  • The Elephant Gambit (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 d5?!) is a very aggressive opening for Black, but White can refute it in different ways.
0:16 - Ideas of Elephant Gambit
    1:19 - White’s 2nd best choice 3.exd5
    2:15 - 3.exd5 e4
    8:50 - 3.exd5 Bd6! (Black’s tricky move)
    10:56 - White’s main refutation - 3.Nxe5!
    11:15 - 3.Nxe5 dxe4
    16:45 - 3.Nxe5 Bd6 (Black’s main option)
26:26 - Why 3.Ne5 is the best practical move?
28:36 - Should you play Elephant Gambit or not?
29:37 - Refuting Other Dubious Gambits & Conclusion
Before creating this video, we read all the books, articles, and videos that have been published about the Elephant Gambit. Then we combined this with our own engine analysis to discover a strong variation that gives White a decisive advantage.
While the move 3.exd5 is a popular refutation, we found that the move 3.Ne5 is more practical, easier to play, and easier to remember.
With 3.Ne5, White takes the central e5 pawn, advancing the position of the knight. As you’ll see, this leads to huge pressure on the f7 pawn which becomes a major weakness for Black.
Subsequently, the outcome of many of these variations is that White ends up with the Bishop pair and some very easy-to-play positions.
Move-by-move, and step-by-step, this video will show you how to refute this dubious gambit!

This is going to be a lot of fun :-) Thanks for that. I will start with it when I finished my Anti-Sicilian preparation. I couple of days ago, I faced this gambit in a 5+3 game and intuitively played the line suggest line. I guess this is to be credited to the Philidor course I had just finished. Unfortunately, I missed 9. Nc3! ("The killer move") and played 9. Bd5 and problems to coordinate/activate my pieces.

Great stuff but the author talks too fast. I realize you can rewind but it is very hard to keep up with the video and I watch 100’s of videos. New or inexperienced players would have massive problems with this video.

Hi Lawrence, I would suggest reading the article first (and use a physical board). And then go to the video as a kind of repetition. After that, you will probably refute the gambit easily in your games.

If you slow it down to half speed that makes this video an hour long.
