BBC Nine O'Clock News Announces Jill Dando's Death (BBC 1999)

- The BBC's Nine O'Clock News reports the death of BBC journalist and television presenter Jilly Dando in 1999. The presenter is Peter Sissons.
Back in 1999 as a 17 year old, 37 seemed quite old really.
I’m 37 now, its scary how quickly the years pass me by.
Tom 441 I was 19 in 1999 now 39 Tom. I know exactly what you mean. I remember 1999 like I am still there. Yet when I look at photos, videos etc it looks so old, yet to myself it wasn’t any different than 2019. True cars look different but houses, streets, shops are exactly the same. However 20 years before 1999 was 1979 and things didn’t look that different yet 20 years before 1979 was 1959 and things looked very very different. Cars, clothes, signs, shops. I would say from the late 1970s things started to have a modern look to them, from which we can relate to today.

Time management is like trying to grab hold of water, impossible.
The whole Jill Dano murder still shocks me now I can't imagine her terror at the moment of attack.
@@swaneknoctic9555 things have changed digitally in the last 20 years but you're right, styles haven't changed so much.
I was 19 in 1999. I'm now 43. It does indeed go fast. I was working the morning shift in a nursing home when this happened. Had just finished the shift and was in the staff room when some of the afternoon shift girls burst through the doors and said, "have you seen the news? Jill Dando's been murdered!"
Interesting how this was only 15 years ago, but the studio looks so much more professional and adult. I miss how everything seemed much more sophisticated from the 90s. Nothing was made to patronise people, and treat them like idiots, as it is currently.
Good point
The music too, was the Beeb at their best. The studio and graphics are still impressive today, though that (computer generated?) desk is humongous!
Dan Coulson Well actually much more than 15 years considering it was introduced in 1993! (I think)
0:25 look at how old the cars look
I also liked the clock counting to 9 o clock just before it begins.
R.I.P to both Peter Sissons and Jill Dando
What Peter Sissons says at the end really moved me all those years ago and it does today.
you can hear the emotion in his voice, he is fighting back tears. infact i think he is holding off throughout the whole thing, it must be hard to report on the death of a friend and colleague but bbc newsreaders are very professional
In his autobiography he mentioned that he and Jill fell out a few years previously. Apparently a reporter asked him about rumours he was to be replaced and he joked he should 'dye his hair blonde'. Jill apparently took it personally and stopped speaking to him and they never made amends, which he has regretted ever since.
Sam Walker Maybe he did it?
Real lump-in-your-throat moment... :(
@@MagicAyrtonforever I very much doubt it!
Jill would have been mortified and disgusted if she knew that the cops framed an innocent man
I think that you are right, Sid. I think that with her particpation in CrimeWatch and other investigations, she was going to crack open something major. Barry George, no disrespect to him, is clearly not the sharpest tool in the box. A clean, swift killing like that takes someone who more 'know how', like a professional. Same wrt Princess Di. The CCTV in the tunnel just happened to be out of order when the 'collision' took place in that tunnel. She was also murdered, no doubt. Even her leaked phone calls shows a very scared woman who knew that she could be bumped off
Robert Palmer
Princess Diana also spoke about being bumped off as well. Both knew far too much about 'people in high places'.

RIP Jill dando 20 years on great Britain still haven't forgotten you & will allways miss you very much
Absolutely, still and always will remembered ., and loved by so many. How professional she was.
I loved the intro music for the news back then... sounded so epic..
The original Nine O'Clock News music of this period was created in 1988. This version was created in 1993, using an orchestra to enhance the tone, and make it more majestic to coincide with their huge virtual news set. However within a month of this bulletin the virtual set would be no more, and the start of the corporate BBC branding of red/cream look would commence.
Loved it. Really got you in the mood for the headlines
RIP Peter Sissons
His kind words at the end of this bulletin were from the heart :-(
Definitely, he sounded genuinely devastated. RIP Peter and Jill, together reunited and reading the news in Heaven,
@RS U Definitely, miss her a lot. Jeremy Vine is my favourite now, very versatile and seems to be able to present anything, serious news to light hearted stuff. Like Jill really as she was great on the news and also presenting the Holiday programme.
That's scousers for you. Big 💕 hearts. Rip Peter Sissons.
