It definitely is the best Alien movie in years. I'd rate it 3rd best after Alien and Aliens. Still not as good as it could have been and it gets a bit daft near the end but I really enjoyed it.
Completely agree! I’d personally put it 4th, next to Prometheus… but the pair are very close together for me. Maybe a rewatch of Romulus will put it higher 🤔
@@davidthomas9190Luckily I’ll be rewatching it within the next week. Afterwards, I’ll probably make a video ranking the franchise from worst to best. Oh no! That’s where our stances have to differ haha. I absolutely hate Covenant with a passion, but I do understand why it has appeal with a lot of Alien fans. Unfortunately, I was just really wrapped up by Prometheus’s existential investigations and themes.. and was very sad to see Covenant drop them. It’s completely personal :P
Alien: Romulus is just....ok. Beautiful sets, great cinematography and Andy was a wonderful character. I just didn't remember anyone else. Alien and Aliens and even Alien 3, I knew every character by the end of the movie. This movie, well, fails terribly at building characters. I could appreciate times in the movie where it tried to do new things, but as you said at the beginning of your review, it relies too heavily on movies of the past. Especially the dialog. I really thought that the trailers had fooled me and it was going to take place on one of the colonies (the story of LV426 anyone????), but I was sorely disappointed when it took the same, small, cramped space of a derelict outpost. That reminds me. Plotholes galore. The storyline just didn't make much sense. Some young colonizers are the first to find this outpost? Weyland Yutani has no idea it's floating over one of their own colonies? The ending was just, silly imho. The creature looks like an engineer slenderman. It was cringe. It didn't invoke fear. It felt like a cheaply made homage to all of the films spliced together. Not to mention it really doesn't add to the canon of other films.
I figured that messages take a long time to travel in the Alien franchise. In the deleted scene from Aliens one of the employees gripes that messages take 2 weeks to travel back to corporate yadayada.
@@zzzxxc1 Yes, I realize that. I too think messages take time to travel in the Alien movies. However, Weyland Yutani had a presence on Jackson Star, which was the colony they were trying to escape. There had to be some sort of upper management, especially since they were demanding that the colonizers extend their work duties for another 5-6 years. It just didn't make much sense that some kids found it before WY did.
I understand this 100%. I guess it doesn’t make sense that a band of teens discover a very important Weyland research station before Weyland themselves… But then again, maybe Weyland did discover it and left it to drift for a reason? You know how they love to cover things up. They couldn’t risk more of their high-value lackeys dying at the hands of the Alien and couldn’t dispatch low-priority workers who might leak their experiments… so they just left it? That at least makes sense to me. I get if you’d still see it as a plothole. I also completely get not liking the Offspring creature. I was slightly mixed on it, as I said, but overall liked the ambition of it. I didn’t find it scary but I do always love seeing something new in these films. I wish they’d go a bit smaller with this next time though - like the worm-like creatures envisioned for the scrapped Neil Blomkamp Alien 5. I personally really liked the characters, especially Tyler, Bjorn, Rain and Andy. But I get them not being to your taste. Some are more bland and shallow than others, like I said in the video. But yeah, I loved the dynamic of the main 4 personally. Especially since they all sorta revolve around Andy - who undeniably was the best character here. Shame you just found it okay though. Fede Alvarez himself said he’d rather people hate the film than find it okay 😂 Hope the next Alien project manages to wow you!
@@MrGreaves Well, Rook (who was later transferred to Andy by module) had a prime directive, that directive was to salvage the formula Prometheus 5, so it wouldn't make much sense for them to abandon that directive. I really think it's a plot hole the writers missed or didn't care to patch up. They could of at least had a Weyland Yutani presence in the latter half of the film trying to retrieve it before one of the teenagers took off with it. My problem with the characters were, most of them were just fodder for the Aliens. Aside from Rain and Andy. I did like Rain, I thought her intelligence and thinking outside the box to reveal more lore about our favorite Aliens was neat. It's just, when I compare it to Alien or Aliens, I can tell you every character in both of those films, they are all very unique and bring unique character traits with them that are memorable despite being fodder as well. When you sit back and think about Romulus, is your favorite character really going to be one of the supporting characters? Doubtful. Whereas a film like Aliens, everyone has their favorite Marine (I love Vasquez and Drake's relationship) and who can forget Bill Paxton's unforgettable Pvt Hudson? I just want to say though, great video! Even if I didn't quite think it was the best film in years (I liked Covenant a lot). Still appreciated your take on the film. I liked and subscribed =D
@MrGreaves If you disagree, you failed to look critically. Between ridiculous timelines (less than 10 minutes for two separate gestations) and much much more, this film was one of the weakest entries in the series by far. It belongs in the same landfill as AvP2.

@MrGreaves I need to rematch Romulus ASAP.
I did like Prometheus but actually really liked Covenant 😁

@MrGreaves if we all liked the same stuff the world would be boring brother 👊🏻
very true! I wish more people shared this mindset ✌️

I agree with all your sentiments entirely. The 3rd act was enough to ruin the entire movie for me. Just devolves into derivative shlock.

Ah awesome! I hope you enjoy mate :D

It was terrible. Good spectacle, two decent characters, the rest was trash. Admit it to yourself.
Um… 😂 that’s your opinion?
