Anyone else notice the really cool thing with the music fading into different versions of each other based on what's going on? I imagine it's not much more than muting a few channels, but still, this on an NES game, and before LucasArts "pioneered" the idea the idea with Monkey Island 2 on the PC. Hell, it was a big deal in the last generation when it became fairly standard, but this is from 1990 :D
Rescue: The Embassy Mission should be commended for trying something different and succeeding: it’s excellent, but with only one mission, the game lacks any real long-term playability.
Rescue: The Embassy Mission was apparently pretty successful in Europe, on one of the computers I believe. There's also one other game with a similar theme called S.W.A.T. That one only came out in Japan though, and it's unfortunately super buggy...
I agree. It was a game I rented on occasion when nothing else was available. Even then I remember wishing there was more than one mission, or something to give it some depth, even if I didn't know what that meant at the time. Looking back, it's a pretty amazing game for the NES.
Well, if you play like that... I mean in the nes era a lot of games would be rentals. Even the Mega Man games can be beat in less than 30 mins. Mario, Castlevania 1 and 3 et al must be beat in one sitting due to a lack of continue option. At least this game took the liberty of basically letting you play 3 mini games in one.
...Is this literally the first game ever with use of dynamic music? One of my childhood favorites. Totally forgot about the music kicking into full gear when out in the open.
Wow, awesome. Brings back so many memories. I really love the "sneaking" phase where the music keeps quieting down when you hide, then it's louder as you break for it... And also the quiet of the sniper phase, really fun.
What is the purpose of spending all that time getting the first three dudes into position for sniping if Ron can just storm into the building alone and murder everybody with ease in face-to-face combat?
NintendoComplete is really boss at this. It’s not as easy to win on the highest difficulty level and hardest mission. You basically need everyone, snipers need to take out as many baddies as they can to ease going into the building. The fact that he got all snipers into position and didn’t lose one is quite a feat in-of-itself for this game. The fact that Ron didn’t get shot is also quite impressive, it probably helped that he eliminated some of the baddies with the snipers before going in.
Played this at my grandparents house in the early 90s. I remember failing a lot… especially when rappelling down that building and making Ron go splat.
Yeah, stealth, sneaking, concealment, sniping, ingress through rappelling, 3rd person shooting, sometimes it looks like first person shooting, not shooting hostages. Did it go anything else ahead of its time?
I remember this game as a kid. I don't think I ever got past 5:00 from this game. I remember playing up till shooting the windows. It's crazy, I felt like I spent so much time playing it but only could get 5 minutes into the game, wow.
At first I could not figure out how to climb down the wall on the rope and always fell to my doom. Then I learned you have to press down then up really quick.
I remember having this video game at like 5 or 6 why my parents would buy me such a violent shooting game at that age is beyond me 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 maybe it was on clearance or something lol they didn't know much English back then maybe ...... IDK lol lmao
What the fuck ever. I had this game growing up and on that difficulty ONE bullet kills you. Those guys in the building and the spotlights don't give you 3 or 4 shots. I've somersaulted through enough spotlights and you don't get far.
Yeah, even though it's just the one mission you get to try it with a couple of different light patterns, try to keep everybody alive, lower difficulties have less enemies and actually show up on the radar in the building... it's not like most players can just buy the game and do what Complete here just did.
Not sure why this came up as a recommendation in 2024. However this is just a port of Hostages from The Amiga 500 which came out 2 years earlier in 1988. I agree that the game was brilliant and way ahead of it’s time but it’s the Amiga original version that should be the most fondly remembered. I recognised it straight away by the music.
From a technical standpoint, this game was great. Very innovative. It set the stage for games like Rainbow Six. Though that is kind of where it ends for the positives. The game isn't exactly fun when looking at the sum of its parts. I enjoyed it as a kid, but it is a frustrating game and has low replayability.
Just bought this game today. Never owned it before but have always been intrigued by the screenshots and overall ad that was featured in the pamphlet that was handed out to attendees from the 1990 Nintendo World Championships. That said, this game was waaaaaay ahead of its time as it seems to have more in common with modern games than NES. Kemco just lacked the technology for their true visions.
Originally a french video game, based on the GIGN techniques. GIGN is a french spécial unity dedicated to fast interventions when terrorism and/or hostages are involved.

Well, not to mention that this is a direct port of a 1988 Amiga game that originally used the effect

I remember it being just the right difficulty as a kid trying to win by not losing any swat guys or hostages and killing all the terrorists.
Fair assessment.
Give it up for the sdkt doe.

the best rainbow 6 seige gameplay ive seen yet

It’s quite remarkable that they managed to get this on a system built for Super Mario Bros.
Ron's a fuckin beast. Busts in through a window, straight up kills 37 men in 4½ minutes.
always loved the music from this game.
Wow, the nostalgia!! I played this when I was probably 4 years old lol EDIT: I messed up my age. I said 8 before.
Even the game soundtrack is nostalgic
This game was way ahead of it's time.