Imagine how difficult it must be to have to report your friend and colleague's brutal death whilst struggling to retain your composure.
Anyone else hear a slight crack? A bit like when Martyn Lewis said that people "kept faith in Princess Diana. She was the People's Princess"
It's really sad that Barry George doesn't even remotely match the description of the alleged gunman, yet he was framed because the police needed results, he was the village idiot and fitted some kind of profile. I'm so glad he got acquitted in 2008.
Wow!
He was forced to take the blame and was paid off after he took the sentence.
Clarissa - No, of course B.George didn't fit the e-fit because he was just 'The innocent police Patsy' in this case.
More than likely this murder was 'ordered' when she got too close (for comfort) maybe to revealing extremely damning information that she had gathered during her own personal investigations into paedophilia among the high & mighty and rich & famous.
She also knew C.R/Harry Webb or'Kitty' who has always had his fair share of various suspicions and allegations about his 'personal life' following him around, especially since his name came up on that E.G.House List with the alleged paedophillia connections.
Also Alan Farthing's role in all this - he seems to have conveniently appeared on the scene at the right time, for her to both quickly 'fall in love' with and get engaged to - and who has disappeared off the radar/news.
Conspiracy Theorists might say their relationship was contrived to happen!?
R.I.P. Jill - I hope your family will still get the answers and peace of mind they deserve.
0:07 Jill Dando known and loved by millions has been brutally murdered
10:59 at the age of 37 is in head of tempo 128 BPM and people born between April and June 1989
What an absolute disgrace that no one has been brought to trial for the murder of this wonderful woman. Contract killing cover up??
Yes, no doubt about that whatsoever.
The Met police know who did it. So do others.
@@linzimarina1847 That's that solved then.
she was about to reveal info about Jimmy Savile i have heard.
Media pushed the Yugoslav theory but that never held water
Crimewatch is a more likely candidate & her bloke was also quite weird afterwards n didbt take him long to find a new lady
It's almost absurd to think she had a big enough enemy to end up murdered. She was so nice and innocuous
Peter Sissons you’ll be sadly missed
It is rather sad that both Princess Diana and Jill Dando would have been very very close friends. They both left the world died young in a much more poorer state in the void that we continued to live in today. May they meet each other again in heaven. Amen.
I remember watching this when it happened, I was eighteen or nineteen. Really shocking, she was about the last famous person you’d expect to be murdered.
My brother who would have been about twelve at the time, pointed to the neighbour who was being interviewed and shouted “He did it!” and my mum told him off for being disrespectful.
Great Britain still love you Jill Dando , 22 years later ❤️
It’s not great anymore
This was definitely a professional hit. He clearly used a silencer on his gun so no one could hear the gun shot.
From ballistic evidence the police know a silencer was not used. The murderer held the gun directly against Jill’s head which is why a gunshot was not heard by neighbours. He also left a spent cartridge at the scene which points away from a hired gunman. However, I do wonder about Jill possibly coming across evidence of something big during her work as a BBC journalist and this being covered up.
R.I.P Jill Dando. 🌹🌹🌹🌹
I love the moment Jill is surprised at the Ball in Vienna by Sir Cliff Richard.
Watching this now reminds me how much better tv news reporting was even 20 years ago.
Really was.
BBC had some true heavyweights back then.
Sissons, Burke, and Kate Adey. All elite.
How odd that her brother de-personalised the death of his sister. He spoke about the impact it will have on the audience who have watched her. Very odd...but then the whole thing stinks of a contract killing. Broad daylight, one clean shot to her head which killed her. And the man calmly walks off, no doubt into a waiting car. I would like to see this solved in my lifetime but I don't think it will be...dark powers behind it will see it's never exposed. Poor Jill.
ZS 15 Keep smoking.
So you’re saying her brother had something to do with it? I don’t get your point
4:12 "We're going to miss her obviously, dreadfully" - Maybe you missed this part.
@@twilhhe said it with a friendship tone, and impersonal
@@dorothykilgallenwasmurdere1653He would fit right into any episode of Eastenders, heartless lot.
You can hear the emotion in everyone. That was so sad and senseless. It struck me as odd at the time how she looked so much like Princess Diana and I still can't escape that thought. RIP both xx
@ElectricJohnny What has her lifestyle got to do with anything?
