+It's-a me Megatron. "I thought the whole point of Metal Sonic was to be an evil Sonic that was supposed to rival him?" yea, this whole redundancy issue is why the idea of shadow as an anti-hero rival never appealed to me, it's like, we already have metal sonic to fill in the arch-rival role, he represents everything sonic isn't and everything sonic dislikes, while in shadow's case, we're always told he and sonic have clashing ideologies, but we're never shown this so it comes off as forced in my opinion, especially since the megaman X series showed off how two protagonists with differing ideologies can actually work together.
+ali movla Ooh that's a really good point, Scourge and Sonic actually do have clashing ideals. Shadow has never been an interesting character (SA2 is arguably the exception).
I see Shadow as the grey area between Sonic and Scourge, while Sonic and Scourge outright disagree with each other Shadow and Sonic are somewhat on the same page but not quite.
At the time Scourge was created, Metal Sonic was in a single game very few people played and wouldn't be seen again for 6 years. Scourge also only had one early appearance, but became more reoccurring later. If you asked someone who Sonic's rival was, most people would answer "Knuckles."
Personally, i think this issue decent, i mean this is just the beginning of the Ian Flynn era, obviously it wouldn't be great right of the bat. The writing is miles better than of the Ken Penders era, however the story is still a bit confusing at some parts, a bit jumpy between Sonic and Scourge. I personally like Scourge more than Shadow in the comics because the way they evolve Evil Sonic more to it's own character and not just some random opposite of Sonic. Anyways this just what i think of this issue and can't wait for you to read the later ones, especially Issue #179, the story gets more impactful from there IMO.

Hey, I actually got to this part yesterday! I started the comics way before but the fact you started these Archie Comics videos at the same point I was makes for a pretty cool coincidence !
What do ya know. The comic that Knight seems to like the most was also the first one he read that was written by Ian Flynn. Also while I've been praising Flynn throughout the comments of these videos I feel he needs some slack in the first few issues where he was head writer. Ken Penders did a lot of damage to the comics before being replaced by Flynn, so Flynn basically is starting his job by trying to write good stories, WHILE cleaning up the mess Penders left behind. I'm not a writer but I imagine that that couldn't have been easy. Also I personally always imagined Bean having a voice that was a mix of Woody Woodpecker and Donald Duck.
You seem to at least be acknowledging the glimmers of promise that they tried to dredge up from beneath the waters during this period, even if it's not your preferred style. Thanks for being a bit fairer this time around.
00:00 I legit remember this cover when i read Archie comics in high school back during the 15th anniversary. Good times I was looking forward to your reaction to Scrouge!

Oh goodness she was the worst thing ever. I was 11. So I’m going to blinded by nostalgia most definitely. But I’m glad to see you liked this better than the other ones!!
This issue was... decent, at least the art was 50/50, i see that Ken Penders wasn't the artist. But the plot is confusing, there's so many thing happening in the same time, first the hooligans (but no Fang), then pre-Scroge (i don't like the name "evil Sonic" so i call him like that), etc.
I always feel mixed about Scourge as a character, as Anti-Sonic, he was just a dumb evil Sonic without much with it. As Scourge they tried to make that silly concept work on a serious context, they even give Scourge a sappy backstory to justify why he is evil, even though the universe he comes from was always meant to be an evil version of the characters without much of a reason and doesn't explain why everyone else in that universe is evil either, only Scourge. In the end, Scourge is kind of like a generic recolor that hype itself more than it is. It might be the laziest and stupid character in anything official Sonic related. And spoilers, his Super Form literally looks like Coldsteel.
You will find out his motives in the next issues. They're interesting and half-assed relatable to sonic's personality. You have to read both their encounter and their re-match when sonic beforehand almost became like scourge due to sad circumstances. The quotes he says are very clever during the fight. Also read super scourge transformation a dozen of chapters later
6:08 ....Bean literally just referenced the Japanese version of Super Mario Sunshine when you get a shine... fuck I need to read these comics (this era at least)
If it helps, the comic does touch a bit on Scourge's past in a mini comic strip called "Father and Son" (or something like that). It's not the best but the talk in it between two people are quite interesting.
Yes, Sonic should always be 15 and Tails should always be 8. The Sonic characters don't have to age. It's like Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy ect. They just keep living forever and ever to tell new stories, for new generations. Please do continue to read these comics. It's a lot funnier with voices. The dramatic tone makes it all the better too.
*I think* Scourge tried to absorb the Master Emerald energy and go super but in order to stop him, the old echidna shattered the Master Emerald so the energy absorption was interrupted. However Scourge still managed to drain some Chaos energy which turned him green like the emerald.
