I'm from Iran and I believe politeness is a very important part of our culture. I visit Japan as my first foreign travel destination and guess what? I fell in love with Japanese culture. I've lived in Japan for few years and traveled there any chance I find. I know I'm not the only one feel this way. World is beautiful and life is short become sure to visit Japan not only for 1 week, plan a relaxed trip and try to somehow experience local life style.

Japanese people are considered to be polite but their behavior actually are worthy of praise. The action that they had taken after the earthquake had happened was very wonderful.

みんなが自分の仕事に誇りを持って、笑顔を絶やさず、お客様に気持よく過ごしていただこうという意識が感じられる。これこそ本当のプロフェッショナルな仕事への姿勢だと思う。
そして、その立ち居振る舞いは、単なる外見的な「きれい」を超える、にじみ出る馥郁たる美しさにつながって、大和撫子の美しさにつながっているんだろうと思う。

I have actually seen these attitudes from the locals. I was privileged to live in Aomori prefecture for 2 years and 10 months. I love the well mannered Japanese people. I want to go back someday. Thanks for this video.

Hibari Misora became a popular singer and a screen player who carried everything before one in Japan at 12 years old (1949).
Thereafter, she keeps taking an active part as a top rank singer in Japan.
She begins to deteriorate the sickness in the latter half in her forties.
She kept singing without allowing the sickness to cure to schedule the concert tour and the play performance that turned round the Japanese whole country.
However, the sickness will deteriorate further during the concert tour, and it be urgent hospitalized. She was hospitalized about six months and recuperated home at the following.
That was not made public at the people though her sickness was in a considerably serious state.
After to some degree the recovery, she recorded the new song, and started the preparation for the Tokyo Dome stadium completion commemoration performance scheduled next year.
The ambulance also was standing by the doctor and easy treatment tools and outside in her waiting room when Tokyo Dome performed.
She has the foot disease, and whenever walking, it seems to distort the expression by acute pain.
She finished singing 39 songs, left the runway of about 100 meters while waving to the spectator, took the ambulance while holding in the son afterwards, and went directly to the hospital.
Her sickness has not improved after Tokyo Dome performs, and the state of the foot cannot also gone up the stairs of one step. However, her song was alive and well.
She did the appearance of the television and the work of the performance of single-engined etc. while seeing the condition of the physical condition. However, it took a rest whenever one was sung, and breath was straightened.
Having sung is this "Kawa no nagare no youni"(release in January, 1989) in those days

Nothing out of ordinary or spectacular that you would not find in the US. Keep in mind almost all of these were customer service people, they've to win over customers hence being extra polite. Same as you'd find in any typical restaurants or shopping malls across America.
I have never seen smiles of the workers at MacDonald's and airports in the US.
Whether if they are faking or not. I prefer them putting on a smile before me then not. It's not like we are friends and I invite them to my home.

I don't agree with any comments below that criticize the Japanese or their culture except for one event, and I don't know why they do it. They select one man, every year, I think, and they make him run butt nekked down a path. The rest of the guys try to catch him and touch him.
OK, every culture has their "thing", but to say Japanese are cruel inside (understandable, only if your Dad was at war with them), can not be condoned.
I will not criticize the Japanese. They are smart, they pulled themselves out of Fukushima, and have always been wealthy. What more do you want, from a successful country. Oh yeah, they are also one of the strongest economies out there.
