I think that's a big problem with a lot of creators that are having trouble growing. Like you said, "Spinning your wheels, and wasting your time". People automatically assume that an audience will be hooked onto whatever they make, when in reality, they lack an exciting story behind what they're vlogging about.

Love your special guest at 1:01:27, teach them to edit while they're young! Just watched the whole video, it was inspiring! I'm a retired wedding editor, just riding around the country side with my dog trying to give my grandkids something to remember us by. I really enjoyed your vlog, it refreshed my memory of what's really important, and that's content. I'm old school, which explains my long edits, but I keep current with Final Cut, and it gives me something to do with my time. I've been struggling with telling the story, mainly because I don't spend the planning stages like you mentioned up front. I kind of get out there and hit record and see what I have to work with at the end of the day. Well, that's going to change thanks to your tutorial. I appreciate it!

The story is KING. The footage, the camera angles (POV), the elements (surroundings) around the Vlog, the persona of the character/creator it’s all revolving around the story.. Casey says the story is king & the edit makes the story, quote, “Edit is everything”. - Casey Neistat
Thanks for making this video. Definitely helps!

Thank you for this video. I just watched it and took notes. Personally I teach hospitality management at the University of Arkansas. The pandemic pushed us to online instruction. I took that as an opportunity to take my students virtually to some wonderful hotels, restaurants, bars, etc. (that are open) all across the country. I've been struggling with engagement and creating content that is 'where my students are'. That is, in a form they are comfortable with. To me, that means lessons and lectures should be a series of stories told through video. As the world opens up, I am scheduling trips to destinations, resorts, festivals, etc. to illustrate (video) concepts and examples. So... again, thank you. This information is helping me with my content creation.

As someone who makes very structured, scripted and planned (and technical) videos, the idea of a Vlog has always scared me, but it's been the one thing that I really really want to do - but when I actually go to do it, I feel totally stupid. This video hands down has de-mystified the whole process. Thank you so much for the video Jeven. I've was watching your videos at least two years before I started my channel. This came into my feed at the right moment. I need to push myself to the next level and I think Vlogs or Vlog style could be the thing to do it. Thank. You.

Really appreciate you and your knowledgeable and easy-to-follow style. So many YT content creators are just way to hyper for me and to be honest, come across as that kid who is overly desperate to be "liked" or just plain narcissistic which immediately puts me off. That overly kinetic, rather ADD approach to educational tutorials also lends to missing the details and as storytellers we know that the devil is in the details, so thank you! I will absolutely check out your editing class and look forward to making my way through the rest of your content and keeping up with your visual storytelling journey. Cheers, Cat 😸

Thank you so much. You are an excellent teacher. I was bummed that the finished product wasn't at the end but I found it. We share the same mindset as to searching out adventure. I've been doing that for the last 7 years now that I've found the perfect mate... or did she find me? Butler Peak reminds me of our trip to Saddle Back Lookout above Downieville last year. I planned to get there before sunset to have dinner and enjoy the view. Ran into the same locked gate that you had but we were almost at the top. Set up the grill for the pork tenderloin, chairs and the USB bistro's. Marvelous time! Zero light pollution which means it got really dark :( Packed up, headed back and got lost. The JK has stock headlights. We did eventually find HWY 49 and I thought we were west of town. Nope, we were east. 30 minute dirt road trip turned into 90 minutes. Should have activated the Garmin. I am just starting out on the video side so we'll have to go back and capture it.
Thank you again for all your effort. You have really opened my eyes.

So I used to think that if a video is anything over 10 minutes, the creator is just using up the time for ads and create more watch-time hours. But now watching videos like this, I realized that if I can spend an hour watching Netflix, I should spend that time on a video like this instead. This video was exceptional. I've been looking for ways to tell a story in my videos for a long time. Yes, many videos out there talk about story-telling, but I did not know how to apply it to my own somewhat spontaneous content: hiking, backpacking, and the like. Until now, I just filmed along the way and strung the shots together to "craft" a story, but doing the research and planning never really came to my mind. This will truly make a difference in my future videos. I wonder how to create a story if all you have is different footage without planning ahead of time or what happens if you plan a hike to a location, but then something extraordinary happens along the way, and THAT becomes your climax in the video. All of it really just takes practice. Thanks again for your detailed videos. They truly help me become a better filmmaker myself. I'm working through your storytelling playlist right now.

Thank you so much. I've done vlogging for years but pretty much just threw everything into the final vlog so it's always been quite disjointed. I'm glad I found this video. I've already started thinking of new ideas. That's another thing I've struggled with. Ideas. Only so much you can do with a family vlog channel. I've even got myself an Insta360 Go 2 for b roll.

I was hoping for a presentation of the final video, all put together! Dang. Thank you for the invaluable information that I find on your channels every time. What I appreciate is the amount of info you cover, which is presented too quickly for me, a beginner, to absorb, however, there's the "replay" button where I can go over what you mentioned so I'd rather have a quick-moving video than a boring one! Thanks again for posting----I'm just starting to fly and will get into video editing. Great tips!

I'm a new UA-camr... in fact I learned to edit video with first UA-cam video so I'm not only new to UA-cam but to video in general. I have struggled to make my videos interesting to anyone outside of my family and friends and this video of yours has been the wakening I needed. I've been shooting everything and trying to make the story during the edit and that is soooo hard. Your guide here is just common sense and it makes me laugh at myself now for how I've been doing things. Thank you for this, I've really enjoyed learning about my new hobby and you just took me up one more notch! It's all about baby steps and getting a little better with each try. Love from Louisiana!
