Mcdowell county is the third poorest county in the US and the poorest in West Virginia. It has lots of problems. 31% live below the poverty line because mines closed down, the place has the worst opioid drug epidemic with the highest rate or overdoses in the US.
County's seat "Welsh" declined so badly that there's no stores opened in its downtown and its walmart closed down in 2016.
There are only 2 grocery stores in the whole county.
This is criminal. I'm from Flint and my heart is breaking for these people. Flint residents are still buying water. Please people if you have influence anywhere please ask them to donate water to these people. 😭😭😭
Anybody can get a drinking water filter that removes lead for just a few bucks. Not nearly as big of deal as you think it is.
Dont forget about PFAS in WV water!!! Specifically c8/PFOAs/teflon! To which Manchin funded and gave way to pollute our ground water with their toxins known as dangerous since the 50s and got covered up because of the sake of the D&J!!!but coming from someone here, this county NEVER is even remembered in any legislation. I was in the WVU marching band and us performing and playing for the county were one of the top things they felt would restore hope in the county. This county was squeezed into seats and aisles in their local high school football field while we, a band of 400 that was named The Pride of WV from our citizens, performed a 20 min show and they were literally WEEPING over the opportunity of us performing for them.

I live in Morgantown WV. West Virginia has a lot of problems but I love the scenery and the weather ( most of the time) I bet you do miss home.

I worked at xmv 43, and I'm going to tell you I've worked all over the state and I've never in my life met or worked with such hard working, nice, respectful, and ethical people anywhere else in my life as I did in McDowell county, there's a since of pride and I'm honored to Kno each and every one of em! Day one I was welcomed as family and I miss it!! I wish them all the best and if I knew for a second there was another job there that wasn't in a 28 inch hi coal mine I'd be there💪🏻💯

The people whose water started to smell like rotten eggs need a hydro-geologist. Call the EPA, the state Department of Natural Resources, the county health department. Or did they try to make their well deeper and drilled into a bad layer? That can happen too.
It sounds like sulphur. It's nasty smelling, but harmless. I've experienced it a few times before, it was temporary for me.
In TN we had spring water of the mountain into the house and it dried up.
West Virginia has one of the best natural fresh water resources in whole USA, keep that.... It's not the mines... look for sheep dumping ground for multinationals.

New Richmond wv Wyoming county wv has horrible unsafe water going into houses. My family their packs in water from elsewhere. Jim justice needs to Spend some money for these communities.

HEY buy some water filters, YOU CAN drink your rain water, if you don't have lead paint or asphalt on your roof.
We live on catchment water. Get a 10K gal tank and some better gutters. Home Depot sells the plastic gutters pretty cheap. 12v water pump on amazon less than $100.
I haven't bought water in decades. The idea of buying water is as nuts as buying air or heat. Why? it's free.
Now coal air rainwater in WV is another story, I'd triple up on the filters, maybe a UV set up.

No. First of all "you" that you refer to is not most West Virginians, who voted mostly for Democrats untill recently. Both parties don't really give a crap, but this situation is due very much to the states' violent and oppressive economic/political history and present economy and natural environment. Secund they vote against their interest about like Detroit or Flint too, actually less so. Just like throughout the US and world. Nothing special about West Virginia in that regard, -you smug, presumptuous bigot!
You apparently don't know much about West Virginia other then bigoted stereotypes. Neither party has ever done much for the state and it's not like people there havi tried. The state has always been depressed and the people there in large part disenfranchised. West Virginia has an especially bloody labor history with extreme supression and violence including murder used against striking workers and organizers. People are trying to hold on to the well paying jobs they still have.
The state is also not a monolith. West Virginia is now majority GOP but there are still plenty of Dems. People have different views there as well as different interests just like anywhere else. You cannot blame this horrendous water situation which only effects a small part of the state on it's victims anymore then you can with the people of Flint, Mich. The point is they need outside help to correct this situation. Let's hope they get it soon!

@@davidmccain7662 the Dems favor more taxes on wealthy then Rep. do, yes, and more governent aid, relitively speaking, but are also frequently smug and decietful and do plenty to deliberately keep or push people down. Democrats were once good on supporting Unions but no longer are. They are more likely to support a higher minimum but it doesn't necessarily compensate for other areas. They are more likely to favor policy that increases the cost of living and makes owning a small business or one's own home less likely and loosing it more likely in perticular. The Republican party however is also clearly rotten to the core with coruption, corporate welfare, lies and deciete of its own etc. I won't go into the social differences between the parties as that's a whole different can of worms.

Issues with poverty in West Virginia and Appalachia more broadly pre-date Biden’s existence let alone his political career. Water has been an issue in McDowell county for years, I remember reading about it as a freshman in high school (am in college now)
