I'm from McDowell. My dad was a coal miner but when my brothers graduated he made arrangements with a friend to move them to North Carolina to work in the fiber mills. Coal mines were few and far between 30 + years ago and my dad knew they would not have a future there. I wish someone could come in with the funds to build factories. The roads are very narrow but I always thought that import and exports depots could be built at different stations at the railroad to ship things in and out to the Bluefield area where the interstate is close. But like he said I'm no financial expert. People that were born and raised there would come back if there was work. It's home.
Dear Ben, There are single homes and apartments in the area available for rent. Last we checked, which was about a month ago, a one-bedroom efficiency apartment rents out for around 550 USD per month.
