Nick's Guide to fixing centering on Pocketknife blades

  • Today, a quick video talking about my four favorite strategies for fixing pocketknife blade centering:
    1) Disassembly
    2) Adjusting the pivot torque
    3) Re-tightening with the blade at 90º
    4) Wedging the blade during reassembly
But remember, sometimes, knives are just poorly made, and centering just isn't gonna happen. Also, the knife is by Blue Ridge knives, not Bark River. I can't talk.

Nick, your a knife saver. My CRKT M16-01Z came from the factory with a really sticky pivot. After allowing appropriate time to let it break in, if that happened to the problem, the problem was still there. So I got myself some oil took the knife apart oil the nylon washers and now it's good to go. The only problem is that in the disassembly and reassembly my knife got very off-centered somehow. I I was getting frustrated and was ready to call the manufacturer when I saw your video. I tried your 90-degree trick and boom perfect centering. Thanks again Nick

This video was very helpful. I was able to fix a blade centering problem on my Kershaw Dividend using the wedge method and loosening the pivot and scale screws then re-tightening. I had the knife apart multiple times flipping the washers over in every possible combination and I couldn't get it perfect until I did this method.

I have tried these tweeks in the past and find them futile, once you start using the knife the parts will once again settle back to their most stable position and centering is lost. Your best bet is to try and handpick a sample with good centering out of the box. Yes Benchmade I am looking at you.

Agreed there, you can only keep a turd polished for so long. But a bit of blue loctite is a beautiful thing to help lock it in as long as possible.

Kyle Schaan agree with this. I can center my rajah 2 and open and close it many times and it stays there. Only a few light chops and it goes way off into the liner. Somehow something is off unfortunately sending to the states overseas for warranty work is not cheap and I can't trust cold steel to send me faulty again. Sigh

Thanks for the video Nick! I took my Fox knives Tur 528 apart for cleaning and a little oil. I have had the thing apart about six times since and can't get the centering right for some reason, I've tried everything. After I watched this video I did the pry trick. Now it is almost perfect, just a little of but almost perfect. I can live with that. Thanks for the tips. Yesterday I took my spyderco mantra apart for cleaning and put it back together and the centering was perfect, first time. Gotta love spyderco.

This worked for my Spyderco Rubicon 2. either the pins were bent a tiny bit or the holes in the liners were not lined up perfectly but the slight twist (I believe) caused the blade to be significantly off center with the proper torque on the pivot pin. loosening the screws and then tightening them with the blade half open solved the problem. Thanks for posting this video.

Thanks, Nick!! Your video here got my "OCT 06" (I'm guessing that's the blade manufacture date -- my knife collector/knife addict uncle gave me this one for Christmas many years back, and it seems like it was around then, I know before 2008, and it has been my daily carry for field work in very dirty & harsh conditions from 2011 to today) Kershaw 1670TBLKST (looks like maybe "Tanto Blur?" -- it has the 50/50 blade, 1/2 sheep's foot, 1/2 angular straight edge) working like new again!!!! My main problem, which spurred me to fix my knife, was that the blade had only been springing open about 40 to 50% rotation for about the past year. I had become tired of manually completing the blade opening with a flick of the wrist every single time I was using it -- that's a little dangerous, too, as I think about it. I opened my knife up (meaning, disassembly) and it was just PACKED with soil and grass and crud -- I felt pretty certain upon discovery that the opening issue was likely just due to all the crap that had accumulated inside; I carefully inspected the torsion bar, pivot washers, etc. I cleaned EVERYTHING thoroughly with warm, soapy water, then applied some penetrating oil in appropriate places, then white lithium grease in those other key places. I then reassembled, using a few UA-cam videos on that knife, specifically, as education. I was having trouble achieving the right balance of (1) proper opening action, (2) minimal blade play, and (3) closed blade centering (and, really, prioritized in that order). I watched this other video by another user first on blade centering ( ua-cam.com/video/gz28BrMc9l0/v-deo.html ) and it helped -- only slightly. My very next video was this one, Nick, and within 10 minutes I had my 14-year old Kershaw working just like new with PERFECT action, ZERO significant blade play (there will always be SOME measurable amount, no matter how minute/tiny -- just the mechanics of a folding blade), and PERFECTLY CENTERED when closed (of course, when open, too, but it's when closed that you can see the degree of centering). You have a brilliant skill, Nick!! Thanks for sharing it with us in your videos (I watched another of yours, too, in the course of this little project)!

    • @dirtrider88
      @dirtrider88 3 роки тому +1

i took my brand new knife apart because i wanted a smoother opening action. cleaned it all up and aplied white lithium grease to all rubbing parts. the action was horrible after tightening it up and had to have the pivot screw almost falling out to get the same action it had when i took it out of the package. i took it all apart, cleaned it all up and this time i used lube made for yo-yos. now it works better than new. i would take it back apart and clean off all white lithium grease and use some sort of yoyo lube. the lube i used is yomega brain lube but i dont think you can buy it anymore.

