    Mario asks:
    "Hi Don, I am a worship team member at my local Hispanic church in Houston and I have concerns about the health of the worship of my church. How do I deal with a worship leader that seems to be doing everything wrong, from picking bad English songs that more than half the congregation doesn't understand and does not motivate them to sing? He places worship members into instruments that have no experience playing and a very unorganized rehearsals that seem to be only a waste of time. I have spoken to my leader about all of these issues and he doesn't seem to admit there is a problem. Sometimes I feel I could do better in organizing a team musically due to my professional music studies because I am passionate about it. Every time I bring up the issues with the pastor, though, all they say is "submit to your leader." How can I submit to a worship leader that is unqualified, and that is in charge of a group that is full of problems and doesn't seem to admit it?"

    I love the way you handled this question Don. the one thing I would add to Mario is this: pray for your worship team leader that God would bless him, inspire him, and also give him the skills to lead practices efficiently. that God would give him the wisdom to handle the intricacies of choosing a song catalog that fits the congregation. Also, pray that God would show you how you can support that growth in him. Before you go to speak to him about these things, pray God would guide your words that you would speak His will clearly, and pray that God would open his heart that he would hear you.
    As a band leader of a small band in a small church I know when I have had issues with members of my band, I have prayed for wisdom for me, and for God to open their mind and heart before I have confronted them about style or arriving to practice on time or anything like that. Any time I as a leader need to ask anyone to change something about their contributions, I pray God would give them courage to do the same for me should I need it.

    Sometimes you are a more qualified musician than your leader but you have to be humble. Part of being on a team is learning to work together. We cannot place ourselves above others. Help the group to grow together so that we can get to the same place.

    Thank you so much Don Moen! God Bless...👍What u said touched my heart...
    Submit to your leader. It's easy to leave the church and go to another place where people appreciate you! But it's hard to stay and serve! You are right... maybe God is testing us, and maybe God has bigger plans for us... Thank You! ❤

    Dear Minister Don....I’m SO glad I found your channel! What a blessing! I’ve been using your music in church choir and worship team scenarios since 1985...at Palm Baptist Church in Riverside Cali. That’s where I cut my teeth as a choir director/worship leader. Under pastor Don Parker. All these years later my wife and I are still serving in this capacity...but now in North Dakota. I so appreciate your no nonsense perspectives on these great questions! Wow...I’m forwarding your vids to my team members....not because there are problems presently, but because your answers can stave off these issues. Thank you for all these years of beautiful,powerful,anointed music....and now, thru UA-cam....your awesome insights! God Bless you dear brother 🙏🏻🎼. Steve and a Nancy Kuykendall

    So appreciate this topic Don. As an adult leader in our youth group I help lead the worship. And it can be very frustrating from this perspective as well. I appreciate the perspective brought up by this question and I will say the leader has to be excited to have that kind of input and passion from one of his/her members. Even if there are feelings of insecurity he or she will eventually appreciate the input. If any of my youth approach me I try to receive all comments or criticisms and make use of them.

    I remember, I met a guitar player and a drummer and completed them to a band (played bass and keys). It was perfect and relaxed until the leader has the "great idea" to add a piano player plus a chord guitar player.
    Both were pretty good, but it became stressful. I noticed, how hard it was to manage these people and how every gig became painful. Before I got damage, I decided to leave, because it was impossible to change theyr behaviour and how they did it unorganized and chaotic.
    It makes no sense, to be earlier, when two of us are late.

    The problem I’ve encountered is that the person with skills is viewed as an existential threat. The younger generation is content to be where they are and they have no desire whatsoever to learn anything more than the four chords they know, which covers the entire repetoire of Bethel songs. At this point, I’d rather go to a home church that has no music at all.

  • @davidshearer567

    EXCELLENT! Thank you for tackling a tough question. I lived through a similar situation. I was asked to play guitar at my church. I immediately, and clearly stated that I don't play by ear or read music, but that I was willing to sit down and learn the songs during the week and be ready for practice on Saturday and Sunday morning worship. The guy in charge of worship at the time was a semi-pro guitarist and didn't give us (the band) any homework. Often whole songs were swapped out or changed keys without warning. Of course, he also wanted to play some complicated music. After a while he was replaced. The second worship director asked for help and made an effort to give out homework on time but often keys changed at the last moment anyway. I ended up stepping down both times claiming incompetence. I didn't mind stepping up or even dealing with stage fright, but I did feel jerked around after practicing everything wrong all week, every week. Thank you for saying that, that is not acceptable… God Bless you!

      Feel you bro.
      If this issue keeps on happening then just learn all the family chords instead of practicing it on one specific key. Take it as a chance of improving yourself as a musician and preventing unwillingness. Think about it, it can boost you big time :)

    • @jonasaras
      @jonasaras 5 років тому

      Perhaps music isn’t your thing. It is a difficult undertaking even for those who are skilled. They continue to spend countless hours to play at the level they’re at. Why do you feel entitled to do much less?

    • @jonasaras
      @jonasaras 4 роки тому

      You've stated that you don't play by ear, and you don't read music. Why does that not equate to "I'm not a musician"? By any sane definition that IS incompetence.

    If there is a big problem with the team leadership, bring it up to the elders of the church. Have a meeting with them and the pastor. If it causes a riff, then I might look for another church or at least discontinue that ministry. If they don't handle it well find a fellowship with better character. Pastor is leading, yet he himself is only a baby as described in the Corinthians.

      Hey, Kaushik! First off, I am not Mr. Don, but I will try to answer your question based on my experience as a worship leader. Coming from a third world country (the Philippines) we've had plenty worship leaders that work outside of the church to fill their stomachs and keep the roofs above their heads. Playing outside to feed your family is not a problem at all. As long as they keep Christ the center of their hearts, God's got them. I hope this answered your question. Stay awesome and unstoppable, God bless!

    It’s the anointing that breaks the yoke not the worship team. If you’re in a dead church GET OUT. Get under the anointing asap NO ONE is going to make it the coming time without the anointing for such a time as this.

    Good points, however, never advise someone to leave the church. You should never leave the church just because you disagree with the leaders. God will put you there for a reason to work on some things in you, like be patient, and you could pray for the leaders. Therefore, if you go to another church, they'll be something else that you're not going to like. Stay put, until the Lord leads you.

    Poss probs w/ letter: racism? opposition to English. attitude of superiority? coveting another's position? I heard nothing about any heresy or bad thing done by the worship leader. Solution is Galatians 2:20-21. Go read it if U don't know it.

    • @vj_salud
      @vj_salud 5 років тому +1

      We don't know the real truth. What we know is base on the letter only. You might forget that there are Christian all over the world that aren't using English as there first/formal/official language which makes it difficult for the team and congregation likewise, it is not their heart language. There is also an issue of translated songs, western music. These issues are very delicate and need to be addressed. We need a sensitive leader, not a dictator. Not every worship leader and every church have the quality and qualification, esp small churches. Some even can't play or tone deaf, lack of personnel or people who are gifted, less number of attendees forces the existing members to take on a position or ministry that they are gifted in. Let alone the power play and church politics which exist in most of the churches all over the world.
