Hey guys, hope you all had a wonderful Easter holiday. Today I wanted to share some things I learned while writing my first novel. Please let me know what are some things YOU learned writing your own books!
I love how clear your English is, especially how you pronounce the 't' sound in words like 'letter' instead of the less clear 'ledder' pronunciation. Very very easy to understand you thank you.
I've written 12 drafts of my first book, "Vinterkrig", which is a swedish fantasy novel about a woman who must defend her city from a large monster invasion, and a younger son who starts a rebellion against his father, a ruthless tyrant, and his brother, a madman. I'm really proud of it now, but still se its faults. I definitely agree that writing is rewriting.

I like how you described the feeling of hating your editing up to the point of go living on some isolated island.... It makes sense actually. (atleast it does to *me* )
First sentence is important. But it means nothing if the next paragraph, and the next page, are garbage. So don't stress too much over the first sentence, because it's only part of the story. If you know what you're doing with your writing, you'll be able to come up with a creative opening paragraph, eventually. If you can't, it probably means either your story or your ability are lacking. Both will improve with time and refinement.
This is good info. And thanks again for not bouncing all over the place like most of the people who post these type videos; not to mention cuss like they're drunk. You avoid these pitfalls and that's a good thing!
Was an interesting insight into an authors life. Great video! I really love when characters in books or movies have certain mannerism, it just makes it more relatable. Or seemingly "boring" or "common" situations/dialogs between the characters. Many modern movies or books dont take their time anymore to tell stories. Few questions i have now... 1. Do you sometimes write several storylines at once like branches? Like write one week one story and the following week a differenr version? And then decide what you will use? 2. Is every author a grammar/writting nazi? Hehehe 3. What is your mbti? Are most authors introverts? 4. How do you prevent yourself from using repeating writting patterns? As our daily used words for communication is often limited. Then then Then after after then

I really dislike the term first draft. I like to call it the first working draft. Because much like you it usually takes me at least three or for write throughs before I'm at what I can finally start working into my second draft. P.s. I've been trying to find a youtuber to take me on a tour of Vienna...
With my current draft of a contemporary queer romance I knew the title even before I started writing it like that instant spark [i did end up changing the preposition, but the overall idea has remained the same.] With my urban fantasy book, I came up with 3 different titles and ended up hating them so now I'm just calling it "urban fantasy book" :DD
I am SO a panster!! I am a good researcher, but I cannot stand to outline a book too much. It makes sick of my project. It can mean more editing, yeah, but it's just the way my brain works. I am on the third, and I think final, draft of my first novel. Is yours out yet? Where can I find it?
I dont think the first draft is a pile of trash hahahaha, it's just a compilation of raw feelings and thoughts. BTW you produce super good content. Subscribed!
The feeling when you think of a book title and find out it's already there. I know it doesn't matter, many books have the same names but... UGH!! The uniqueness is gone!!

Your videos are informative and refreshing! I did subscribe. But I have a question - in this video you said a scene should do 3 things, advance character, move plot forward, & enhance the setting. What does enhance the setting mean? Thanks!
I looked for your book online, it's not there. If it didn't get picked up by a trad publisher, send it to a professional editor and publish it yourself as an ebook and paperback (Createspace is popular for the latter).
Pick the old ones back up and just add one thing to them and put them away. Do that over and over until one stands out.. If you're a good writer, your ideas will be good. Don't try to finish them, just add to them..
Hm, your planning method sounds like the total opposite of what I do XD I might write down certain key points (they might change though as the story grows) and some ideas just so I don't forget them. But really planning it out just doesn't work for me. If I "know" too much about the story before I even start writing I will get bored and most likely not finish it^^
I think while this approach works for some, not planning your novel will end up working against the quality of your writing. That is if you are considering to publish it professionally. The reader would actually pick up on the feeling that the author does not know where the story is going, and you'd have to resort to very convenient (sometimes unbelievable) devices to resolve conflicts within the narrative.
@@@MissTasseled Uhm, no, that's not what I meant. I know where my stories are going - I know the start and the ending. But writing a whole book takes so much time that during that time I will get new ideas for the middle part or subplots so I add characters, backstories, relationships, places, events. Basically, my characters/stories are not fully grown/complete when I start writing, they mature during the writing process. The ending rarely changes so I know all the time where I need to end up. But plotting out everything beforehand makes me feel like I already told the story and am then just rewriting the same thing again. Why would I tell the same story twice? I hope that makes sense somehow... It's a bit hard to explain.
Okay, how does this sound: my book is about these scientists who go to mars to invent AI then when they get back it observes the world and how humans act and becomes self centered and greedy and then it starts going insane that kind of thing so it can be better than every one. It’s my first book and I’m 13 so it isn’t that good but how does it sound
Its really good ! I am now 18 , when I was 13 , I was writing a fan fiction of the story of a crow which puts stones inside a water tank to drink that ... 😅
If you think of it as “All my writing is my Darling and some of it has to be killed”. You may understand the core message a bit better. As you rework one aspect, another may no longer work, and may need to be cut or rewritten. “Your darlings” doesn’t just mean favourite parts, it’s things you are hung up on, that may not be serving the best interest of the story in its current form. As expressed in the video, with some clever writing it can still have a place. Do you really think changing the story, the core of the book, around single character that you think is funny is better than just cutting that character? Maybe In certain situations, but often it’s not worth it. Kill your darlings, cut the fat, get rid, or rework things that you don’t need. *This is just the theory, George R.R. Martin likes lots of feast description, even though they don’t add to the plot.... so, yeah.
yapdog not really my intent to be offensive or anything sorry, I thought your original comment was a rejection of the expression because you’d rather retool your story for certain aspects, rather than just using the concept.

Some of those descriptions are filled with so much feeling, i love it xd

I'm writing my first book and locations in it are set in cities I have been to. Google maps are amazing tool to help set a scene in story. :)

I don't know what program you write with, I am new to your channel. Just wanted to say Scrivener has the corkboard function.

Never kill your darlings. They're the part of the story that move you. Rebuild the story around them.
