- Do you feel drained after going to a networking event (even ones that you enjoy)? Would you rather curl up with a book than go to a loud concert? Do you prefer intimate dinners with friends instead of going to big parties? If so, then you're probably an introvert. In America, 30-50% of people are introverts, and that includes me.
The problem with being an introvert is that you're living in an extrovert's world. Both business and American culture value the loud, bold, and talkative over the quiet and reflective.
This means you're probably expected to be in more meetings, events, and small talk situations then you'd like. And that's exhausting. So to help you thrive, here are three things you should do to manage your energy better:
1. Give yourself alone, quiet time to think. Despite the corporate world's bias towards group think, open floor plans, and brainstorms - introverts perform better and get their best ideas when they're solo.
2. Schedule breaks following big meetings. Introverts are more sensitive and easily stimulated by not only people but sound. If you're at a conference, presenting in a meeting, or participating in a brainstorm, consciously choose to build in downtime so you can recharge. I always clear my calendar of meetings the day after a big speaking engagement.
3. Communicate your boundaries early. Because they're more observant and reflective, introverts tend to be highly empathetic and keenly aware of others' needs. Often introverts put others' needs before theirs which can lead to resentment, which can lead to passive-aggressive behavior. Practice saying, "no," sooner rather than later. You may feel guilty or uncomfortable with it at first, but you'll find that this serves everyone the best.
Thank you for these tips, and the amazing reminder how much I need quiet after a stimulating event. Being on the internet is very stimulating! Need to set a timer and go outside for a break. How do you get alone time with your husband home?
Africa is a continent not a country. Love your glasses.
