Mr. Buntu, played by John Kani, is convincing Sizwe Bansi, played by Winston Ntshona, to take the identity of a dead man as a way of escaping the apartheid-era government's arbitrary command that he return to his impoverished hometown. thanks god i went to school, maths was nice, english was nice, biology was nice,science was nice,but there is nothing that makes remember school, than doing plays, like sizwe banzi, sophiatown, saturday night at the palace, you name them the island....thanks for the good school days. coz this is what i'm doing in germany,doing plays with refugees, inspired by the greats,our grandfathers and fathers&mothers of south africa.love this country. how can i forget, bushman&lena, master harold&the boys.

Thank you so much for posting excerpts from this! Been looking all over for it. Had the privilege of seeing Kani and Ntshona (then much older) perform in a revival of the work at London's National Theater in 2007. A great experience.

I love the fact that Sizwe not only tells the entire story of his crime in his 'letter', but also signs it off 'Sizwe Bansi'. I think poor Sizwe and Buntu are going to get caught