@Buffalo 66 I live in reality. She was shot in the head. A man whom was good at his job.
Clearly he was using a silencer.
@haiku spirit Thanks for the reply haiku.
@@swaneknoctic9555 The weapon was a Browning short. The bullets are somewhat smaller and produce less noise.
I found her brother's reaction really odd ...
Yes, I did too.
Just thought the same after watching this after he released a statement in 2023 declaring she ‘was in the wrong place at the wrong time’.
Weird
Rest in peace Peter Sissons.
This is still so unbelievable that she was murdered.
Mistaken identity possibly
R.I.P JILL DANDO
Very sad. She seemed like a lovely lady.
Peter Sissons' news reading career covered various wars, terrorist attacks etc but he would have probably cited this as the most difficult story he had to cover.
peter sissons looked like and sounded like he wanted to cry and so did that reporter at the end coz i am sure the whole of BBC did
Apart from the BBC paedophiles she was about to release a dossier on...The BBC had her killed to keep her mouth shut, she knew too much about organised paedophile rings within the company.
20th Anniversary 1999-2019
The subject matter is very unhappy, but this clip fills me with nostalgia.
There's not a single person in this video who is not well-spoken and well-mannered; this goes for the members of the public being interviewed as well as the journalists. They all have a level of respectability and professionalism that you don't see nearly as often these days.
Just because someone is well spoken doesn't make them respectable.
I miss the 90s.
News was reported very professionally back then!
Before the internet ruined everything!
The Internet destroyed everything. The 90’s were LEGIT.
Hard to believe this was so long ago, and that I'm now the same age she was when she was murdered too! Damn!
Still to this day 30th October 2022, Jill's killer was never identified/Caught. Very Tragic Rip Jill 🙏
May I add that I was at TVC a few weeks before she was murdered in studio N2’s gallery on the 6th floor one afternoon while she presented a Summary for BBC 2 at 15:00, she was next door to me, and now no longer with us. I still can’t believe or understand how this could have happened.
doesn't take a top police person to realise that this was a 'hit'
I've always believed it was someone close to her or at the BBC. I just pray one day they come to justice but know chances are slim, its been 24 years, that person or persons involved may not be alive. Incredibly sad
22 years ago now and still no answers. One day we will all find out. ♥
@@riklangham6739 Jill once worked at Sunshine Hospital radio. Some basis research has put Savile here at the same time, so its a possibility that she knew something. My theory is she thought she could be the one to expose him, due to her high status in the public domain and presenting crimewatch. It would have been great journalism. It could have been one of the officers she worked alongside who blue the whistle.
Just a theory.
Open to alternative suggestions.
Very, very sad and strange. Poor lady. I hope this is solved one day.
Wierd. Jill Dando randomly came up in a conversation i was having yesterday and and today this pops up in my recommended.
r.i.p both peter sissons and jill dando
Jill Dando had fantastic former colleagues who worked with her on national television in London for example Martyn Lewis, Anna Ford, John Humphrys and Nicholas Witchell plus many more familiar faces as well as being a presenter on the BBC television news bulletins she also did other national programmes for the BBC such as Crimewatch and the long-running UK television programme Holiday.
22 years ago today
26/4/1999 - 26/4/2021
RIP Jill x
When I saw this on the news for the first time that day I didn't know it had happened ...
I was far more shocked than when I first heard about Princess Dianas death ...
That was one ruthless b*****d who done that...
Rip Jill ...
Di and Jill died 28 months apart. Both loved by the public and both could have passed as sisters, as they looked similar, RIP🌄🌅🌅🌄RIP
Well we all know she was assassinated
20 years on still unsolved sad.
I can't believe it's been nearly 25 years!
Rest in peace Jill,
Admirable colleagues
In the states we had an anchor, Jody Huinstruit, that was kidnapped from her apartment in the early morning hours. She was late for work, and was called in to come. Her kidnapper waited for her, and there was evidence of her kidnapping; shoes, hair dryer and keys that led to her car. She was never found.
Rest in peace beautiful lady.
It was definitely a professional hit, so the motivation is most likely to either criminal retaliation or she had information that made her a threat so they needed to silence her.