I just got an expensive PM 2 Sprint run and was upset to see the blade way over on the liner. Adjusting the pivot didn’t help, but after disassembly and cleaning I tweaked the 4 scale screws and that did it, pulled the blade to dead center. I tightened each screw randomly and after many openings the blade hasn’t moved. Thanks for the tip, had no idea the scale screws could affect centering!

  • @abc456f

Need to try these techniques on my spyderco Shaman. Blade is off center towards the clip side. I'm waiting on a replacement pivot screw. I was able to disassemble the knife's show side but when I tried to unscrew the clip side pivot screw it wouldn't budge. Tried heating it up and using a boker/Wiha stubby driver that you can get a lot of torque on but it still wouldn't move. In my effort I ended up stripping the T8 pivot screw. I then tried using a T9 and that stripped it even more. Was ready to send it to spyderco. In a rare instance of ingenuity on my part, I hammered a T10 bit into the screw and was then able to unscrew it. I have no idea why it was so impossibly tight, there was no obvious thread locker on the screw.

Hi Nick and thanks for the video.
I have the Fallkniven PXL in Ivory Micata and it bothers me that my blade is offcenter.
It came second hand and disassembled and no matter how many different ways I assemble it the blade is off to one side. I've thought about sending it back to Fallkniven but just didn't want to risk it getting lost or confiscated on it's return to the UK. We have some strange laws right now!!
I am also unsure of the best way to sharpen this blade without messing it up as the stainless 3G laminate powder steel has a HRC of 62.
These two things means mine just stays in the draw most of the time.
Great video and thanks for showing, I'll give some of your ideas a try when I next get some time.

So I found this interesting, & maybe someone can help me with this?
I just got my first Spyderco today, a Tenacious off Amazon.
I wanted to change the pocket clip for tip-up carry, so I did, & afterwards I noticed the blade centering was significantly off.
So I watched a couple videos on how to fix this, including this one, & after following all the steps nothing was working.
It became frustrating enough after over an hour that I resigned myself to returning the knife, & I was feeling really bummed while I changed the pocket clip back to its original position.
Then I noticed it: the blade centering was almost perfect after putting the pocket clip back in factory position!
I had trouble believing this at first, but I again tried adjusting the pocket clip screws, & they were clearly having a positive effect on the blade centering.
So my question is, is this normal at all? I've decided I'm going to just keep the knife since it fixed the problem (not to mention that I now realize I can access & open the blade more easily with the factory tip-down position). I just thought it was weird that this is what fixed it, & I haven't heard mention of it anywhere in blade centering videos I've found so far.
Thanks for reading all this! 😀

Wiha 75985 is the torx pen.
Wiha 75992 is the full kit.
It's a smaller bit size and interchangeable with few drivers. But it's sturdy.

Have a knife problem? Find Batman! lol
Seriously, I just bought a blue G-10 Manix 2 that I'd been drooling over for months, only to find the blade a bit off center when I unboxed it. Annoying at this price point but I doubt Sal and Eric would send out a warped s110v blade so I'm hopeful your tips will correct it. I'm planning on a partial disassembly to clean and lube then upgrade the ball cage to Flytanium copper anyway... pray for me Nick! lol

Thanks for the video but sadly nothing worked to make the Ganzo Firebird FH11 to stop rubbing against the scales after trying for more than 1h, not worthy to be in my collection →🗑

Would it be wrong to send a knife back because of this

I have several benchmade knives and have no problem with any of them. I have to say they are at the youngest 2 years old and i keep hearing that lately their QC is starting to suck which bothers me. my newest benchmade has no problems and i bought it nib in the back of a local gun shop hidden behind bags of idc what because i saw knives and moved the bags and there sat a few models brand new discontinued BM knives and thw one i had to get was the first production mini Rukus. I had wanted that knife since it came out and before i knew they were limited they were all gone and i couldnt bring myself to pay $400+ after market price. it was marked for $230 talked they guy down to $200 flat. to me that knife out of any is and will probably always be my grail shelf queen above any other knife i own two or three times the price of it. butter smooth opening, no play, perfectly centered, and feels great in the hand even the it looks blocky. none of the hardware is through the liners either. i hear thats a big problem with BM nowadays which again sucks but no single one of us can talk them into better QC sadly..

The right way is get a machinist's straightedge and make the frame halves straight.

There's another trick to push up with the right side and pull down with the left with the screws loose

    • @f22shift
      @f22shift 7 років тому

Also wanted to mention another trick which I used. I loosened everything and 90 deg blade. I would first tighten the pivot to wear there is no blade play and it's centered when inspecting. Then I would slowly screw in the scale screws keeping an eye of the blade when it's closed. Some of the screws would knock it off center. Maybe some kind of warping. So I wouldn't tighten them all the way right just use lock tite. And slowly work my way to the last farthest scale screw and only screw in enough to not make it off.
This was in some cheap titanium Chinese knife.

it is not excuse for bad centering. cheap civivis and bestechs are always perfectly centered, and are 50 usd knives.

I think some of this stuff has been given overdue relevance by people, like me, who spend more time talking about knives than using them. There are many. I can admit it.
