or else use bags of paver base and tamp it, that way you when the ground moves later on you won't have unlevel spots and there won't be so much flex happening
I would recommend anchoring the pergola. I am a retired structural engineer who lived in the Lower Mainland, British Columbia, which is close to the NW. We did get strong Northerlies now and then. Just anchor the three columns into the retaining wall, and give the bolt a horizontal slip joint, not too tight, allowing for differential settlement between the deck and retaining wall. People would always complain when I requested anchorage, and I would tell them that structures are not designed for nice sunny days.) Cheers from Canada.
Love the vieos, long time watcher. If there's one phrase from you that me and my gf have taken to heart, it's "doing your due diligence at the start will pay huge dividends in the future." I use that phrase all the time now.
Interesting. Never thought about that one. that would definitely stiffen it up but I feels very stable as is just FYI. Thanks o much for watching and the tip.
As others have said, this is a gimmick that wont last. There's a similar system that was sold in the uk but it was a nightmare with problems and no one sells it any more. It was designed initially for shed bases but was useless as decking support because it is like a trampoline in direct sun/hot weather and the boards expand and pop out the sub frames. The composite boards warp and pool water, then water gets trapped in the frames and because it doesn't dry out like wood, this provides the ideal conditions for algae to skin over and spread like crazy.
25 year warranty and you think it won't work? Seems like a lot for a product not expected to last... Even if it's similar, doesn't mean it's the same...
Time for you to catch up with the improvements that have been made with these things..I installed some for a walkway and inside of a gazebo I put together in 2019... with proper upkeep it's been doing fine.
Hi there, you've convinced us to give this system a try! We have a very long rectangle of dead space in our yard so we're wondering if staggering the planks would be better in our case - to make it more like one solid piece. Do you think this is a good or bad idea given what your experience?
Although it looks slightly wobbly floor, I may add around pool area if it can withstand chlorine. Since it doesn’t use fasteners, would actually be great for that purpose. Unfortunately that product is not sold in my immediate area which is surprising living in NY. Oh well, maybe the next thing you come across can be used around pool area.
If you had not bolted it down, how did it survive the winds from the bomb cyclone? Nice deck system by the way. I'm looking for ideas to put a deck over a concrete patio along with some type of cover.
I would automatically fill all that up with sand. That way it could have more of a solid base me thinking instead of a hollow space in between the same way you filled up the end.
Can you use another companies composite deck boards, such as Trex, as long as they are 5.5" wide with grooves on the sides? I can't get the Barrette deck boards where I live, just the instadeck base.
How did it hold? I am surprised it doesn't need to be anchored to the ground. I understood it is attached to your deck boards which are only snapped to the grid below.
I really like the tile supporter. I want to use it to build my Trex deck on my concrete floor. But I cannot find anywhere in N. California I can buy it.
Can I use the same ground levelling technique and install pavers instead? Or is the compaction of the soil not enough? Maybe add a bit of gravel. New at this sorry for the questions
It’s a very cool concept but I don’t like how much flex there is in the deck system. I also question the lifetime of the plastic used in the base. The elements tend to make some plastics very brittle and weak. If you could do an update I few years down the line and let us know how it’s going that would be great.
I understand completely Steven but the decking really does feel sturdy. Only time will tell with how this project will hold up but if anything fails I assure you I will let my audience know. Thanks so much for watching and your support of the channel.
Did you fasten the pergola to the decking? Looks like it's just sitting on there, and potentially can move when strong winds comes through since it is so light.
Been in the construction trade for 20 years Evan and one of the best things about my job is that I'm always taking on new and different endeavors because I never want to give my audience the same exact project twice. I take on many large projects every year and will continue to do so as long as I feel it is a benefit to my audience because that's the most important thing to me. Also, note that I have a 2 year old and a 5 month old right now and being able to take on smaller and simpler projects like this is a welcome relief since I can still get out weekly or bi-weekly videos on UA-cam but also be there for my family. Thanks for watching in any case.
