Love the black-washing technique. Beautiful. It was a beautiful deck before, but I like the new version better. It actually makes the desk more of an antique.

I LOVE the way this piece turned out!! I don’t know why so many people are afraid to paint over wood pieces. Especially on this piece where you allowed the natural wood grain to show through. I always glean so much inspiration from your videos. Thanks for sharing! 🌸

I would have loved having your desk as it was in my home . I love antiques and you really got great deal on it . It looked like it was in great condition. Sorry but l am not a big fan of painted furniture but I know it is incredibly popular now so I hope you love it. Have a wonderful day.

I knew this would be a controversial video, but I never liked the color in this room and tried to like it for two years. That's too long, in my book, to not like a piece of furniture. I can always refinish it some day and go back, too. Furniture transformations are never final. Hope you have a lovely day, too! xoxo

My 1st thought was, "No, don't paint it! It's in perfect condition & those are hard to find!", but then again I understand wanting to change something u don't like too. The struggle is real for those of us who love & treasure antique/vintage pieces. For me, I suppose the decision to paint is easier if the piece already has issues. In fact, I'm trying to decide if I should paint or strip a piece now. I know I'll never be able to get that orginal color back, so I'm stuck!

Perhaps consider using an acrylic glaze to combine with your paint. You can control the opacity/ translucency and it won’t change the color of your paint. The advantage is that it will given you more open time aka working time before it dries. You can but it in the paint section of your hardware store.

I just did a greywash (I thought I made it up because I had never seen anyone do anything like it😄) on the end tables from the 50’s that I inherited from my Grandmother. They were just so brown in one of our living rooms that also has a brown baby grand. By just changing the color to grey, with some of the wood still peeking through, and adding an antiquing glaze over that, it made me love them again! I waxed them and now they should be good to go for another decade or two...or until I decide they need to be another color in the future. 😃 Paint. It has been literally life changing for me and I have changed the lives of others with my paintbrush as well.

Wax shoe polish is good as black wax too. ☺️ L0VE your channel. ❤️. I painted my kitchen cabinets (oak undertone) with 1 part chalkboard paint and 2 parts clear antiquing glaze, 4 years ago. I can see the grain come through, which is what I wanted. It took a long time to dry. Afterwards I used a furniture wax over it to seal it. It has held up pretty well. One particular handle that gets used alot, the paint has worn alot. I touch up with the blk shoe polish. Thank you for all your ideas!!

I loved it before, but I really love it after. I was never a fan of painted furniture until I bought an old side table at a resale shop that had some of the claw feet chewed. I decided to paint it black. I used a black paint from rethunk junk that allowed the wood to peak thru. Either it was made that way or I just didn't add enough. Either way, it came out amazing and I love it. I bought it in a Robin's egg blue and painted a vintage bed in out tiny guest room and it cemented my love of painted furniture. Now your desk will be even more treasured! xoxo

You gave this piece new life. It is lovely and definitely "more you." I think the wash simplified its look and made it richer. And looks so good paired with the lovely chair. I do think the hardware is probably solid brass (test with a magnet) and you could just buff it up with a brass polish to get the same look. So much is plated these days, but that desk came from an era when solid brass was often used. T!he desk is really beautiful

Just recently found your channel and love it! I have often heard you should not topcoat over wax because it needs to breathe. But I understand the dilemma of wanting the finish on the top to match the sides but wanting a stronger, more durable finish on the desktop. So my question is, how has the topcoat held up being over wax?

  • @bethmann3283
    @bethmann3283 3 роки тому +1

It really did turn out beautiful! But as a rule, wax is always last, you can't put a topcoat over wax, it won't have the paint to adhere to. It can't adhere to wax.

I love painted furniture, if it is done correctly..... Mmmmm define correctly....It is art so is there a correct way? Probably not. Just finished a buffet in white, farmhouse....Just to stark. I have dark wax but I think I should paint it in a creamy old white. The dark wax would show to many brush strokes and I have already waxed it. So, old white, if I can find any. Then wax again...... I guess. Mmmmm do I have to sand it? Because of the wax that is already on it? Mmmmmm. Love your desk, it turned out very nice.

You can check second hand/craigslist/thrift - remembering to look at the BONES of the chair, not necessarily the finished look, since the upholstery and the color or treatment on the wood can easily be changed - or you can view this post below, where I have some similar chairs linked at the very bottom that can be found at retail.

They’re dining room pieces that I’m using in my living room. The sideboard is being used for my TV. I’ve chalk painted a few things and I haven’t really enjoyed the look, but this technique looks great! My question is, what was that product you mentioned that you would use on the top of the desk? I thought you couldn’t put anything on top of wax? I’ll definitely need something to make the tops of my pieces more durable.

I have a desk and Ive wanted to paint it to and Ive been waiting because I couldn't decide what I wanted and its going to be my work desk to. I follow you but I have no doubt God said Kathy, you need to get your bedroom in order because we are remodeling and I have paper, books, etc on the floor. So glad I watched and I love the outcome. Perfect! I love this! I have a question for ya: I have a house of wood furniture that is already painted black (yes, everything is black lol!) I love the black, but it does impart a feeling of cold, perhaps too much, and I would like to increase the feeling of warmth. I love the idea of having the warm wood tones show through, but to strip all my furniture down and black wash, that would be a mountain of work for me. I'm wondering if I might be able to short cut this, by taking super duper fine grit sand paper, and lightly sanding the centers of drawers, just enough to let a little wood show through, and then waxing it with dark wax? Wondering if anybody has any advice to offer, I would appreciate it very much, thank you.

When applying a faux finish to make it look old, think a lot the wear patterns. Which areas of the desk would be rubbed through use and touching? Chalk paint was a mistake, because of its’ structure. You would have been better off creating a glaze. You can buy the clear glaze medium at Lowe’s or Home Depot. Then you mix it with regular paint until you get the opacity you desire. Why don’t you do a buff of the wax? It’s part of the technique

I love painted furniture but I don't think I could have touched those drawer fronts. That being said, it IS your desk. Black washing is a little too uncertain for me. Sandi

Thank you for your thoughts. Having it fit better in the design of our room was important to me, and I'm really happy with how it turned out! :)

I apologize, that's something we're trying to fix!

I know this is an older comment, but I'm trying to circle back around to let people know that if you un-subscribe and re-subscribe, you should be able to get notifications. There was a glitch from an older video that we accidentally marked as "made for children", and so even though the setting is now fixed, some people still can't click the bell depending on when they subscribed! Sorry for the extra step, but hopefully that helps you get our notifications going forward!

I typically love painted furniture over wood grain, but, sorry, not this time. At. All. That wood was beautiful, especially with the lighter inlaid pieces.

I'm sorry I feel you have just ruined a perfectly lovely desk. Normally I like what you do and to be honest you really likingit did not come across on your vlog. What you were saying and your expression didn't match up x

One of the things I love about design is that there are so many different styles and viewpoints! I can appreciate yours, but I do really love how the desk turned out! At first I wasn't really loving the navy hue, but the color has turned even darker since it has had a few days to cure, and it's lovely!