Didn't Hamish Campbell investigate any information she might've had, or, revealing something? And ruled that out.
She looks a lot like Diana.
J L-S I was thinking the same.
Yes indeed.
Absolutely. I have always thought she reminded me of Diana.
Nothing like Diana Doors.
I always thought of her as the Princess Diana of the BBC Royal Family...
R.I.P. Peter
26th april 1999 i think
The day I was born.
circle of life
You were born on 26th April 1999?
She had a Diana quality and look about her, died way to young
Wonderful person and great inspiration to all women😢
Jill's Death Was A Tragic One
Wow. How perceptive and insightful.
She was so so lovely. Why oh why , would anybody do this. And after 20 years no one as ever been convicted . Im gutted that some bastard as got away with this.
I still fon't know how Peter Sissons or Kate Adie were able to report this story so clearly and objectively. This is one of their friends and coleagues. And they are expected to tell the world about the death of a friend.
Sissons, Adie and Burke. Three titans in their field.
She always reminded me of Princess Diana, funny how they were both bumped off and at the same age too because they knew too much about certain people...
Who did she know too much about?
I don’t know much about this case.
True however Diana died at 36 Jill at 37
Wasn't she about to reveal something
18 years ago today x
Barry didn't do it.
She was silenced by the establishment, we live in a fucked up world, this shit really does happen.
Spot on mate 💚💚
back in the time you know things were bad when kate adie was called in to report, now adays that uniqueness has vanished
so sad seemed a lovely person 😣
It's frustrating how convinced this report is that her murder was due to her celebrity status.
She was the journalist who knew too much. British Intelligence services decided she had to be silenced.
May Jill rest in peace
A brutal bastard whoever did it.
It’s weird how people sounded so posh not so long ago
last old-fashioned BBC
I was 3 when this happened
This is *M* when she was younger, brutally killed by Silva's helicopter 13 years later at Skyfall. 4:39
Who Did Kill Jill Dando?
April 26, 2021 it happened exactly 22 years ago today and we still no answers to why she was killed 🙁
She was killed because she unearthed a pedo ring that included some very high profile and powerful people. And a certain Royal who doesn't sweat!!!
wow 20 years ago
deffo a professional hit this she was about to expose the whole thing rip Jill dando
Absolutely. Everything about it said professional hit, but it could have been a lot of people because she was on Crimewatch.
20 Years
Why did they do it?
It is ostensible that the hit man used a firearm equipped with a silencer. It was professional and premeditated.
Definitely not a simpleton like Barry George.
Very possibly silenced by MI5
The weather went down today.
i grew up in Weston too
RIP Jill ❤
1999-2019 20 Years On.
I've just watched the documentary on BBC1 just now...I think she was on the brink of exposing something major maybe?
Yep. Saville's dirty secrets.
@@ChrissyboyH44 maybe
Just a really, really odd one. I know thats an understatement. But the whole thing just doesn't add up.
I initially thought crazy fan, link to criminals, then i thought it was so likely to be someone she knew...20 years on and no answers 😥
...Still Feelz Like yesterday !!!
Mi5 at their finest.
Where did that file go?
How scary that Jill was trying to put away the bad guys and their was no one to put them away.
I'm not blaming Scotland Yard as they was shut down by mi5 who was protecting smith and Savile and many more.
Scotland Yard said it themselves.
RIP Jill I will type your work in all over the internet on pages that are nothing to do with your case.
Andrew walks free.
Her murder was nothing to do with any paedophiles. Stop talking rubbish. Lies such as those only serve to try and protect the guilty. The same with the lies about Diana's death.
Still unsolved.
End April 1999
RIP to Jill Dando, sad she’s never got justice. But on a lighter side, her comments about her appearance were like a 90s Disney Chanel movie “(Apparently) Ugly unpopular girl let’s hair down and gets contact lenses and instantly becomes the most attractive girl in school” She was beautiful though
Unbelievably! Why! London has turned into a cesspit. Thank god I’m no longer there
It was sad and unusual when it happened. She did present Crimewatch, so perhaps there was a link to someone who was exposed on that. On the face of it, you would wonder why she would be a target for anyone. Seemed all so senseless.
Dando was targeted
0:11 She didn't die in hospital.
She was shot through the head and died instantly.
