not to be cold, but i found it very satisfying how Evie and Meg were immediately dealt with this season--no dragging it out, just them getting their comeuppance. Very awesome.

Great review Chris, love your take on the show, your reviews on The Leftovers is what drew me to the channel in the first place, looking forward to the rest of the season :) I think this show is gonna really tie everything together nicely, in particular with the Australia storyline with all the 'subtle' references to it last season (Man in the Tower, Man on the Bridge/David Burton, Kevin's Dad, various news and paper headlines in the background). It just makes sense for the show to go in this direction :P
How apt that this episode was shown on Easter Sunday... I'm dabbling with the possibility of Kevin being the second coming of Christ. I don't think he specifically is, per-se, but I welcome the parallels. So far he has risen from the dead, made the journey to Bethlehem (Miracle), had a child without the physical act of conception (Lily) which could make Nora the "virgin" Mary? Either way I think she's clearly playing a big role this season, evidenced by the ending and the finale episode title "The Book of Nora". Or maybe Nora is actually Azreal, as was jokingly referenced last season too... maybe I'm reaching. But, back to Kevin, he shares a lot with the story of Christ, except of course he has not yet been sacrificed.
When Kevin suffocates himself I'm not convinced he actually dies. Merely, just tries to recapture that feeling. I think there's a part to him that's quite hesitant to actually die again. I recall Justin Theroux saying in an interview that since S2, his character has almost become addicted to that very _feeling_ of almost dying.
I love your take on how the opening relates to the modern story, I'm not sure if you knew but the opening sequence was actually based on a real event called "The Great Disappointment", where it was proclaimed that Jesus Christ would return to the Earth in 1844, and while the baptist and many others prepared, October 22 came and they were left disappointed. And, if you want to take it further, I suppose you could say that maybe him not literally being the second-coming of Christ, like Matt seems to think, will be a "great disappointment" to both him and his 'followers'.
Lastly, I wanted to bring something up that I saw the other day that I found super interesting. Intentional or not, The Leftovers seems to share many qualities and themes to Dante's Divine Comedy, which is broken up into three parts: Inferno, Purgatorio, Paradiso... this is totally how the show is structured with its three seasons. Season 1 had a big recurring theme of fire and flames, from Matt's flashbacks to the GR camp in the finale. In Jarden, everyone is essentially reliving the same day over and over again -- the women in the wedding dress, the man with the goat. That's purgatory. And then Kevin literally goes there (or at least The Leftovers' version of it). If S3 follows suit it will be about paradise:
    - INFERNO (Season One):
"The poem begins on the night before Good Friday" The series begins right before the Great Departure. Kevin is Dante, he's ~35yo and described as "lost". Dante's Woods are Kevin's Family. Both are assailed by beasts: Dante - lion, leopard, wolf; Kevin - deer, dog, The GR. They're unable to find the "right way", and they're conscious that they're ruining themselves and falling into a low place. The season literally ends in flames.
    - PURGATORIO (Season Two)
There is mention that this chapter ackowledges a spherical earth, which redirects to AXIS MUNDI. Holy shit. Axis Mundi: "At this point travel and correspondence is made between higher and lower realms"... Boom, International Assassin. Anyway... In Purgatorio, "The classification of sin here is more psychological than that of the Inferno, being based on motives, rather than actions." Motives. Big theme for S2. Love is the big theme of Purgatorio. God's love is pure, becomes sinful through humans, by either loving too strongly (lust, greed, gluttony) or too weakly (sloth) or towards improper or malicious ends (wrath, envy, pride). Love is a big theme in S2, even the misuse of love. Dante explained Purgatorio as "the conversion of the soul from the sorrow and misery of sin to the state of grace." The Hotel is where Kevin cleansed himself, literally with a jump in the pool, figuratively with the well.
    - PARADISO (Season Three???)
It's all speculation from here, but it fits the bill. "Beatrice guides Dante through the nine celestial spheres of Heaven" - Could this be Lindsay Duncan's role? "The first seven spheres of Heaven deal solely with the cardinal virtues of Prudence, Fortitude, Justice and Temperance" - The first seven episodes were released to critics? There's a lot to speculate with here
This show is glorious, can't wait to see how Damon decides to end it

Ho. Ly. Crap! That was unbelievable, Jorgino! Thank you _so_ much for those brilliant thoughts! With your permission, and _of course_ a promise to credit you, I may work your _Dante's Divine Comedy_ breakdown into a review, one of these weeks!

Of course of course, please go ahead :) Although Id hate to take all the credit, I saw the theory from reddit users "Guilty_Remnant" and "TimeCadet", so they deserve credit too, I just wanted to bring it to your attention :P I agree though, it blew my mind when I was looking into it, I definitely think Damon had taken some inspiration from it. If you look it up I'm sure you can also spot a few other connections I haven't seen either.

Chris I spend a lot of time watching reviews and recaps, I'm a big fan of the Collider team. Your intensely analytical breakdowns are some of the most thought provoking, interesting, and intelligent commentaries I have seen. I apologize for asking a slightly personal question but I'm very curious to know what kind of education you have because wherever it is from deserves a pat on the back, I stumbled across your channel to help refresh seasons 1 and 2 and I'm quite impressed. Keep up the great work.

      @ChrisHartwell  7 років тому +1

Well thank you, David! It's been a genuine pleasure collaborating with Collider; they've certainly encouraged me to up my game.
As far as education goes, I received my Bachelor's Degree at Biola University here in California. With that said though, I'm primarily self-taught when it comes to film criticism and analysis. Watch, watch, and rewatch. I've also dedicated way too many hours to reading about and hearing from filmmakers, which has helped me to better understand their approaches to filmmaking and their specific artistic voices.
Glad you're enjoying the content! Cheers!

A very important part about the Christian teachings of ALWAYS being ready for Christ's return and end-time events is this: the Spirit realm is TIMELESS.
The moment any person dies, he/she enters the Spirit Realm. He goes straight to Judgement Day sometime in the future. We don't know the date or time each of us will die. This is why the Kingdom of Heaven is near .... because we could die at any moment.
    Now with the Leftovers .....
Lindelof was a writer/producer of Lost, and the fantastic series finale where we saw an example of a TIMELESS afterlife where central characters were being gathered together in a world that they thought were real.
Fast Forward to the season 3 premier of the Leftovers.
We see central characters in a in a post Season 2 Jarden that we believe is real. This Jarden was completely whack! and had to have been the afterlife.
Kevin is moving between the real Jarden and an Afterlife Jarden, to probably find out something that will happen within the next 14 days. Just like the Afterlife Hotel last season, Kevin may have forgotten ie drank the water why he is there which would require either himself or some other in the real world sending messages to him in the afterlife to remind him the clock is ticking .... in the real world.
Meg & Evie were probably killed in the Afterlife Jarden as the missile strike was a GROSS over-reaction to the GR storming the town. These two may still be alive in the real Jarden because Afterlife Jarden is timeless. TIMELESSNESS was important in Lost and is in The Leftovers.
The final scene with old Nora could either be her in the real world meaning she truly did forget about Kevin .... or .... Nora has gotten LOST in the Afterlife world and has lost her memory for why she was there in the first place.
Either way, Nora & Kevin, and Jarden are very very important. And timelessness. lol.
