  • I did not bother to check this HHR transmission oil pan for leaks. It just needs replacing as you may see. I go old school on the gasket though... this has always worked best for me.

    Thank you this was really helpful. I hesitate to take it to Dealership because they change to much and every time after getting it back, it has never failed something always happens 2 weeks after or they don't replace things correctly.
    Maybe because they think I am a dump female. I use to change my transmission oil and all on my jeep.
    Thanks again.

      You are wise to find a good local independent shop to do it. Don't want to bash all dealers but our local Chevy/GM store is not a good place to take a car for maintenance...based on my experience. You can see the way this is done from the video. Only way to get the fluid level right is with the car in a level position, engine running in park, remove the threaded plug, etc. Difficult to do without a lift unless you trust your life with jack stands at all 4 corners.

      The previous owner did not believe in driving slow over bad roads, much less doing necessary repairs. Shop manual says 6qt. fill after pan replacement. It made a huge difference in shifting. Yes, no dip-stick is not the way to go as I will explain in an upcoming video.Chevy HHR 333740 miles and it still lives.

    I've considered having mine done even though the manual says it isn't necessary with regular use. I only hesitate because of how doing a change can cause issues later if you go too long on the current fluid without changing it. Mine currently has just over 98,000 miles on it. How many miles were on the fluid in your HHR?

    • @SteveAZ711
      @SteveAZ711  4 місяці тому +1

      Probably 300000. The original owner all but drove it into the ground. If you are looking for more information. I suggest calling a dealership and asking them how often they recommend a fluid change on a 2.4l or 2.2l engine.
      Thanks.

    • @SteveAZ711
      @SteveAZ711  5 років тому +2

      I changed mine at 333,740 miles, and as far as I know it had never been changed before. Chevy says that you never have to change it, if the car is used in normal driving. I guess one would have to decide what is normal. I know using it for towing or like a delivery van or taxi would not be normal. If it is not whining or hard shifting and seems to be fine...then I would not change it.

    • @SteveAZ711
      @SteveAZ711  5 років тому +2

      Low fluid level or a clogged oil filter could cause the HHR not to go into gear or go into gear very roughly. However, since the transmission is basically a sealed unit, it is very unlikely that low fluid or no fluid or clogged filter is the problem. I assume that all the fluid is still there. It also could be an electrical issue causing a shift solenoid malfunction. Have a qualified mechanic that knows something about these transmissions look at it. It may just be a loose or chewed wire(mice like wiring for some reason), some cars more than others.

      I know this is old but Its most likely the transmission oil feed lines. They crack easily causing the car to lose the foward drive. (Assuming you still have reverse)
      Lift car remove pan
      Remove trans filter
      Remove the 4 bolts holding the metal trans oil feed lines.
      Replace with a new ($120+) or refurbished one from junk yard ($7) (if its still good)
      Replace filter..
      Replace pan and gasket..
      Fill w 6 qrts

    Could you have added a plug hole so that you can service this transmission and change the fluid like every year or so?

    • @SteveAZ711
      @SteveAZ711  5 років тому +1

      Hi Mike! You know every time I pull a tranny pan I think of adding a drain plug just for the convenience of what you mentioned. It can be done, and I bet someone put a UA-cam video up with just that idea in mind. HHR transmissions generally do not require fluid changes, so the manual says about the HHR. The cars that do require fluid changes usually have very long intervals such as 50,000 miles 75,000 or 100,000 miles. My 92 Astro Van I believe is 10,000 miles.That said, I would still have to change the filter which requires removing the pan anyway. If one removes the pan like in this video, then it really is not a difficult repair. However, I still can't help thinking about that drain plug.

    • @SteveAZ711
      @SteveAZ711  5 років тому

      Oh it was easy to fill ok, but if I ever have to add due to a leak then the checking process really, really sucks. Mind you auto transmissions are not supposed to leak...but they do sometimes and with no dipstick then I am pretty much in the dark as how much to add without doing a shop manual checking procedure(soon to be explained.) NOthing was added to this tranny ever and it was over a quart low after 333740 miles. Luckily the trans fluid was not burnt. The suspension issues kept the owner from driving it... so it sat and leaked a bit more over time. ConnieAZ21's uncle refers to these small Chevys as "Throw away cars". Just use them up and throw them away. A different uncle bought one new and the other uncle made the comment. It was then that the beer drinking and arguing began LOL