I loved this game to death as a kid. It was such a cool experience.
Is it me or does this guy look like Cobra Commander in that outfit?
Love that game! Too bad we didn't get a Snes version, with more levels and maybe even characters to choose from.
The original is in 16 bits, from the Commodore Amiga.
Very unique mix of styles, and that "out of hiding" theme is still on my ipod. Good stuff!
Moral of the story: Don’t fucks wit Ron.

Just remembered about this game. And last time I’ve played it was in early 90s. Awesome music and game design. Game felt so real and intense.
So basically this game was "Rainbow Six" before "Rainbow Six" was a thing.
Loved playing this game as a kid! Looks like they based it a bit on the Iranian embassy siege in London in 1980
Yeah, they probably did, as it was, in my eyes, the first time a Special Forces Unit had been witnessed live, during an active mission, on television.
The music brings me back. I had a love hate relationship with this game. At the time it was so freakin hard to beat
The music is this game is fuckin off the hook.
Rainbow Six' grand daddy.
As a kid I didn't know this game was so short, because many times I barely made it inside and got killed almost instantly
I LOVED this game and it is solely responsible for me still playing FPS 30 years later
As a kid, I used the hum the sneaking soundtrack every time I would pretend I was on a stealth mission.
Couldve just sent in RON the killing machine and left the rest of the team back at base, playing NES. Used to love this game
At first I could not figure out how to climb down the wall on the rope and always fell to my doom.
Then I learned you have to press down then up really quick.
Facts u a true gamer it took me a minute to figure that out this game is definitely top 10
I remember having this video game at like 5 or 6 why my parents would buy me such a violent shooting game at that age is beyond me 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 maybe it was on clearance or something lol they didn't know much English back then maybe ...... IDK lol lmao

Tell me another game that lets you play as an entire team of Cobra Commanders
This was a great weekend rental in 90
I could never get good at this game. Kudos.
Ron is some kind of neural net processor; a learning computer
Now we know what Ron Swanson used to do for a living 😂
What is the control of roll to pass quickly to the spotlight
Good game, but this is probably one of the shortest games on the NES.

Still have my copy of this on NES. The music is great. I learned part of it on bass guitar a few years back.
The game didn't last a half hour. Can you imagine the fake outrage if this came out today at full price🤣🤣😅
Is Ron Jesus Christ?
I have this game, was very confused until I watched this video.
I'm glad it helped then :) these old games don't do a good job of explaining themselves like newer ones do!
Loren Burns is my go to girl for happiness when I am feeling down and blue.
Damn, this game is hardcore with the stomach exploding close range shotgun blasts.
My older brother borrowed this game when we were kids, but I never noticed that. Kemco must have snuck that past NOA censors.
I had him this game

Don't fuck with Ron..
This game was ahead of its time, and still fun. Great video!
HOSTAGES for Amiga ... BEST VERSION ever
From a technical standpoint, this game was great. Very innovative. It set the stage for games like Rainbow Six. Though that is kind of where it ends for the positives. The game isn't exactly fun when looking at the sum of its parts. I enjoyed it as a kid, but it is a frustrating game and has low replayability.
undeerrated as hell. I love this game...in short bursts :)
TheDemoniusX I am greatly indeared and it's great to see you!
Took me FOREVER to figure out what this game was called. Wow to find out its a 10 minute game...
Damn Ron
It was basically the NES version of rainbow six and not at all bad considering it’s for an 8-bit system.
This looks like an 1 by 1 clone of Hostages, but with worse graphics.
Loved this game. Totally forgot all about it. Amazing seeing it again
This game was amazing. Loved it.
wow.... i had forgotten the game but remembered the catchy intro music
Played this game before I don't like the sound when you get killed its scary
i remember getting this game and spy vs spy for christmas one year, i really didn't know how to play either game, hated them both
The game was too short. Games were expensive then as well. I felt sad i paid £25 for it.
Jogo a frente do seu tempo.
Music sounds much better in the Amiga version. Also, the Famicom version uses the game's original title: "Hostages - The Rescue Mission".
Consummate. Proud.

One of my favorite games growing up! I 'members!
Same here
Counter-Terrorists Win
Original composer of the music is Charles Callet. Check the Amiga version.
underrated game
Jogaço
Esse é o vô do SWAT
Interesting the mission was nicknamed Jupiter and the bin laden raid was called Neptune spear
C64 Hostages
I still have the original game
Can't believe I remember the music to this...
This game really tried to do something different.
My first "FPS" game, never looked back. What a gem.
Memories. One of my favorite games growing up

I thought I was doing something wrong because the game was so short. Ended up losing it, no idea what happened.
Who was da guy in blue??
Hostage
or Ron
Great music and it reminds me a lot of another great Kemco NES game, Shadowgate.
this game needs a remake
Nice beating it on Jupiter Commander. I've done that once and it took forever.
Michael J Fox must be their sniper
Rainbow Six's Grandpa