Sorry Evan, but he is great. He takes the time to share. He doesn't have too. Just as you don't have to comment. Unless you have nothing to say positive or constructive then why add? Does it make you feel better? I just don't get this day and age, trump bolloxs stuff, that abuse is great!! How did we set the bar so low. Civility, respect and patience just seem to be actions that don't happen as much now. Take a breath, think, and ask yourself what value will my comment add? Otherwise have a nice day. and my apologies for hijacking a thread, i just get annoyed with keyboard comments that attack and criticise when people are only trying to help.
I like this idea for a semi-temporary deck, but I would definitely want to put down a base of compacted crushed rock underneath. Presumably that would remove most of the bounce. A little bounce I could live with since it’s all clipped together. I personally wouldn’t put any structures on top of it, even that relatively light weight pergola. It’s fun to see the different things available out there even if I might not use them myself. As you say, time will tell if the deck system holds up or not.
Nice job Brent. I think I would be interested is this product to cover my nasty concrete patio in the back yard. It looks simple to install. How high is it from the base to the top of the deck? I live near Los Angeles so the summers get hot so I wonder how hot the deck gets. Thanks for your input and thoughts. I always like watching your new videos.
Don't do that, just tapcon some pressure treated lumber to the concrete and then build your deck ontop of that, simpler, sturdier, cheaper, better and reputable.
quick question Brett.. how do you get it level? the black bases have no adjustments and no places for spacers. sorry if it is a newbie/stupid question.
In the video I showed that I used a 2x4 to help Even out the soil but I also had a 6' level with me so I could account for the levelness when evening out everything. Doesn't have to be perfectly level. Just close and have an even grade is much more important.
@@BYOTools Cheers Brett for taking the time to reply. It is greatly appreciated and noted! I understood the levelling when you using this system on soil. But when on cement or tiles this is not possible with this system. Unless of course you relevel (slope etc) all. Which as you know is not cost effective especially when the slope is there for rain water etc. Basically my point is that i don't understand all these companies that produce systems such as these that don't include a basic adjustment system in the base plates or joints. Maybe my logic and rationale is too basic but i built my first deck in 2001, knowing nothing, for a bar i owned, so a huge amount of foot traffic and weight. It was on top of old roman stones in a street, turned pedestrian, so nothing could be fixed to the stones. It was 5m by 4m. It lasted 15 years with zero adjustments. As i was building it, all i was thinking that someone soon will design and patent base plates with adjustments to avoid all of the extra pieces of wood, screws, time etc The next deck i built, 10 years later, i discovered various models that tried to do it, but not with the quality. I am amazed that 2023 there is not a simlple, reenforced plastic base plate system for such a common product. Or maybe there is and I haven't seen it yet. This is cool but i can definitely see some flexing going on. I think this would benefit greatly from laying down a bed of crushed rock or paver base and using a tamper to make sure the earth doesn't settle and cause unlevel spots later on.
It might look a little bouncy up close on the camera but when you are walking on it, because the entire system interlocks with each other it really does feel solid. Thanks so much for watching.
Its bouncy because he needed to add a little layer of gravel to stabilize the ground...but as it clicks together it just make one big mat. It came out nice. I personally dont like that some critters make home under the board but that goes with anything in the yard right??😄

I don't live in hurricane country, either, but we do get strong winds. An 85 mph took my 10x10 shed down the back alley one day. Since the roof and one side panel are not solid and air can flow through, I doubt there's enough solid mass for the wind to pick it up or bliw it over.
I also live in the PNW and we do get wind storms with significant gusts from time to time. I’ve seen more substantial structures than this pergola get airborne so I would definitely anchor it. Would hate for such an attractive amenity to get trashed.

Stagger the seam
Great patio. Pergola not so much.
How will you mow your lawn without destroying the decking? Just wondering because I would not have put the deck flush with the ground for this reason. Also, why didn't you stagger the decking boards?
I thought about that, too. A single layer of brick or a thin gravel layer around it would keep the mower and edger away.
Ground preparation is a huge work. This does not save labor than using posts.
Being made of plastic, it will not rot, but I don’t know how long lasting will be.
