let them get away with this, very soon they would demand that Ramadan be made a bank holiday as well. Its Culture erosion make no mistake about it
I remember Harvest Festival and taking food to the old folks at home. Anyone remember that?
In our church we still do, in addition we have local volunteers giving a free hot meal to the homeless or anyone in need each week. They also offer friendship and support.

I have no Islamic faith, but it's being shoved down our throats morning, noon, and night. I have no Christian faith either but the celebration now called Easter pre-dates Christianity as the Pagan festival of Eostre (which is where the bunnies and eggs come from - as well as the word oestrogen ) so it's deeply rooted in our culture.

There’s absolutely no evidence of the connection of Eostre and Easter, that was a conspiracy theory like many “pagan to Christian” false parallels. The bunny came from German Lutherans in the 1800s, the eggs come from Catholics abstaining from them during lent and having an abundant feast of them at Easter. Look it up. It just always makes Atheists feel better to continue celebrating holidays as cultural and not religious by not looking hypocritical and saying Christians stole this anyway. BBC had a documentary of pagan rooted holidays and retracted everything in the future once they didn’t do their research in using sources that had no evidence.

I totally totally agree I am sick of it EASTER has been took off the front of the boxes and put on the lid so as it's displayed you have to pick the box up before you can see the word EASTER it makes me very angry
What would I rather do:

ISLAM IS NOT A RACE, IT IS A RELIGION AND THEREFORE NOT ABOVE CRITICISM! Yes I am shouting, as it is mind blowing that some people do not get this! I learned about Islam in Religious Studies at school. That is a class in which you study religions around the world, not races.

Each EASTER our town takes a cross up on the moors to commemorate Christs death and resurrection, as part of our EASTER celebrations. This year our church was packed at various services from Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Our children in junior church had a wonderful time with crafts, singing and writing a beautiful prayer. Christianity is alive and thriving in our church and community.

I agree, this is serious now. The government are paralysed, sliding through until the election which they know they won’t win. Thus avoiding the big government decisions like enforcing our own culture in our own country.
