  • What's the deal with Studio Ghibli painting videos? I've been seeing a lot of how to paint like Ghibli, Ghibli scene paintings, Ghibli-styled paintings videos lately and I wanted to share my thoughts on why these types of videos have been trending.

    this was such an interesting, well-written video! When I first got onto art youtube the ghibli stuff was just starting to blow up and I wanted to try and create that "calm" "relaxing" ghibli video style, but then I realized that's just not me. My videos have to be chatty, rambly podcast like art videos because I just have too much to say. Overall, I'm glad I made the decision to embrace what I wanted to do, rather than follow the "trend." that being said, I love studio ghibli, the first movie I ever saw in theatres as a baby was spirited away (long story short I had nightmares about my parents turning into pigs for years) and I think porco rosso is my favourite! Anyways thanks for making this video it raises some great questions

    those summertime sounds with the cicadas chirping is one of the most nostalgic sounds tucked away in my brain.

      All i can think of is the MEMEME! Music video where he gets eaten by that weird naked lady. Traumatizing in a weird way, but also nostalgic.

    It kinda makes me sad that YTbers only focus on the more, like you said “slice of life” aesthetic scenes of Ghibli movies. Princess Mononoke is my favorite out of the bunch but it almost never gets it’s time in the sun. Now I wanna rebel and make studies of the “non-aesthetic” Ghibli scenes

      I understand that my favorite Ghibli movie is Grave of the Fireflies and It's pretty rare to see redraws or repaints of scenes from that movie. Which is ashame because there some really eye-catching scenes that would be great to see people recreate.

    • @morganhay3968
      @morganhay3968 3 роки тому +3

      Yeah, Princess Mononoke is one of my favourites but it usually gets left out or just mentioned in passing. I think maybe it's because it's the most 'anime' of Ghibli films (except Nausicaa maybe?) - it doesn't fit in with the preconception people have of the studio's work.

      @@NeonGamzee MilkCloud had a painting session on Grave of the Fireflies. But yeah I guess most UA-camr go for Spirited Away/Totoro.
      I plan to paint scenes from When Marnie Was There or Porco Rosso (or even Pom Poko) but then again I am not a UA-camr so not going to turn the tide on UA-cam anytime soon :-)

    Interesting observations about Ghibli as it gets filtered through people online! I never even realized this to be honest. When I think about my favorite visual things from Ghibli, I think the only one that coincides with what we see online is the train scene from Spirited Away. Everything else I love from Ghibli is like, the gritty old world realism from Princess Mononoke, the architecture of the abandoned theme park and bathhouse in Spirited Away, the alien-like forests and underground in Nausicaa, and all the heart wrenchingly dark scenes in The Tale of Princess Kaguya. My single favorite scene from any Ghibli film is the opening background frames of Princess Mononoke, with that foggy forest. Mononoke was my first Ghibli film, saw it in a theater when I was like 13, and that opening scene blew me away. I'd never seen anything like that!

    Ghibli scenes tend to use Poster Color which i hear is ground less than Gouache and Waoor, but Miyazaki himself uses watercolors in his sketching. Absolutely loved this analysis though, I had been thinking it myself but wasn't sure how to word it!

      According to Nicker their Poster Color paint is gouache.

    I remember flicking through an old graphic design book. it was made when digital graphic design wasn't common. They called gouache 'The Designer's Paint'. Gouache is so versatile I love it.

    I was actually thinking the same! I just started learning gouache this month and I was overwhelmed with the amount of Studio Ghibli gouache videos there are! I've only ever seen maybe like 2 or 3 of the films, but I understand the appeal and the aesthetic. Plus the colors and scenes are easily replicable, so great practice for beginners.
    Just beware to anyone searching gouache on youtube, you're going to be seeing ALOT of it lmao

    This is so true. I love the UA-cam vids but I wanted to see something a bit stronger like Miyazaki actually did. My favourite Ghibli film is Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind and I always wanted to draw her flying in the fires of war with the Ohmu behind her....maybe now is the time...

    This was such an interesting take on the Ghibli art youtube trend! I like to copy scenes from Ghibli movies as an approachable and enjoyable way to understand gouache! Oddly I find gouache harder to work with than watercolour. Also I haven't seen any Ponyo scenes video around :)
    The way you broke down the Ghibli foliage style was very helpful, I love seeing these breakdowns and you translating it into a quick sketch.

    True Ghibli art is my biggest love. My dad would buy us the movies, and we would watch one every night to fall asleep to. I would watch them over and over again. Ghibli movies to me are like Frozen/Moana movies are for kids nowadays.

    Wow I found this video, as I recently watched my first Ghibli movie in my life at 23 years old this month, I was never allowed to watch it due to the magic it had and my grandma yelling "brujas" (witch/witchcraft in Spanish) as a child because most of the movies had some form of "magic" in her eyes. So I did see the recent trend and went on a ghibli marathon (sry not sry grandma) this month to see why it was so aesthetically pleasing. And the way you describe it fits well to the ghibli scenes of "wonder and fascination", thank you for sharing your thoughts and your painting, I really enjoyed it~!

  • @grafcharming5030
    @grafcharming5030 3 роки тому

    I loved this video it was informative while having a clear form and style and I absolutely felt caught when you said “you probably clicked on this video because you saw Ghibli in the title” 😂
    I think culture value is an really interesting concept I one time was in the Tate Gallery in London (a lovely museum) and on accident walked past “water lilies by Monet” there was a lot more people compared to the other paintings and I found it fascinating because If there wasn’t a crowd I would probably have overlooked it. And it is a beautiful painting but still in this moment I think I felt what you are talking about here.
    But that’s also the charm of art I mean if we break it down all paintings are just paint or scribbles but the emotional value and what the evoke in use is what makes us drawn to art 🥰
    And art also becomes more valuable when there isn’t coming more and with Hayao Miyazaki having gone into rent at least this era of Ghibli is over and so the nostalgia and emotional value also increased 🤔
    I mean even the music 🎶 calms me down- Joe Hisaishi is just a genius 😊

    I thought Miyazaki uses watercolours for his sketches n storyboard, but for animation poster colours (not exactly gouache )

    thank you for putting into words what I've been trying to understand. I'm quite tired of seeing those in my recommended feed.. so much I almost stopped watching art UA-camrs (even though I make videos about art myself) to watch other types of content like sewing and woodworking, technology and weeb things. I'd love to make ghibli fanart for a video but I'm so tired of those that I just don't want to have to edit my own... maybe I should go full weeb on a fanart video instead.. idk xD

    Gouache is the medium of choice for background because gouache itself is cheap, easy to work with, dries quickly/matte, can be used in translucent or opaque ways, and photographs brilliantly. It's perfect for illustration and animation because of these properties.
